88 The Village of Salem

~In 1883, Owen Farrelly purchased the lot of the old Dorr Hotel orTavern74 and hired W.J. Cruikshank to supervise the construction of a newbuilding. Mr. Farrelly moved his grocery store from the Gibson Block and conducted business on the corner across from the depot. In June of that year, JohnShaw moved his meat market into the southern ~nd of the new building.75During the late 1890s and early 1900s, Farrelly's Hotel occupied Shaw's oldstand (Ill. 34, p. 87).

The D & H depot (1889 Map No. 10), built in the 1850s, was renovatedin 1878. Prior to this time, there were two rooms for passengers: a gentleman'sroom and a ladies room. The gentleman's room was converted. into an office, and the ladies room became the general passenger room.76

A large three-story building, across the railroad tracks from the depot, was known as the Whitlock Building during the post Civil'War years. Arthur,.Whitlock, a very reputable carpenter, may have built 01' remodeled the building A'

when he left the Salem Steam Mills. According to Mr. Shields, Mr.' Whitlock "~

ran a store on the first floor. Other occupants of the first floor were Mrs .. :~'Kerslake's millinery shop (1882), a meat market (1891), and a saddler (189.8)':j'Ji

When Slocum W. Lake owned the building in 1904, two apartments occuPled.;,~the first floor. Dr., Willard Cotton ha~ ~n office on the ~econd flo,or facin~ the ~depot. He came to Salem after the CIvIl War and practiced dentistry untIl ~e ;~

Dear Mr. Wilson:

Because your 1November 1993 query was a genealogy one requiring longerresearch than checking out a vital record, I had to do the search after hours. However, Ihave no set fee for such research. If you think the information is of value and want tocompensate me for my time, send whatever you think is appropriate. I should have toldyou about this in my first letter. Otherwise don't worry about it.

Here's what I found. Buried in the Hebron Cemetery:

M. Williams props. of Salem Steam Mills; grist, saw, and planing mills, sash and blindfactory and lumber yard. I could not find Arthur in any cemetery records. Orange, Texasis probably right since Arthur seems to disappear from the local scene. John M. Williamsin 1899 tore down the mill and put up a large shirt manufacturing building. He had nopartners.

Arthur, William, and John, according to our Civil War records, did serve in Co. E,123rd Regiment. Arthur was discharged on June 23, 1865 after being wounded; Williamwas discharged on June 28, 1865; John Patrick died of measles on June 21, 1865 inSavanna, Georgia. All enlisted from Hebron, N.Y., the neighboring town.

Much history about Salem exists in local and county history books and in ourBancroft Library and in my files-- there is too much to copy. A visit from you is probablythe best way to continue your research. The librarian and I would be happy to set you onthe right track if you come.

I hope this helps you in putting together your family tree. Good luck.
