From the Manager’s Office Thank you to all who have supported me during my last six years on the Board. During this time there have been many improvements to our Lazy River community.

Revitalization, along with the excellent cooperation and workmanship by all Board members brought about the following:

1. Much needed improvements to our amenities.

2. A new marina.

3. Full-fledged gated community, both main gate and storage yard.

Greetings! By the time this article goes to print we will have a new Board of Directors and will also know which ballot issues passed or perhaps didn’t pass.

I would like to say Thank You to each and every one of you that did your part and cast your ballot this year! Each ballot is counted at least twice for accu-racy by both volunteers and staff members. The proxy ballot forms are needed so that we can con-firm we have a quorum and the meeting can be held. Can you imagine all of this hard work everyone goes through and then not be able to have the An-nual Meeting because a quorum was not present!? It has been known to happen at some communities!

So, that being said, Thank you for doing your part!! Let’s take a moment to talk about rock mail vs. email for rock mail; if you have a red dot painted at the end of your driveway in the road that means that a member of your household signed up to receive rock mail via email. All of your rock mail will be emailed to you in this case. If you do not have a red dot then you will receive your rock mail on your doorstep, under your frog, bunny, seashell or some other form of paper weight! When you need to have copies made for rock mail, it is not necessary for you to go around the community and count all of the red dots; we have a list in the office and know exactly how many copies need to be made for distribution. Simply tell us you’d like a complete rock mail set of cop-ies, we will do the rest! At the time the copies are printed they will be emailed to those owners who signed up to receive rock mail via email, unfortu-nately we can’t hold on to copies and email at a later date for you. Rock mail is emailed on the day it is printed. Copies are made every Wednes-day. You may drop them off any day of the week, but the copies will be made on Wednes-days. As the office closes on Wednesdays at noon you may pick up your rock mail copies in the office Board room, we leave them there after we leave the office. You can gain access to the Board room through the Welcome Center using your common area key at any time. Please re-frain from asking for any copies on Mondays, this is the busiest day of the week, we are happy to copy any other day of the week for you.

This last year we have had a few vacancies on various committees within Lazy River Village that are of great importance to the community, all of those vacancies have officially been filled! Thank you so much to those of you who have stepped up and taken the lead on some of these commit-tees! As always, Thank You to every one of you that volunteers in large and small ways here in Lazy River Village!

Committed to Excellence,

Justine Mackie, CAM Community Association Manager For the Lazy River Village Board of Directors

30 minute Minestrone (Think I may like this one)

4 Cups water

2 cups Miniature peeled carrots

15 oz. can of Great Northern Beans

14 oz. can peeled Italian Plum tomatoes, cut up

1 Cup chopped onions

4 teaspoons beef bouillon granule

2 teaspoons low sodium beef bouillon

1 teaspoon bottled minced garlic

½ teaspoon dried basil crushed

½ teaspoon dried oregano crushed

¼ teaspoon black pepper

9 oz. package frozen ‘no salt added’ Italian green beans

1 small zucchini sliced or cut in small pieces.

½ cup elbow macaroni or broken spaghetti uncooked

¼ cup grated or shredded parmesan cheese In large saucepan combine first 10 ingredients.

Bring to boil over high heat.

Add green beans, zucchini and pasta.

Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 10 minutes or until pasta is cooked. Spoon into bowls and sprinkle each serving with parmesan cheese.

Makes 6 servings or 1 and 2/3 cup per serving

Baked Mac and Cheese Cheese Sauce

½ Cup Butter 1/3 cup Flour 2 Tablespoons dry Mustard 5 Cups Milk

Put in large pan a heat together on Low heat.

After warm mix in:

½ block of Marbled Cheddar 1 can Cheddar Cheese Soup 8 oz. sour cream 8 oz. cream cheese ¼ Block of Velveeta Cheese

Butter your pan before you start putting it all together.

Cook your Macaroni and start putting in layer at a time starting with Macaroni.

Bake at 375* for 45 minutes.

Use Coffee filter for: To wipe down windows, mirrors and eyeglasses. They will not leave lint.

Keep veggies crisp by lining your container with fil-ters, will help absorb moisture. Keeping pots and pans clean is important but keep-ing them in good condition is to place a filter in the ones that you don’t want scratched up.

Baked Potato Hint To hurry up baked potatoes, place in boiling water for 10 minutes then bake in very hot oven.

Or cut in half and bake face down on a baking sheet.

I would grease the sheet.

(I have used some of the recipes, some I have not used. These are have nots.)

If we all pitch in, no one will need to do security patrol very often. Should you have any questions or sugges-tions please contact us. Dick and I will be sure you are trained before you go out alone. We will start the scheduling for February very soon. Thanks to all of you for making this transitions for us as easy as possible.

Men’s 18-Hole Golf League Our annual skins game featured wins by Ron Beaudoin and Rick Whiters with

eagles on holes #2 and #3 respec-tively. Ralph Clay won two skins with birdies on #10 and #11 and continues his stellar play. Solo skins with birdies were also won by Gary Clark on #7, Fred Charest on #12 and your humble scribe, on #16.

The league then made way for Christmas and New Year.

When play resumed on January 8, the weather turned nasty with high winds and cold temperatures. But, to the credit of the league members, no one can-celled because of the elements. Plans are in the

works to hold a scramble format and perhaps a set of Can-Am matches before playoffs start in mid-February.

The league once again will be sponsoring the annual Super Bowl Party in the club house. At this writing, the Patriots, Packers, Seahawks and Colts are still in the hunt. Come out and cheer on the two survivors on Sunday February 1. The league has filled up now that all snowbirds have arrived and we are going out with nine groups later this week.

My thanks to all members for their support.

Lazy River Golf Leagues Meeting/Party On Friday night, January 9, 2015 the SCRAMBLE GOLF Committee held their annual meeting to kick off the new season. There were more than one hun-dred Lazy River golfers and spouses at the club-house for cocktails at 4:00PM. The group was treated to pizza and hot dogs, good "golfer’s food"! The meeting summarized the 2014 season of events, financial report, and a brief highlight of the 2015 win-ter season for Lazy River golfers in the Couples, 18 hole men, Ladies, and nine hole men’s leagues.

It was a nice way for all Lazy River golfers to get ac-quainted again and discuss the upcoming season. Many thanks go out to Carol Beaudoin, Marsha Charest, Christina Overton, Joan Buttery, Roseanne Clark, Joan Rose, Joan Coia, and Linda McGee for doing all the work in the kitchen and hall. A round of applause was given for the bartenders and clean-up crew, led by Lou Rose, Gary Clark, Bill McGee, Fred Charest, and Phil Rodrigues. The Scramble Committee is in great financial shape and ready for a great season and the year-end tour-nament, which will be held this year on Monday, March 30 at the Jacaranda West Country Club in Venice. If there are any men and women who are owners or renters in Lazy River and would like to play golf with any of these leagues, don't hesitate to get in touch with any of the coordinators:

Couples - Bill & Marilyn Correia

18 Hole Men’s - Hal Jennerich

9 Hole Men’s – Tom O'Connell

Ladies Friday - Carol Gabalis & Josie Faria

We hope to see all of the golfers and any resident of Lazy River, owner or renters, at the big Winter Dinner sponsored by the LR Scramble Tourney. You can get tickets/info at the Wednesday 8:00AM Koffee Klatches or through rock mail. This year’s event will be in the Lazy River clubhouse on Saturday night, February 21 from 5:30PM to 8:00PM.

Bocce Ball There are two days each week when organized Bocce takes place.

Tuesdays are hosted by Susie Anderson and Paul Gunnels at 9 AM.

This group has the more serious players.

The Wednesday group, which meets at 11:00AM, is hosted by Linda & Phil Cole.

This is a more casual group of players.

In late December players may get together for prac-tice and fun as they sharpen their skill for the regular season. The games typically officially start in Janu-ary and run through April.

The Tuesday roster is full and there is a waiting list for subs.

Wednesdays still have spots open.

Bocce is a fun game played outside on our two courts between the pool and the unattached screen room.

If you have never played or have an interest, come on out and see what it’s all about.

Lazy River Pickleball Regularly scheduled pickleball sessions continue on court number one. For the last few years, the Lazy River Pickleball group has scheduled round robin pickleball play three days per week -- Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10:30AM to 12:30AM. Beginning in January we will schedule additional round robin play on Saturday afternoons starting at 12:30PM. All Lazy River residents and guests are welcome to participate. Loaner equip-ment is available. Just show up in sneakers ready to have some fun.

The Lazy River Board of Directors recently voted to create two temporarily marked regulation size pickleball courts at each end of tennis court number one. The Pickleball Club will

provide two portable pickleball nets which will be removed after

each playing session. Also, due to the rapidly increasing popularity of both tennis and pickleball, it was agreed that the Pickleball and Tennis Clubs should continue working together to identify longer term solutions for enhancing recrea-tional facilities to support pickleball, tennis and other games such as badminton, volleyball and basketball.

Lazy River Shuffling Now that the holiday season is behind us and most of the Snow-birds are back, the attendance is up at the courts both Monday evenings and Thursday morn-ings. We played our first inter-park game early January and we were soundly beaten. We swear the courts beat us and not their players as Holiday Park had the fastest courts I have ever experienced (that’s our excuse for this week and we are sticking to it). By the time you read this, our Annual Ham Dinner will have taken place to be followed in February by the very popular Pizza Party. Please review our bulletin boards for details. I will be posting inter-park standings and results each week.

The awnings that we installed late last season have worked out 100% and once again I want to thank the members and other caring residents for making them happen. We still have room for new residents and renters so come out and give it a try.

January was a great month for tennis. The weather was good: not too hot, not too cold, and rarely too wet. More importantly,

just about everyone who usually plays was in good health.

Healthy players = more games = more fun.

As one of our players says every time he steps on a court, “Life is good at Lazy River.”

This year’s fund raiser will be held on February 28.

There will be a bake sale (donations welcome), starting around 8:00AM. Around 11:00 a.m., we will be selling hot dogs, with chips and a soda. Like last year, the flea market will be limited to small household or decorative items, no clothing or furni-ture, please. Flea market donations may be dropped off at the screen room on February 28 be-tween 8:00AM and 8:30AM.

For more information contact Nancy Penoyar or Helga Strenzke.

Notes from the A Team (Activities) By now, you’ve received a rock mail offering some A Team support to streets that want to hold block par-ties. Please don’t feel pressured to have a party, but if it seems like something you and your neighbors want to do, we’re glad we can help. Just remember, if you plan to have a party, do not block any street. Roads must remain open for easy ins and outs.

We’re so sorry, but our efforts to find a public relations person have failed, at least so far. However, we do have contact information for the North Port Sun as well as easy to follow Guidelines for Publication. So, if you hold an event you feel is newsworthy, don’t be intimidated and don’t be modest. You can find the infor-mation you need in the library near the A Team mail box.

The 55 Alive Driving Program sponsored by AARP is coming to Lazy River on March 6th. It begins at 9:00AM and ends at 4:00PM with a lunch break from 12:00PM to 1:00PM. The cost is $15.00 for AARP members and $20.00 for non-members. Successful completion of the program could save you money on your car insurance for a period of three (3) years. Please use the sign-up sheet on the bulletin board. A maximum of 25 people may participate. Get set for another fabulous and fashionable afternoon at Lazy River. Thanks to the efforts of Barb Crothers and Elaine Kast, the A Team will once again host a fashion show. Save March 15. More information will fol-low.

Just a reminder! Koffee Klatches, now serve tea as well as coffee (decaf and regular). Fruit anyone? And, last but not least, on behalf of everyone who lives (or works) at Lazy River, we want to send a special thank you to Cathy Ashford for the years she volunteered to serve on the A Team. At the same time, our big welcome goes out to Jeanne Brown who has volunteered to replace her. Great job, Cathy, we’ll miss you. Thanks, Jeanne, for joining us. We look forward to working with you.

D ear Good Samaritan,

I can’t thank you enough for your attempt to rescue me when

my pedal boat had mechanical problems and stranded me under

the 41 bridge. I don’t know your name but I know a caring, concerned man who is more about helping a stranger than continu-ing his pleasant walk.

After you tried unsuccessfully to contact my husband and you went to get your car, my hus-

band happened by in his kayak and wondered what I was doing stuck in the mangroves. He towed me back to our dock. You exhibited the true meaning of Christmas – caring for others and giving of yourself. A lovely Christmas gift. Thank you! Marion Pierce 626 Harbor Isles

February Potluck The month of February is filled with thoughts of travel to chase away

those mid-winter blues, and we can’t forget Valentine’s Day.

So, our theme for this month is “A LOVE BOAT CRUISE” to put us in a great frame of mind. For just one evening

let’s make believe Lazy River is on a “Love Boat Cruise” to a tropical island para-dise. The date is Saturday night, February 7 in the clubhouse. Bring foods of all kinds. You can also bring dishes with pineapple and other tropical foods. Get in the swing of things with casual and/or tropical attire including wearing a Mu-Mu, Hawaiian print shirt, shorts, straw hats and sandals. You will be greeted on board by the Love Boat’s ship captain and crew who will direct you to the kitchen to drop off your potluck dish. You will then join other guests in the dining room to enjoy snacks, drinks of your choosing and a before dinner cruise program. Dinner hour is 6.00 pm. All good cruise ships have after dinner entertain-ment and so does our “Love Boat.”

We are offering an acoustical show of “folk’n roll” music, sung and played by SHAWN BROWN. His 20 years of performing has taken him to audi-ences from Chicago to Key West.

Potluck Entertainment In January 2014, we were privileged to have Shawn Brown perform at our potluck supper. Unfortunately, be-cause it was the same night as a big Indiana game, many of our residents decided to forego the potluck in order to root for their home team. Well, we are bringing Shawn back on February 7, so the rest of us can enjoy his singing, too. You may have seen Shawn playing at one of our local bars where he has become a fixture. He has built a solid reputation for playing all the songs you love. Make sure you put the potluck onto your calendar.

A great potluck and great entertainment – All for $3.00

Boat Club MESSAGE FROM THE COMMODORE

On January 8, the member-ship of the LRV Boat Club met to celebrate the reign of Commodore Joe Abbruzzese and his Board. For the last dinner Joe would preside over,

he requested Pot Roast, Mashed Potatoes with gravy,

Long Green Beans, served with a Salad, Rolls, Cof-fee and Cheese Cake for dessert.

There was the normal business to be take care of - Minutes, Treasury and Membership reports, up-dated by-laws were approved and announcements.

Problems for new members, being unfamiliar with reserving tables, had the Boat Club membership vote at a previous meeting to abandon this practice. People unaccustomed to the reserved tables often felt slighted and unwelcome when told the seat they were sitting in was reserved. There were inci-dences, when after being told this at three different tables, newcomers left never to return again. Hope-fully this practice will be abandoned in all of LRV, so our new residents will have first impressions of wel-coming, caring people eager to get to know new residents and renters. Joe publicly thanked some of the many, many vol-unteers that contributed their time and talents to make the Boat Club one to belong to. He spoke of the accomplishments of the past year. Under Joe’s leadership, programs initiated will live on for years. There is the web site, face book, emails, the boat dock, kayak rack, Easter egg hunt, Thanksgiving dinner, the addition of a second boat ride open to the community, the 2016 cruise, the list goes on

and on. Joe leaves a legacy to be proud of and as a club we are very proud to have had Joe Abbruzzese as Commodore.

The program for the evening was “Change of Watch”. Joe dismissed the retiring members of the Board and called the New Board members to take their places. The “Change of Watch” ceremony con-tinued as he lowered the Commodore Flag and our new Commodore, Phil Cole, raised it. Then Phil lowered the Vice Commodore flag and our new Vice Commodore, Paul Headly, raised it. Paul then lowered the Rear Commodore flag and our new Rear Commodore, Larry Hicks, raised it.

New directors Larry Price and Dick Case were intro-duced and received their name tags. New Commodore Phil Cole resigned as Social Chairman and appointed Joe Abbruzzese as the club’s new Social Chairman. Phil then spoke briefly thanking some key people serving the new Board. He then encouraged new members to become involved, to volunteer their time and talents, to actively seek out positions so our LRV Boat Club will continue to thrive and pros-per. It’s our members that make the club what it is.

I want to again thank Joe for his service. He va-cates his position, making it a difficult task to fill his shoes.

I do however have a high degree of confidence in our new Board to forge ahead. The meeting concluded and the Cheese cake was served.

Lazy River Boat Club Store The boat club store is open the first Wednesday of the month at the Koffee Klatch. The store is also open at most boat club dinners. If these times are inconvenient, please contact me and we can arrange to meet. The cotton polo shirts are being phased out of the inventory. They will always be available by special order if anyone prefers cotton over the micro-pique. Any new items you would like to see available at the boat store, please let me know.

CLUB NEWS

Computer Club News Thirty-six members attended the meeting of the Computer Club held on January 10. A survey was handed out to the members, asking them what computer equipment, tablets and phones they use. The results of the survey will help the pro-gram chairman to determine what subjects will be of interest.

The Computer Club classes started in January: Shari Schmitt taught four classes on iPhones and iPads, Carole Foley taught four classes on Microsoft Word and Bev Irons held a class on Kindles. Dates will be announced for classes that Bev Irons and Jacqui Hill will be offering on Android tablets or phones and classes that Shari Schmitt will be offer-ing on card making.

Marie Jennerich and Betty McNulty provided a very interesting program for the meeting: Marie, on the threats to our "Privacy on the Internet", and Betty, on some steps that we can take to avoid being subject to those threats. We were given a list of helpful pro-grams that we can employ to keep our electronic information safe and secure. Ron Gabalis had prepared two handouts, to help us when we are shopping to determine what tablet to choose and to compare features and prices of com-puters, very helpful summaries. The monthly workshop meetings for January, Febru-ary and March have started. They are always on the Saturday following the Computer Club meeting, at the Computer Hut. They are informal sessions where we try to solve our computer related prob-lems. The next workshop meeting will be on Febru-ary 21 at 10:00AM. All are welcome. The next Computer Club meeting will be on Febru-ary 14, 2015 and our favorite computer guru Bob Atwater (Bobbo) will be our speaker. Please join us and see what we are all about!

The Dance Club The month of January has already come and gone - how time flies as we have

fun here in Lazy River!! Jay Smith presented us with an exceptional per-formance for our January dance, and Jan & Rich Bigelow and Marie & Frank Mangio did a terrific

job hosting this dance, be-ing first time sponsors.

Another new group will come to us for the February 26 dance, 'Heart and Soul.' This February dance will be sponsored by Heike & Jim Canaday, and Sue & Bob Bennett. Tickets will be $5.00 for members and $7.00 for non-members, being available at the February Koffee Klatches. Everyone should have their 2015 memberships by now, but if not, renewals are $2.50 per person and new members are $5.00 per person. Please remember to bring your own snacks and refreshments. To allow our sponsors sufficient decorating time, please refrain from reserv-ing tables until 4:00PM on the day of the dance.

We are always looking for new talent in the South-west Florida area. If you should hear a great band, please get a business card and bring to any board member. We'll do our best to bring new performers to our monthly dances.

CLUB NEWS

Lazy River Canine Fitness Club Hello fellow Lazy River friends and neighbors. We are getting closer to the big voting day and we had the opportunity to make a final presentation to those who attended the Koffee Klatch on January 7. Thanks to the many people who participated in the presentation to make it a fun event.

Everyone in the Canine Fitness Club has worked tirelessly all year and we hope that every-one understands what we are trying to achieve by developing an off-leash park for our furry

friends. We have tried to address all of the concerns raised and hope that you are satisfied with our re-sponses. We have been very encouraged by all of the positive feedback that we have received. I was going to wait to write an article in the February Current after the vote, but this morning I happened to meet a lovely lady while out walking my dog. This lady has been here for a number of years but I had never met her before. She was out walking this morning because she is providing a foster home to a rescue dog named Buddy. As I spoke with her, I realized just how important it was for her to have this puppy and how it has made a difference for her. Having Buddy has encouraged her to get out to walk and given her a new pur-pose in her life. Dogs, or any pets, can and do have a positive effect on our lives, and I think especially on the lives of seniors. In turn, we need to provide a healthy life style for our dogs in the same way as they provide one for us. Exer-cise is a key component to a healthy life style and that is why we are asking for your support to develop an off-leash dog park. Our furry friends will thank you very much.

Come See What We Saw It's February and it's love month. We all love being here in Lazy River. In a little over a month, March 21, 2015, we will be con-ducting the annual Lazy River Horse Race Derby. The Em Cees (MC's) for this year's race will be Don McClenathan and Harry Ste-vens. Harry Stevens runs the Wine Tasting Club in the Park and will bring an exciting touch to the event. There are rumors about what's going to be on the menu. Is there a surprise coming after the 5th race? You will have to come to find out. Tickets will be on sale in the middle of this month.

Plans for the stained glass people to use the new addition to the Wood Shop are being final-ized and will probably be completed as you read this.

Ken Ireland had dreams of starting a "Wood Carving Club" in Lazy River and had contributed $60,000. to build an addition to the Wood Shop. In January, meetings were held and the Club and its’ agenda were established.

There is a good representation of women who have joined the Club. As you read this article, the carvers should be "whittling away." Ken would be happy to see the results of his donation and his wishes. I am sure Ken will be there in spirit. Thank you Ken. The annual meeting was held on January 24, 2015, but was after this article was written. If you did not attend or haven’t paid your dues yet, you can pay them any day at the Wood Shop. Ed Laetz and Clay Swenor have assembled an infor-mational pack that will be given to all new members when they sign up. This month's Helpful Hint is when using the saber saw:

To start a cut in the middle of a board you are cutting, if the board is relatively thin, tilt the saw forward on the ends of its sole plate and allow the blade to make its own starting hole by gently lowering the back end of the saw into the wood. In thicker wood, drill a starting hole in the waste area and saw out from it.

THE LRVers Lazy River Villagers Host Dinner on February 19, 2015 in the Club House

This will be the third dinner to be hosted by the LRVers.

The menu will be Spaghetti with meat or meatless sauce, you choose which you want!

Rolls, salad, coffee and dessert will round out the meal.

Tickets went on sale on the last Wednesday in January. A donation of $7.00 for non-members and $6.00 for members.

The theme for the February meal is “LRV Treasure Hunt”.

Clue sheets will be available at Koffee Klatches for a donation of $5.00.

You can walk, ride a bike, drive a golf cart, or car, around our village to find the answers.

All questions can be answered from the pavement or by entering common buildings and grounds. The person with the most correct answers will win our 1st place prize, and will be announced at the spaghetti dinner on February 19, 2015. At our January 29, 2015 “Draw or Share” dinner, LRV’ers members will decide who will benefit from this Feb-ruary event.

LRV’ers is a club that raises money for events, projects, or other clubs here in LRV.

It is a non-profit club and the members vote as to who will benefit from the money raised at each event. Membership is not necessary to participate in our events, however for a donation of $5.00, members get dis-counts on meals, can vote, and are eligible for the LRV’ers Board.

This is a fun event, clues can be tricky. Come join us, help LRV’ers raise funds that will be used right here in Lazy River Village to benefit your community.

Play “Treasure Hunt“, eat, drink, and have fun with your neighbors.

Then on March 19, LRVers will host a Corn Beef & Cabbage dinner, with a sing along of Irish tunes.

The Spotlight’s on You

Once Upon A Time… is the way most stories started “back in in

the day.” Our heroine has quite a story to tell. She has 90 years of memories that she graciously shared with me, and now with you.

Dona Schirm Poff, just out of high school, filled out an appli-cation for a job with the FBI. She did this without her par-ent’s knowledge. This was after the “Great Depression” and during the early part of

World War II. The appli-cation was for a position of the Records Depart-ment, where the FBI kept track of military person-nel, immigrants, defense plant workers, and sometimes fugitives.

Several weeks after the application was submit-

ted, Dona received a tele-gram instructing her to be in Washington, D.C in two weeks for her new job. She left her home in Indi-ana, boarded a train and arrived in D.C. a couple of hours before her scheduled meeting time.

Dona says she stored her luggage at the train depot, hopped in a cab and walked in the appointed room where the roll call for new employees was taking place. The roll call had progressed to the “M’s” and lucky for her, her surname “Schirm” started with an “S”. Her employer gave her directions for a place to stay and during her lunch break; she retrieved her luggage, and took a bus to her new room. She says she did all this, and got back, by the time her lunch break was over.

A short time later, Dona became friends with three other young ladies and they all shared an apartment together for the duration of WWII, and their jobs. To this day Dona and these women are still friends and keep in touch.

After her stint with the FBI, Dona returned to the mid-west and took a job in a 16MM film library. She worked there until retirement 30 years later.

In the meantime she met “the love of her life”, Russ Poff. Dona tells me they married and had 47 “really

good” years together. During that time they traveled quite extensively, first all over the U.S. (except Ha-waii), and then on their 25th Anniversary, they pur-chased “Eurail” passes, and for about $20.00 a day, they toured France, Austria, Germany, and Switzer-land for three weeks. They then went from England back to the States. In 1983 they took a trip from Amsterdam to Moscow. Dona said “the Russian people were very friendly”. Next, was a trip to both Slovakian and Scandinavian countries. In 1988 she and Russ took what Dona said was their “longest trip”, to China.

On July 23, 1984, Dona’s 60th birthday the couple became permanent residents of Lazy River. During her 30 years here, she has served on many commit-tees and done lots of volunteer work for the commu-nity. In 1999 she “kind of inherited” the care of the village library, and still to this day, donates her time and energy to seeing that our library runs smoothly. She loves reading many of the books she cares for, and two of her favorite authors are John Sanford and Michael Connelly. She loves mysteries best of all. Dona gives credit to several ladies, and maybe a gentleman or two that are good helpers. Since Dona recently fell and broke a wrist and a rib, these “good helpers” are holding down the fort.

It has been a challenge for me to squeeze 90 years of Dona’s life into one article (a book would have been better). For those who have not had the good fortune to know her yet, she is a remarkable and in-teresting woman. I am honored to call her my friend.

Dona lives at 141 Rarotonga Road. Drop in and see her sometime, she sure has some stories to tell.

See you next month when I’ll introduce you to some “new kids on the block”.
