We were talking about music, and the brain.About how we hear, andhow we process musical information. And about how we feel about what we hear. Some people respond veryemotionally to music.Others, less so.Neuroscientist Oliver Sackseven uses the term a musia,a condition whereby, the individualhas no response whatsoever to music. But most of us are musical maniacs. We can't get enough of music, and we respond to it very deeply. How deeply? You ever cry when you listen to music?Do you ever get chills?I do.Maybe you do too.Indeed so many people do thattwo leading neuroscientists,Robert Zatorre at McGill University andAnne Blood at Harvard, studied the phenomenon of chills whenlistening to pieces of classical music. They have shown, that there isa scientific reason for these chills. They have taken subjects.Played stirring music for them.Music that's known togive the subjects chills. And through simultaneous brain imaging. They have measured whathappens in the brain. Here's a slide of their results.Published in the prestigious proceedingsof the National Academy of Sciences. At the moment of the chills. There is a radical shift in blood flow,in certain key spots of the brain.Sometimes more, sometimes less blood, flows in the frontal cortex,in the amygdala, andin the hippocampus, for example. So music does affect our brain, andcauses us to feel the way we do,when we listen to it.We have a direct physiologicalresponse to music.[MUSIC]
