PAROCHIAL VICAR’S LETTER Last month we began our considera!ons of the Second Commandment, Thou Shalt not take the Name of the Lord Your God in Vain. One of the areas that fall under this commandment, for obvious reasons, is the use of inappropriate language. It is not uncommon in the confessional to hear people say they used “curse words.” Over

the years I have never corrected people when they said this, knowing what they really meant. However, with the rise of witchcra# and other occult prac!ces, I think it is now necessary to make the proper dis!nc!on. The use of vulgar or inappropriate language is using cuss words, not curse words. However, there are some occasions where a curse may be visited on another person. We have to remember that the devil is a legalist; he does not care if you did something inten!onally or if you did not even know it was wrong. So, we have to be aware that we can, without thought, uninten!onally curse someone. Most of the !me, when people use bad language, it is because they are upset. Unfortunately, in our society there are many places where vulgarity has become commonplace and good people begin using the words they hear all day long. Most o#en this would not be a mortal sin; it may not be a sin at all if the problem is habitual or if the word pops out uninten!onally. Nonetheless, it would be good to work on cleaning up our language. St. Paul instructs the Ephesians to “let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only such is as good for edifying…” (Eph 4:29). Are your words edifying? In other words, do your words build people up or tear them down? We are to be the leaven in the world, but we also have to be careful not to allow the world to become the leaven in our lives. Some!mes we use bad language because we want to fit in or show off. To be the leaven means we have to give good example. As we men!oned last month, even though use of God’s Name in vain has become almost ubiquitous, that does not give us permission to use His Name wrongly. These days, the use of several other disgus!ng words is quite prominent; the fact that “everyone else is doing it” does not mean we should be doing it. Cussing is bad because it gives bad example, develops a horrible habit, and brings people down. Cursing is an en!rely different issue. It is using our words, but with very evil intent. There are formal curses and spells which call upon the forces of evil to visit something nega!ve on a person, a group, a building, or whatever may be the inten!on of the person ini!a!ng the curse. Many people try to jus!fy Harry Po'er books, but one of the clearest reasons to stay away from them is that the author researched ancient curses from Egypt and other countries and wrote them right into the book. People are praying curses without even knowing it or thinking it is just fun. The demons take it very seriously; it is not fun.

There are three different kinds witchcra#: white, grey, and black witchcra#. Some people want to call themselves “good witches” because they are not trying to do evil things with their spells and curses. The only difference is what they use in their po!ons and curses, but it is all witchcra# which, Scripture tells us, is an abomina!on to God. So, even if someone is pu*ng a “good” spell on someone, it is s!ll a sin. Calling upon evil, even if it is for some “good” inten!on, is s!ll calling upon evil. Among the formal curses we also need to include groups like the Freemasons who have curses worked into their rituals as men advance higher in their ranks. The most common are curses on the family or on the first-born sons. Some of these curses are genera!onal, meaning they affect not only the members of the immediate family of the man making the oath, but it is passed down so it affects the grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and so on. In some of their oaths the men actually pray curses upon themselves con!ngent on their viola!ng the secrets of the society. There are curses which people put on others that are not formal nor are they inten!onally trying to curse the other person. This would occur if we say something to the effect of “I hope this (whatever bad thing it may be) happens to you.” If we really mean what we are saying, that is, in essence, a curse. Parental curses are among the most powerful. Most parents would never inten!onally curse their children, but it is the angry statement that comes out in a moment of conten!on. This could be saying the parent hopes something very bad will happen to the person (problems with a marriage, finances, difficul!es with children, etc.). We have to be very careful that we do not ask for something bad to happen to others. Using God’s Name as a curse is a mortal sin. This implies the use of the Holy Name of God to actually curse someone or as part of a formal curse (the Masons do this). This is not something most people would do inten!onally, but it happens frequently when people say “God d—n” this thing, this person, etc. Do we really want God to condemn someone? That’s what we are saying when we use this language. Hopefully this helps to make the dis!nc!on between cussing and cursing. Hopefully, it will also help us to work to using edifying language so as not to give bad example or to bring evil upon another. We want to steer clear of evil in any of its manifesta!ons. Guarding our tongues is a great way to keep on the straight and narrow path.

SAINT OF THE DAY - BLESSED ODDINO OF FOSSANO (1334-1400) Oddino was born in the town of Fossano, in the north of Italy. When he grew up, he was ordained a priest and was appointed to serve at the Church of Saint John the Bap!st in his hometown. He earned a good reputa!on for his care of the poor and the austerity of his life; his bishop had to order him to eat some meat for the sake of his health and to keep some of the !thes given to the parish for his own support and for the maintenance of the church building—Oddino was in the habit of giving everything away to the needy. Eventually, he became a Third-Order Franciscan and turned his house into a shelter for the des!tute. In 1381 he went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. There he was taken prisoner by the Turks for a short !me. He worked miracles while in prison. When he got back to Italy, Oddino was appointed governor of the Guild of the Cross, which was an associa!on for the care of the sick and the provision of hospitality to pilgrims. He built a free hospital with a hostel for pilgrims a'ached to it, which was said to have never turned away a poor person or pilgrim. It lasted into the nineteenth century. A#er he was put in charge of building a church, Oddino performed a number of miracles as it was constructed. For example, he was given superhuman strength to move large loads singlehandedly, and he raised from the dead a stonemason who had fallen from the church tower. When plague struck the town in 1400, he was fearless in comfor!ng the sick and taking the sacraments to the dying. He caught the plague himself and died from it. Blessed Oddino of Fossano, pray for us!
