29th International Conference of
Alzheimer’s Disease International
1 - 4 May 2014
Welcome from Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI)
Dear friends and colleagues,
It is my proud privilege to welcome you all to the 29th International Conference
of Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI), hosted alongside Asociación de
Alzheimer y Desórdenes Relacionados de Puerto Rico.
As the theme of this conference suggests, Dementia: Working Together for
a Global Solution, dementia is a growing international challenge, one which
requires global cooperation. Following the historical G8 Dementia Summit at the
end of last year, we hope to see a much greater emphasis on global awareness
and improvements in health and social policy, which can only be achieved if all
countries in the world work together.
We are happy to be back in the Latin American region, where we last met in
Venezuela in 2007. The conference programme promises a diverse and exciting
event which will look at the latest dementia research, highlight best practice in
care and address public policy issues. You will have the opportunity to engage
with the speakers during the sessions as well as plenty of time to network and
meet with your peers from across the globe throughout the conference.
During the event we will be presenting the fourth ADI Award to Dr Martin Prince,
Professor of Epidemiological Psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry in London,
coordinator of the 10/66 Dementia Research Group and author of ADI’s World
Alzheimer Reports. We will be recognising his outstanding contribution to
dementia awareness and tireless commitment to ADI. During the conference,
the winners of the second ADI-MetLife Awards for best dementia care education
projects and the first ADI-Home Instead Family Carer of the Year Award will also
be announced.
San Juan is a beautiful city, the historic heart of bustling Puerto Rico. It is a
beautiful island between North America, the Caribbean and Latin America in a
country popularly known in Spanish as ‘la isla del encanto” meaning “the island
of enchantment”.
I would like to thank the Asociación de Alzheimer y Desórdenes Relacionados
de Puerto Rico, particularly the Local Organising Committee (LOC) and LOC
Chair, Enna Santiago, for their remarkable efforts in helping us to organise this
event. Their dedication, commitment and team work are truly admirable.
I sincerely hope that this conference will lead to greater things in the field of
dementia both in Puerto Rico, Latin America and around the world.
I am sure you will find this conference both enjoyable and valuable with lots of
opportunities to expand your networks and gather new information which will
help in your work to improve the lives of people with dementia and their families.

29th International Conference of
Alzheimer’s Disease International
1 - 4 May 2014
Mensaje de Bienvenida de la Asociación Internacional de Alzheimer (ADI)
Queridos amigos y colegas,
ADI-Home Instead Family Carer of the Year dirigido al mejor cuidador del año.

29th International Conference of
Alzheimer’s Disease International
1 - 4 May 2014
Welcome from the Local Organising Committee (LOC)
Dear friends and colleagues,
On behalf of the Puerto Rican Alzheimer Disease and Related Disorders’
Association, I want to give you a warm welcome to the 29th Alzheimer’s
Disease International Conference, in the beautiful island of Puerto Rico.
We are delighted to host this great scientific event for the first time in our
history. “Dementia: Working Together for a Global Solution” will bring together
researchers, physicians, allied health care professionals, family caregivers,
representatives from national Alzheimer associations around the world and
persons living with dementia. This international conference provides the
opportunity to share advanced knowledge and expertise in dementia and
related disorders.
It is our pleasure that Puerto Rico is hosting an event that will bring together
many professionals from different specialties, to share their findings in
latest investigations about dementia and lead the route we can take to help
persons affected with it. Dementia is not a condition that only affects persons
diagnosed with it, but also impacts families and increments an emotional
and financial burden on them. Working together for a global solution will
bring us updated information about latest findings and best practices to
approach dementia, will unravel how persons with dementia approach their life
challenges and will guide us to improve the quality of life of affected persons,
their caregivers, and families. This conference will help all of us to work
together to raise global awareness about dementia.
Please take time to explore Puerto Rico, a beautiful island in the Caribbean.
The city of Old San Juan provides the opportunity to visit antique Hispanic
castles, cathedrals, museums, observe the walls that surround the city along
the Paseo La Princesa, as well as enjoying the vivid life of its shops and
restaurants. You will enjoy a visit to an island which offers many attractive
amenities, like el Yunque, our rain forest, beautiful beaches, and our splendid
cuisine.
Please accept my best wishes for an enjoyable and productive international
conference.

Mensaje de Bienvenida del Comité Organizador Local (LOC)
Queridos amigos y colegas,
productiva.

The Quest Continues
Building on a century of pioneering Tau research
TauRx: Working together for a global solution by
halting the progression of Alzheimer’s and Frontotemporal Dementia
• Our mission is to discover,
develop and commercialize
innovative products for the
diagnosis, treatment and
cure of neurodegenerative
diseases caused through
protein aggregation.
• Science and innovation are
more than our business.
They are our guiding
principles. Our lead
investigational product,
LMTX™ - a tau aggregation
inhibitor - has entered Phase
3 clinical trials in Alzheimer’s
Disease and Frontotemporal
Dementia (FTD). These studies
are now actively recruiting and
involve over 1,500 patients in
20 countries worldwide.
