Think about how your meals would be diff erent without corn,
beans, squash, tomates, limes, avocados, oineapples, yams,
potatoes, cashews, turkey, chiles, peanut, vanilla and
chocolate. What do these foods have in common? They all had
their origin in the Americas and were unknown in Europe until
Colombus brought them there from his voyages in the 15 t h
century. Today these foods are found in dishes in many
countries.
The product exchange benefi ted both sides of the Atlantic
Ocean. The Europeans brought to the Americas a wide range of
foods including chicken, pork, beef, milk, cheese, sugar,
grapes, and grains such as wheat and barley.
CONEXIONES: LA HISTORIA

Can you think of anything in English
that uses two nouns back to
back?
USING A NOUN TO DESCRIBE ANOTHER NOUN
An example of this is vegetable soup. These are two nouns back to back.
Notice that the noun being describe comes second.
CONTINUED >>>>>
Guess what, in Spanish it is backwards! The noun being describe will come fi rst followed by “de.”
Example: vegetable soup = la sopa de verduras
Another example is strawberry yogurt = el yogur de fresas
The noun following “de” will not change even though the fi rst one is plural.
Example: el sándwich de jamón los sándwiches de jamón
