Design & Surface Techniques

Open Clay Studio is offered to students enrolledin our clay program in order to allow students tobe able to finish pieces in progress from class orpractice techniques learned in class. It is open forformer students, but it is not intendedfor those students to produce new work, justfinish pieces in progress. No instruction is offeredduring open studio. Students must sign in uponarrival at PFAC and sign out atdeparture. Students are responsible for cleaningup at the end of open studio hours. All work mustbe done on premises. Our clay studios cansupport only the amount of work that can beachieved by students during class and openstudio times.

Open Studio is available during the run of thecurrent course session. However, please notethat PFAC may change or discontinue thisprogram at any time due to class conflicts,weather events, or other special occasions.Students will be given as much advance notice aspossible of any changes to regular hours.

If the classrooms are not properly cleaned, wereserve the right to cancel open studio hours.Students may not use the clay studio classroomsat any other times than open studio or duringtheir class.

Ceramics students with moderate to advanced skills will undertake a variety of clayprojects, based on techniques demonstrated by the instructor, which they can practiceto acquire facility in areas new to them, or can use them as a starting-point to developand expand the ideas in a new direction of their own choosing. Teaching Artists:Terry James is a longstanding artist andgraduate of CNU, where his areas ofconcentration were Fine and PerformingArts & Philosophy. An interest in doingColonial era ceramic reproductionsadvanced to specializing in the museumquality reproductions of 17th-18thcentury British Delft.

Marshall Turner has 25 years of teachingexperience in ceramics and holds abachelor of fine arts degree in ceramicsfrom the University of Georgia.

Phyllis Canupp has studied pottery since1994, earning a certificate in StudioProduction Pottery from TidewaterCommunity College in 2003 and a degreefrom Virginia Wesleyan in 2004.

Betty Anglin is a founding member ofPFAC and has been teaching at PFAcsince 1972. She's been recognized by theVirginia Watercolor Society and he workis held in the collections of the HighMuseum of Art in Atlanta, the VirginiaMuseum of Fine Arts and the ChryslerMuseum in Norfolk.

Jim Dees began his study of watercolorwith Phyllis Greenway at PFAC in 2003.Since then, Dees has attended regionaland interational workshops, studying avariety of techniques in watercolor,acrylic, figure drawing and portraiture.He is a former president of the VirginiaWatercolor Society

This class is for all ceramics enthusiasts and addresses the challengesof constructing a variety of figurines and sculptural elements. Theprojects will be based on altering thrown components. Given thestrong hand-building element, students with no or minimal throwingexperience will find as full a forum as more experienced throwers. Ceramics Sculpture

Design and Surface Techniques: NEW WORKSHOPThis is an intensive 2 day hand-building workshop which will focus onthe human face. I will demonstrate the techniques for modeling humanfeatures, paying close attention to the correct proportions and facialfeatures. The students will use these methods to create their ownindividual bust which they will hollow out and prepare it for the firingprocess. I will discuss types of finishes and mounting presentation.Students must provide their own armatures. Hands on GlazemakingIn this practical class, we will start by making test tiles, then go on to try out severalvariants of a single cone 6 base glaze. We’ll add a variety of different ingredients tothe original recipe, to illustrate how certain materials increase or decrease glazeappearance, and affect the shades and tones given by various glaze colorants. Alongthe way, you’ll pick up basic vocabulary, learn about safe handling of raw materials,and start to become familiar with glaze behavior. Fused Glass Bowl or Plate

Fused Glass WorkshopThis one day workshop covers a wide variety of glass fusing techniques to explore.Students can begin with creating fused glass jewelry, glass tile, a small bowl or plate,a slumped candle holder or vase, plus a small 3-D cast object. The class will introducestudents to a variety of fusing processes and focus while building up their glass skills. Thebasic skills, like glass cutting, shaping and designing, as well as, how to use a glass kiln willbe covered. This class will introduce you to theworkings of your camera with thecomponents identified and explained. Learn the art of calligraphy by practicing italics lettering! This class is designed to teach youtechniques to improve the artisticelements of your photography. Youwill learn to incorporate the rule ofthirds, use power points whencomposing your photograph, as well asthe power of leading lines. Learnwhen to use aperture priority andshutter priority---and, yes, sometimesprogram mode! Learn how to see andread light, how to effectively useexposure compensation, when to addflash outdoors, and how to effectivelyuse backlighting and side lighting. REGISTRATIONAs a privilege of PFAC membership, members enjoy reduced tuitionand early registration. Classes that do not meet minimum registrationrequirements may be canceled one week prior to meeting. Minimumregistration is generally six students; average class size is 12. 

REFUNDSA full refund will be given for cancellations made 10 days prior to startof class. Less than 10 days prior to first class, a refund will be givenless $25 administration fee. After the first class, refund is 50%. Afterthe second class, there is no refund. For workshops of five sessionsor less, no refund is available after the first class. Not attending aclass does NOT constitute an official withdrawal or cancellation oftuition or fees. Make up classes are handled on an individual basis,with Management approval. 

OUR MISSIONPFAC is the premier arts advocate in the region working to create astronger community through art. PFAC has something for everyone;art is what you make it. 

MEMBERSHIPFor a one­time, annual cost, our members receive free admission toall exhibits, invitations to select events, discounts on classes and inthe gift shop, early class registration and guest passes. 

Circle members make annual tax­deductible gifts in the the form ofcash, stocks or in­kind goods and services valued at $150 or more. Inaddition to their membership fee, they receive guest passes,invitations to circle member events, like our Dinner in the Galleryevent, and admission to over 700 in North America.
