Lon Badeaux (pronounced bad-dough), who prior

to serving as the Indians’ interim head track and

field coach for six weeks was an eight-year as-

sistant with the program, was named Arkansas State

University’s head track and field coach July 28,

2007.

When long-time coach Jay Flanagan an-

nounced his retirement in the spring of 2007, ASU

didn’t have to go far to find his successor.

“We are thrilled to announce Coach Badeaux

as ASU’s new head track and field coach,” said Dr.

Dean Lee, ASU Director of Athletics.

“He comes highly regarded and highly re-

spected by not only our student-athletes and the

track and field community in Jonesboro, but also by

his peers throughout the country. We have also

been extremely grateful and impressed with his

leadership and management style while he served

as interim head coach during the transition period.

“During the process of interviewing and visit-

ing with multiple candidates, we found that we kept

using Coach Badeaux as the standard in our evalu-

ation process and realized that we had the best can-

didate already in-house. We are delighted to have

someone of his character, stature and skill level to

lead our track and field program.”

During his time at Arkansas State, Badeaux coached 47 Sun Belt Conference champions, seven

school record holders, 29 regional qualifiers, 17 national qualifiers, five All-Americans and one Olympian.

He was named runner-up for the 2004 Mondo National Assistant Coach of the Year for jumps and multi-

events by the USA Track and Field Coaches for Division I-A. He was also named to the US Track and

Field and Cross Country Coaches Association National Committee for scheduling.

“I am very excited about becoming ASU’s head track and field coach and very grateful to Dr. Lee

for giving me this opportunity,” said Badeaux. “I look forward to putting together a great program that

can build on its past success and great support from the community, athletic department and University.

We want to be competitive on a national level and will continue to compete for conference champi-

onships.”

Badeaux was a part of ASU’s 2006 Men’s Indoor Sun Belt Conference Championship and was

serving as interim head coach when student-athlete James Jenkins was named All-America after an

third-place finish in the triple jump at the NCAA Track and Field Championships.

A native of New Iberia, La., Badeaux received his bachelor’s degree from the University of South-

western Louisiana in health and physical education. He received his master’s degree in exercise sci-

ence from Arkansas State University.

Jason Brooks, one of the top sprinters in Arkansas

State University history, joined the staff as an as-

sistant track and field coach August 21, 2007.

Brooks is serving as the sprint coach for the Red

Wolves.

“Jason has been my number one guy from the be-

ginning,” said Badeaux. “He has great recruiting ties,

he has a strong chemistry with the teams, he has great

leadership qualities, and he has a great rapport with

people and understands how the practice programs

work.

“He also brings instant credibility through his ac-

complishments. When I visit with a 400-meter runner,

I tell them we have a coach on our staff who has run a

46 in that event and that gets his attention.”

Brooks, who graduated from ASU in December

2006 with a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Stud-

ies, is a three-time NCAA qualifier in the 400-meter

dash and once as part of ASU’s 4x100-meter relay

squad. He spent the spring semester working on a

second degree in physical education.

“I am so excited,” said Brooks. “I love coaching.

That’s one of the reasons I started working on a sec-

ond degree. And, I can’t image any better place to be

than Arkansas State. It means a lot to me to coach at

the university I attended and know that the athletic ad-

ministration and Coach Badeaux believe in me.”

Brooks, from Memphis, Tenn., owns the fourth-

fastest outdoor time at ASU in the 400 with 46.71

and has run

47.75 indoors,

which also

ranks fifth-best

all-time in

school history.

He also

rewrote his

own schedule

record in 2007

in the 600-yard

run with a time of 1:11.59. In addition, he has competed occasionally in

the 400-meter intermediate hurdles.

Matt Kraft, a former assistant coach at the University of New Mexico

who specializes in the throwing events, joined Arkansas State’s

track and field coaching staff in the same capacity in October 2007.

During the 2007-08 season Kraft coached two athelets to outstanding

finishes in indoor and outdoor throwing performances. Bryant Hankton fin-

ished 3rd at the Indoor Sun Belt Conference Championships and moved

to second in all time ASU weight throw performances. Jesse Williams fin-

ished 1st at the Outdoor Sun Belt Conference Championships in discuss

and was a NCAA Regional Qualifier.

During the 2008-09 seasons Kraft coached, two all-conference per-

formers in Hankton who placed second in the men's weight throw during

the 2008-09 Indoor season and freshman Corwin Pace who placed third

in the men's shot put during the Indoor season. Pace also moved into ninth

place on ASU's all-time discus performances list and finished fourth in the

shot put and discus during the Outdoor season. While coached by Kraft,

Williams finished second in the men's discus during the 2009 Sun Belt

Outdoor Championships to qualify regionally. Williams also scored points

for the Red Wolves in the shot put and hammer throw.

Kraft has served as a volunteer coach at New Mexico and was re-

sponsible for strength and conditioning as well as the training and testing

programs. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Kraft also served as

a mentor to UNM’s student-athletes and monitored academic perform-

ance.

In his five years there, the Lobos won two Mountain West Conference

titles and produced nine All-Conference performers. His throwers also

qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships 13 times with one auto-

matic qualifier to the national championships. In all, Kraft’s student-athletes rewrote five University of New Mexico school records.

“I’m excited to be here,” said Kraft. “We have a very good oppor-

tunity here to make the throws program a dominant force in the Sun

Belt Conference and to be very competitive in the NCAA Mideast Re-

gion and nationally.

“It is my goal to make this a dynamic throwing program that will

help the team with conference championships. I also consider it a vital

part of my duty as a coach to be a mentor to the young men and

women I work with and help them develop not just athletically, but also

personally. We will pursue excellence in all that we do.”

Kraft’s experience in the throwing events began when he threw at

Colorado State University under nationally-respected throwing coach

Brian Bedard in the early 1990’s. He has also had the opportunity to

work directly with legendary throwing coach Art Venegas of UCLA.

Prior to his stint at New Mexico, Kraft spent six years in the United

States Army and was responsible for the training, health, welfare, de-

velopment and preparedness of soldiers under his charge. He also

served as a flight instructor for enlisted helicopter crew training.

Kraft is a 2003 graduate of New Mexico with a Bachelor of Arts de-

gree in Political Science. He graduated Summa Cum Laude and Phi

Beta Kappa with a 4.02 grade point average.

In 2007, he received his Master of Science degree from UNM in

Physical Education with specialization in Sports Administration. A graduate of distinction, he posted a cumulative 4.05 gpa.

Kyle Chandler comes to the Red Wolves after positions at Wash-

ington State University and at the Colorado prep level having

coached for 17 years. He is a Department of Music faculty

member and functions as the Coordinator of Music Education and

Director of Chamber Singers & Vocal Jazz.

Chandler helped guide the ASU men's and women's XC pro-

grams with immediate success his first season. The women's team

earned an NCAA Division I South Central Region #13 ranking and

the men and women enjoyed a team sweep at the ULM Warhawk In-

vitational. He led the Red Wolves to a strong NCAA South Regional

showing with the men finishing 16th and the women 17th. Individu-

ally, several men and women set lifetime and/or career bests during

the Cross Country season with Chelsea Weaver winning the individ-

ual title at the ULM Warhawk Invitational.

During the track & field seasons several runners have had imme-

diate success climbing into the Top 10 All-Time ASU marks in events

from the 800 meters up through the 10K including new school

records in the Women's mile by Samantha Salinas and the Women's

Distance Medley Relay. Points generated from the Middle Dis-

tance/Distance runners at the Sun Belt Indoor Conference meet

were the most by these event groups in recent years.

As head Cross Country/Track & Field coach at Mountain View

High School, Chandler's squads regularly earned high marks during

his tenure. His teams earned 28 Conference, Regional and State

Championships in seven years. During that time he coached 16 Top 10 state squads with 12 of those teams finishing in

the Top 5. State Cross Country titles were won by the Mountain View girls (2003 and 2004), boys (2005), and by the boys

Track & Field teams (2006) with two State Championship teams earning #23 and #9 National prep rankings.

Early in his career, Chandler received the distinguished 2003 Sason Sharify Outstanding Cross Country/Track &

Field Young Coach Award from the Colorado High School Coaches Association (CHSCA). He was named the Skyline and

Northern League Coach of the Year in both Cross Country and Track & Field nine (9) times. Additionally, Chandler was

named the Colorado Coach of the Year five (5) times by CHSCA, the Rocky Mountain News and the Denver Post.

Not only have Chandler's teams seen great success, individuals under his direction have also flourished. As head

coach, 215 athletes earned All-Conference/All-State Academic Honors. A total of 167 All-Conference Athletic Honors and

76 Individual Championships have been won with a near even split between boys and girls. Of those athletes, 137 earned

All-State Status and 13 were State Champions.

Chandler helped start the Loveland RoadRunners youth XC/Track & Field division for United States Track & Field

(USATF) and Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Junior Olympic competitions in 1998. Additionally, he has coached CARA

youth recreational XC/Track & Field for several years. Both teams and individuals under his guidance have won State and

Regional USATF and AAU Championships as well as All-America Status at the National level, including one National

Champion.

Chandler ran at Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, Neb., for Coach Jim McMahon, and at the University of

Northern Colorado for Scott Hall earning All-Conference, All-District/Region and Scholar-Athlete All-America Honors.

Chandler is a USATF Level 2 registered coach in both Endurance and Sprint/Hurdle/Relay events, and is a USATF Level I

Track & Field Instructor. He and his wife, Jamie, reside in Jonesboro having been blessed with 9 children.

The Arkansas State UniversityAthletic Department announced thelargest single donation in its his-tory, a $400,000 gift from CharlesLuter that will be used to enhancethe athletic academic facility, at apress conference held at the newlynamed Charles F. Luter Family Ac-ademic Success Center in Septem-ber of 2008.

“We are proud to announce thelargest gift in the history of ASUAthletics of $400,000, and we arealso proud to announce the renam-ing of this facility to the Charles F.Luter Family Academic SuccessCenter,” said ASU Director of Ath-letics Dr. Dean Lee at the press

conference. “We have the great opportunity to announce the completion of what we call the third phase of our performance enhancement complex. We previously had theBoe and Myrna Adams Strength and Conditioning Center, the Tim and Terri Langford Sports Medicine Center and now a vital and very important part of what we call the Ac-ademic Success Center.

“That is a very appropriate name for what we do here, because we have had a tremendous amount of academic success,” Lee added. “We work extremely hard to build aculture where our student-athletes want to succeed not only in competition, but in the classroom, and they have done that.”

The long list of ASU’s most recent academic achievements includes the latest statistics showing a 64.1 percent graduation rate of its student-athletes, the highest percentagein school history. Additionally, the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll had a total of more than 300 representatives during the 2007 academic year. Arkansas State won four SunBelt Conference academic championships over the past year, representing the highest grade-point average in the league for a given sport. Among ASU’s winning teams wasthe football program, which won the Sun Belt’s academic title for the fifth time out of the last six years.

Also over the past year, 100 ASU student-athletes were placed on the 2007-08 SBC Commissioner’s List and Academic Honor Roll. In perhaps the truest measure of aca-demic success, 44 student-athletes received their degrees from Arkansas State University over the last year as well.

“I was very enthusiastic about making this contribution to ASU with the academic success that it has had,” said Luter. “I hope this contribution will add to the continuedacademic success and build on that academic success. I hope when we enhance this facility, it’s going to add to the entire University and the sports complex out here. Ul-timately, what we have to think about is the student body as a whole and the student-athletes and how hard they work to be successful.”

The 3,000 square-foot Charles F. Luter Family Academic Success Center serves as a foundation for structure, discipline and organization for the education of all ASU stu-dent-athletes. The facility, coupled with innovative programs and equipment, currently houses the academic support staff, tutors, computer labs, a resource room, study areas, tutorial rooms, small group study centers, a large conference room, the compliance office and spring sports coaching offices.

The renovation project will include a new foyer that will serve as a reception area for guests and recruits as they enter the facility, a new front that will create a strongerimage, new computers, new tutorial rooms and restructuring of the computer lab. Some additions will assist in strengthening a culture of academic success through astronger presence and recognition of Red Wolves student-athletes. A special wall and display area will be added for those student-athletes who make the honor roll. Also, those student-athletes who graduate will have their pictures displayed throughout the year until the next group of graduating seniors comes in. Another phase of the reno-vation is a “Wall of Honor” that will recognize special student-athletes who have come to Arkansas State and excelled in their business, in their profession or in their com-munity. The new facility will display a special plaque in honor ofCharles and Kay Luter as well.

When the Arkansas State University athletics program reaches its 100th birthday this year, DeanLee's name will figure prominently in the celebration.

ASU athletics is entering its 100th year and Lee still has a little more time to continue restoring theold and building new tradition for Arkansas State.

Under Lee’s direction, the ASU athletic department enjoyed another significant year in 2008-09. Notonly did ASU enjoy some of the most exciting moments ever on the fields, courts, and tracks, but also inthe arenas of academics, donor and alumni involvement, community service and achievement.

The 2008 AAFF’s Outstanding Athletic Director, Lee serves on the NCAA Men’s Basketball IssuesCommittee, the BCS Athletic Directors Advisory Committee and the Division 1A Athletic Directors Associ-ation Board of Trustees.

He has guided the athletic department to annual success academically and competitively, but lastyear ASU athletics once again enjoyed growth through a number of unique accomplishments and projectsas well.

For instance, the ASU Athletic Department received the largest single donation in its history, a$400,000 gift from Charles Luter that will be used to enhance the athletic academic facility. ASU securedan unprecedented $1 million contract for its Sept. 4, 2010 football game at Auburn, the Red Wolves set aschool-record in football attendance, festivities such as Jazz in Jonesboro continued to grow and improve, the bowling team made its second straight appearance in the NCAA National Championships and two stu-dent-athletes were named Academic All-America as well. His vision for ASU Athletics was revealed in avideo called “Inside A-State Athletics, which focuses on the Red Wolves athletic programs and how the ath-letic department plans to meet challenges in the future.

As recent as 2008, 206 field-level seats and new party boxes available for corporate events wereadded to Tomlinson Stadium, the Convocation Center weight room underwent major renovations that in-cluded new weights and cardio equipment and Lee was instrumental in the recruitment and hiring of JohnBrady, who was just two years removed from an NCAA Final Four appearance, as the Red Wolves newmen’s basketball coach.

Those are just a few of the many ways the ASU athletic department has continued to develop underLee, who is always looking for new and creative ways to take the Red Wolves athletic program to the nextlevel while maintaining its main focus on academics, competitive performance and a well-rounded envi-ronment for student-athletes.

Entering his eighth year as Director of Athletics, Lee is even hungrier for ASU to have continued suc-cess in all areas. He has already made great strides in enabling Arkansas State's Department of Athleticsto become one of the most respected programs around.

Dr. Lee became ASU's 10th Director of Athletics July 9, 2002. It wasn't long before the departmentbegan to experience important and progressive changes which were capped by an unprecedented “Stateof A-State” address in the spring of 2004.

When he concluded the address to a packed house, there was no mistaking that he is committed tobuilding a successful program at ASU.

In a very short time, he has orchestrated sellout and capacity crowds, overseen the expansion andgrowth of ASU's athletic facilities, and provided sound leadership to both the athletic staff and populationof student-athletes.

Lee came to ASU from Oklahoma State University, where he was the Associate Director of Athleticsfor External Operations.

His administrative experience at two NCAA Division I-A universities, OSU and the University ofArkansas, and his achievements in mobilizing financial support make him well-suited for Arkansas StateUniversity and Northeast Arkansas. While at the University of Arkansas, Lee served as the Vice Presidentof the Razorback Foundation.

In addition, Dr. Lee's experience as athletic director at Arkansas Tech University and his familiarity withASU and the state of Arkansas help him feel right at home.

He earned his bachelor's degree in 1979 and master's in education at Henderson State University, then completed his doctor of education degree at the University of Arkansas in 1989.

Although born in Tulsa, Okla., Lee competed in high school sports in Berryville, Arkansas, and wasselected to play in the all-Star basketball and football games in 1975.

He also played basketball, baseball and tennis at Henderson State, where he later served as an as-sistant coach. He played in two national championship games as a member of Henderson State’s basket-ball team. He was head basketball coach at Malvern High School early in his career.

Dean and wife Reba are the parents of two daughters, Diamond Olivia (14) and Anna Pearl (12).
