TABLETOPS/TECHNOLOGY

SPOTLIGHTS

This year’s Conference will feature bot the traditional Tabletop Exhibits and a limited number of Technology Spotlight “mini-presentations:.Both the Tabletop Exhibits and Technology Spotlights will be held on Wednesday, October 2nd during the evening reception.

Complimentary drinks and heavy Hors d’oeuvres will be provided.Dine on your own after the reception.

will be limited to one table and no more than two representatives (one representative must be registered for the 2013 Technical Conference). The exhibit’s purpose is to provide ink companies’ technical people an additional opportunity to interface with the technical counterparts, from raw material suppliers as well as Instrument and equipment manufacturers.

will be scheduled concurrently in an adjacent area. The Presentation (7-10 minutes maximum) should be focused on new or novel technology which is signi#cant for the ink manufacturers? It can highlight a product or series of products within your portfolio of sales o"erings. A LCD projector/screen and laptop computer.

In 2012, the TechConference exhib-itors included many of our TAMs as well as some new suppliers and consulting #rms. Please join us in 2013.

8:00 am - 8:45 amT5: NPIRI LECTURE SERIES WINNER PRESENTATIONTBAThe winner will be selected and announced closer to the conference.

T6: FOOD PACKAGING REGULATIONS AND THE PRINTING INK MANUFACTURERCatherine Nielsen, Keller and HeckmanUnderstanding how the Federal Food and Drug Administration regulations apply to food packaging is crucially important to ink manufacturers, substrate suppliers and printers. This session will provide an overview of the food packaging regulations (both in US and EU) and regulatory trends, directions and issues in both markets

8:45 am - 9:30 amT7: AVAILABLE PRINTING PLATE OPTIONS & HOW THEY AFFECT THE PRINT IMAGE DISCUSSIONRick Pomeranka, PrintronThis session will cover the available print plate options (analog liquid photopolymer, IP Photopolymer and digitally imaged sheet photopolymer) and how variables in a print plate package like plate materials, thickness, cushioning materials and cylinder construction impact the printed image. They will also share the results of a

T8: Risk Analysis in the Global Food Contact Supply Chain – An Industry PerspectiveJim Huang, BemisThe con!uence of FDA Food Safety Modernization Act and the Global Food Safety Initiative has created new regu-latory challenges for the converting industry and its suppliers upstream. This presentation will provide an industry practitioner's perspective on the state of risk analysis in the global supply chain and o"er an industry consortium's recommendation to improve the process e#ciency throughout.

9:45 am - 10:30 am

Grant Shouldice, Flint GroupIn recent years, alternative sources of light energy have become a viable and economical technology for o"set printing processs. In order to maximize the full potential of this new equipment and the associated value proposition, the industry needs to overcome certain technological barriers, such as lamp energy and the lack of suitable photo initiators. It is now possible to optimize the chemistry and process in order to produce inks for packaging and even low migration inks for primary food packaging using alternative energy sources. A review of the advances associated with o"set printing inks in this area is presented

Cheryl Falvey, Crowell & Moring LLPAn overview and updat on new, pending and existing regulations a"ecting the ink manufacturer including: Toxic Substances Control Act Modernization, Solvent Wipes Rule, & Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act 2008

10:30 am - 11:15 am

Brett Beauregard, HuntsmanTitanium dioxide (Ti02) is a component of many printing inks and coatings. Selecting the appropriate Ti02 can have a signi#cant performance impact on the formulation. An understanding of the critically important tech-nical characteristics of base pigment design and surface treatment properties will insure that you are using the right Ti02 pigment.

Je! Wooster, Dow Chemical CompanySustainability continues to grow in importance to companies, individuals, governments, and non-govern-mental organizations. As more and more organizations establish formal sustainability goals and programs, it is important for suppliers to understand the fundamental drivers that shape these programs and goals. As the understanding of sustainability improves these programs and goals adapt to the new reality. The presentation will review the newest developments in sustainability thinking and discuss how changes in thinking require new actions by the value chain.

11:15 am - Noon

Charlie Hsu, BASFThere is a market need for a safe-handling, water-based ink technology for use in high chemical resistant applications. The incorporation of crosslinking chemistry is recognized as an e"ective means of achieving chemical and solvent resistant properties. We will discuss the development of a novel two-pack, dispersion/crosslinking system as the basis for a waterborne ink system that meets the performance requirements of the high resistance label and packaging market with a favorable toxicity pro#le and long pot life.

Jon Hellerstein, MWVThis presentation will provide an overview and update of the technical details, challenges and complications related to the intergration of the GHS into OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard. Understanding the “nuts and bolts” technical issues is critical to developing a GHS compliant hazard communication porgram

Noon - 6:00 pmGOLF OUTING (Optional) 1pm - 6pmThe Golf Tournament will be played at the beautiful Blackhawk Trace Golf Club at the Hilton Chicago/Indian Lakes Resort.  Tee-o" time of 1:00 pm.  The registration fee will include greens fee, cart, lunch, refreshment cart, and prizes. Club rental cost isn not included in the registration fee. Be sure to provide your handicap when you register.

6:30 pm -10:30 pm

8:00 am - 8:45 am

Tom Dunn, Flexpacknology“Good Manufacturing Practice” has long been required for producing food packaging intended for use in the US. The government (US FDA) never published detailed regulations for compliance with the requirement. These requirements impose substantive and procedural obligations on both printers and printing ink manufacturers.

Mark Bohan, Printing Industries of AmericaWe shouldn’t let the remarkable developments in digital printing obscure the fact that important developments continue to take place in the pressrooms. From vision inspection to long-running process-free plates to new e%ciencies in Very Large Format (VLF) presses, innovative technologies are changing the way customers print. Even serious students of the pressroom can bene#t from this review of the key trends impacting printers.

9:30 am - 9:45 amBREAK

9:45 am - 10:30 am

Dave Savastano, Ink WorldPrinted electronics are beginning to reach the market. For printed electronics manufacturers, conductive inks are key to emhancing the performance of their products, and there are a wide range of materials - metallics, carbon nanotubes, nanomaterials, graphene and others - to choose from. This panel will consist of a few of the more innovative ink manufacturers in this area and the products they o"er.

10:30 am - 11:15 am

Tucker, McNeil, MWVUnderstanding packaging from a consumer perspective provides critical information for all players in the pack-aging suppy chain. The details from this in-depth consumer satisfaction survey will provide important insights into future trends and directions in the packaging market.

11:15 am - Noon

Brian Ashe, X-Rite, Inc.This presentation provides a practical demonstration of color in the digital age. Using the Cloud for digital color data exchange, digital color speci#cation standards, and managing digital are but a few of the important technical issues to understand as the graphic communication industry transitions into the digital world.
