Cycling in London vs. Europe

The level of cycling in London is low

compared to other European cities

Amsterdam – 28%

Copenhagen – 20%

Munich – 12%

Berlin – 5%

Key Stats

Currently 450,000 cycle trips a day. Saw

a dramatic spike after 7/7 terrorist

attacks, then normalised at higher level.

Cycle trips up 87% since 2001

Casualty rates down 50% (from ’00 levels with a

slight up-turn in serious or killed: 2003 ~ 2006 Crash Stats: 7752,

Slight, 1115 Serious, 46 Fatal) speeds up in CCZ

Target - 80% increase by 2010 achieved!

New Target - 200% increase by 2020

Role of Borough - Design and implement facilities to

complete the LCN+ on the borough road network
