Saint Andrew Kim Taegon generally referred to as Saint Andrew Kim Taegon in English, was the first Korean-born Catholic priest and is the patron saint of Korea, being canonized and made a Saint with 120+ others on 6th May, 1984. In the late 18th cen-tury, Roman Catholicism began to take root slowly in Korea and was introduced by scholars who vis-ited China and brought back Western books trans-lated into Chinese. In 1836 Korea saw its first conse-crated missionaries arrive, only to find out that the people there were already practicing Korean Catho-lics.

Matthew the Apostle was, according to the Christian Bible, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and, according to Christian tradition, one of the four Evangelists.

Pope Cornelius was the Bishop of Rome. He was pope during and following a period of persecution of the church and a schism oc-curred over how repentant church members who had practiced pagan sacrifices to pro-tect themselves could be readmitted to the church.

SOCIAL ACTION

We are so proud of our parishioners who gave so generously this summer to the backpack collection and the summer blood drive. 209 backpacks were collected and 57 donors came to give blood. 9 were deferred and 44 donated whole bloods and 4 people donated double red cell units on the ALYNX machines (each counts as 2) for a total of 52 units. Our thanks to Jayan Joseph for coordinating the blood drive, Charlie Samoylo and Ellen Rice-Samoylo for coordi-nation the backpack collection. Ann Marie Kaczorowski who is the coordinator of the social action committee and Parish Council President.

Good Counsel Homes

In the gospel of Mathew Jesus calls a little child to him and proclaims “… whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me” (Mathew 18:5). Debbie DuHaime from Good Counsel Homes will be speaking at Mass during the weekend of September 21-22. Good Counsel Homes is a mission helping homeless pregnant and parenting mothers and babies. Good Counsel operates 5 Catholic homes for pregnant women and their children as well as a national toll-free crisis pregnancy help line (800-723-8331). There will be a collection for monetary donations, that will help assist with their lifesaving work. We welcome you with an open heart to learn more about what we, the Catholic community, can do to help homeless mothers and babies in need through crisis to careers. Please consider becoming a monthly do-nor, also visit www.GoodCounselHomes.org or LIKE Good Counsel Homes on Facebook. The more you know, the more mothers and babies will be helped.

LIKE TO SING? THE CHOIR WANTS YOU!

Like to sing? If you can carry a tune and can rehearse on Thursday nights, Dr. Jim Blanton, our new Music Director, invites YOU to join our choir. Whether you’ve never had music lessons or choir experience, or don’t feel you have a solo voice, we can teach you what you need to learn to be a valuable member of our 20 voice choir. We are a diverse group of singers who work hard yet have great fun during rehearsal, and contribute beauty and meaning to the weekly 10:30 Mass. There are choir parties and social gatherings being planned, so don’t miss out. See Dr. Jim after any Mass, or call 845-662-1453 to find out more!

ADULT FAITH FORMATION MOVIE NIGHT WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2019

Please join us in the Parish Center at 7 PM for a very meaningful presentation on the pro-choice/ pro-life debate. The film UNPLANNED tells the story of Abby Johnson, a Planned Parenthood director, and her journey through this debate. Very graphic scenes in this movie ex-plain the awakening Ms. Johnson had to proceed from being a pro-choice advocate to a pro-life advocate.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Are you reading this bulletin announcement because you are interested in the Catholic Faith or are you looking to complete your Sacraments of Eucharist

(Communion) and Confirmation? If so, you are reading the correct announce-ment. At St. Augustine’s, we have an ongoing program of faith formation. I want to emphasize that RCIA is not a traditional CCD (old name) Religious Ed. Program. Candidates generally need either all three Sacraments of Initiation or having been baptized have not continued toward first Holy Communion and/or Confirmation. Please contact Deacon Jim Suchy at 634-3641, the Parish Office

number, or email him at [email protected] and include the letters RCIA in the subject space.
