    SECTION B SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS (40 marks) Answer ALL questions (Use Answer Book) Question 1 (25 marks) Ms. Low, a 25-year-old lady, has lost 10 kg in the past two months. Over the past two months she has complained of continued emotional irritability and bowel problems alternately suffering from diarrhoea or constipation. She was diagnosed with hyperthyroid disease and was admitted to the ward for a subtotal thyroidectomy. On return to the ward from the operating theatre she is nil by mouth and has Intravenous therapy in situ. (a) Describe the pathophysiology of the clinical manifestations described above.

    (3 marks) (b) Identify two (2) complications of intravenous therapy. Explain how you will

    assess these complications. (4 marks) (c) Briefly discuss four (4) nursing interventions in relation to Ms. Lows

    intravenous therapy. (4 marks) (d) Briefly explain two (2) specific complications of a subtotal thyroidectomy.

    (2 marks) (e) Describe the specific post-operative nursing management of a patient post

    subtotal thyroidectomy. (4 marks) (f) Outline a discharge plan for Ms. Low. (8 marks) Question 2 (15 marks) Mr. Poh, a 35-year-old salesman with Type 1 diabetes, is admitted to the hospital and reports that he is feeling hungry, shaky, and weak. His daily dose of insulin has been Insulatard 14 units and NovoRapid 10 units each morning. His family told the nurse Mr. Poh forgot to eat breakfast after taking insulin this morning. His blood glucose level is 2 mmol/ L. On assessment, the nurse also finds an unhealed wound 2X2 cm on his right toe that is red and inflamed. (a) Briefly describe the condition Mr. Poh is experiencing, identify the factors that

    contributed to his condition and how these could have been prevented. (5 marks)

    (b) Outline five (5) nursing interventions you will provide to Mr. Poh. (5 marks)

    (c) Explain the essential components in diabetic foot care education. (5 marks)
