John 1:14-18 NIV

• The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. (15) John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.'" (16) From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. (17) For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. (18) No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known.

Page 33: 080106 The One And Only John 1 1 18 Dale Wells

The Word became flesh and lived among men

• Abrupt change of pronouns in John 1:14– Everything before is 3rd person – He, him, they

– Now it becomes 1st person – We, us

• John 1:14 NIV The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Page 34: 080106 The One And Only John 1 1 18 Dale Wells

We beheld his glory• Reminiscent of the tabernacle

– Exodus 40:33-34 NIV Then Moses set up the courtyard around the tabernacle and altar and put up the curtain at the entrance to the courtyard. And so Moses finished the work. (34) Then the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.

• Seen on the mount of transfiguration– Luke 9:29-32 NIV As he was praying, the appearance of

his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. (30) Two men, Moses and Elijah, (31) appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. (32) Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him.

Page 35: 080106 The One And Only John 1 1 18 Dale Wells

We beheld his glory• 2 Peter 1:16-18 NIV We … were eyewitnesses of

his majesty. (17) For he received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased." (18) We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.

• The glory of Jesus is the glory of God

Page 36: 080106 The One And Only John 1 1 18 Dale Wells

We received his grace

• He has given us what we could never deserve – but what we desperately needed – mercy, forgiveness, and acceptance, and blessings

Page 37: 080106 The One And Only John 1 1 18 Dale Wells

We see God in him

• John 1:18 NIV No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known.

• Jesus manifested God as no one had before!– John 14:9 NIV Jesus answered: "Don't you know me,

Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'?

– John 17:6 NIV "I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word.

– John 17:24 NIV "Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.

Page 38: 080106 The One And Only John 1 1 18 Dale Wells

We see God in him

• Colossians 1:15 NIV He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.

• Hebrews 1:1-4 NIV In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, (2) but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. (3) The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. (4) So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.

Page 39: 080106 The One And Only John 1 1 18 Dale Wells

As we gaze on his glory, we become like him

• 2 Corinthians 3:18 NRSV And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit.

Page 40: 080106 The One And Only John 1 1 18 Dale Wells

When Christ comes, we will be glorified together with Him!

• 2 Thessalonians 1:11-12 NIV With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may count you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may fulfill every good purpose of yours and every act prompted by your faith. (12) We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

• Jude 1:24-25 NIV To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy-- (25) to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.
