1950

Maybe the white faced people arent as bad as they appeared to be! They built a big

building where we can take the sick. Not just that, but they have gone to our childrens

school and taught them new things, I want my children to have whats best for them,

better then what I had and maybe the white faces can give that to them.We have

even made more money, but we cannot have a bigger house because of the crowded

area that we are in, there is no room to run around. It is just a lot of houses that are

squeezed together. We have made more money because the white people are trading

now with other countries which are why my husband is being paid more but we have

to use a lot of that for our taxes, we have to pay for every person who lives in my

house and we are living day by day. There is only enough money to buy the food for

the day.

They have even forced rival tribes together and caused even more arguing and fighting,

but the white faces put an end to that before it really had a chance to start. There is

still a lot of tension around us, whenever I leave my house people from the other tribe

glare at me and I take caution but we are all too scared to do anything about our

hatred for each other. The white people are also taking all our resources; we are left

with nothing for ourselves unless we buy it and we cannot afford a lot of it.

January 5th 1955My husband left to help the Mau Mau rebels fight the white faced people. I am scared

he will not return, the white faces have already slaughtered so many of the rebels, we

have done damage but it is not enough to get rid of them. I know people who have

been killed, they gave their life trying to make other people's better. They were one of

the many who have been killed, I hope this ends soon. As much as I want to gain

independence, I still don't want to waste lives. I feel like we will fail soon anyways, we

have lost more people than the white people have.

They are already taking more and more people from my tribe, the Kikuyu. They are

using the laborers to recruit more people with darker skin like us to build a railroad. I

do not know why they always make people who look like us as there slaves/servants,people like us are always the ones who are chosen to do the hard labor. I hope they

are done soon and maybe everyone who had to go will come back.

At night, I have nightmares that I was the one of the people who was shipped away.

They had come with much superior weaponry, they were long and round. When they

used them it made the loudest sound. We had no chance against them. Some of my

closest friends were the ones that were shipped away; there kids were shipped along

with them and many families were broken up. I hope mine wont be.

December 19th 1956

The Mau Mau rebellion has failed but the white faces have promised our freedom! I

think they have lost confidence in their leadership. We will soon have our freedom

back.We will get to leave the over-crowded area that we live in know and we will

hopefully get our house back, if not that one then maybe a bigger one! My family and I

might be able to be able to afford more after all these years that they were here!

Later On

My husband has just come home but he is badly injured and he has lost a lot of blood.

I had run to the hospital and I had begged one of the doctors for medicine, but he was

clearly one of the people who werent happy that they were leaving Kenya so he

refused to give me medicine and he had slapped me away. I had run home as fast as I

could in fear that he might do worse than slap me.When I got home my husband

looked even worse, he was sweating and his face was a sickly white. I worry that he

will not last much longer.

December 22nd 1956

My husband has passed away. He had died while he slept, the most peaceful way of

dying. I had not noticed before but he had lots of scars on his back, he must have been

whipped but he had not told me. He was barely speaking when he came back. He

might have died peacefully, but he has died when we were finally promised freedom.

November 2nd 1963When I wrote my last diary entry I did not know that we would have to wait so long for

our freedom; but at last its finally here! The white people have finally left! I never

would have thought it while they were here but they made my country a better place

to live in. They have left us there knowledge. We have the hospital, the railroad, a new

system of government and they even spread their language; English. Everyone now

speaks it but I worry that people will soon forget our language and culture and use

only theirs instead.

After they left we began immediately having fights and arguments with our rival tribe.

When they were still here, if we got into a fight they would immediately stop it and

punish whoever had been fighting. I do not agree with their form of punishment which

is brutal and violent but at least they stopped it! There are more and more outbreaksof violence between the two tribes and Im sure this is happening elsewhere too. I

know this rivalry will not end soon; we have been fighting for too long. I find it stupid

to go from one war straight to another one. The white people didnt think about this

before they left, this will last a long time but so will all the good things they left behind.
