StaffDeputy PrincipalThe deputy principal, Ms Kendall Hammond, manages the Intensive English program at Nollamara Primary and can be contacted on 08 9349 1266 or Kendall.Hammond @education.wa.edu.au

TeachersStaff that teach in the Intensive English program are highly qualified and have a Diploma or Bachelor of Education as well as additional qualifications to teach English as an Additional Language/Dialect (EAL/D) students.

Ethnic Education AssistantsThe school has many ethnic education assistants (EEAs) who come from diverse backgrounds and speak a variety of languages. These assistants work with teachers in the teaching and learning program and also translate and interpret when required. They are also able to translate concepts from the children’s first language into English to assist them to access the curriculum. Some of the language groups include Arabic, Burmese, Karen and Farsi.

School PsychologistMrs Anne Stephens, our school psychologist works collaboratively with staff to address the specific academic, social and emotional needs of students identified as being at risk. The school psychologist is also available to provide advice to parents regarding the academic, social and emotional development of students. Interpreters are used to support parents in these meetings when necessary.

Special programsStudents in the Intensive English program have access to the following specialist programs:

IntegrationThe Intensive English program is integrated into the school. Classes join in with mainstream students in a range of activities including assemblies, swimming lessons, sporting events, interschool sport carnivals and for those students who qualify for the specialist guitar program and choir. All students have the opportunity to participate in enriched learning programs at Nollamara Primary.

Class structureStudents are placed in age appropriate classes and consideration is given to prior educational background. Within each year level there are two phases: Phase 1 and Phase 2.

The student’s level of English language proficiency at the time of enrolment in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening determines which phase a student will be placed in as well as previous schooling information.

Phase 1 class: This class provides intensive English support for newly arrived students with limited or no English language skills in the very early stages of learning English. Students born in Australia and entering school for the first time with limited or no English may also enrol in the junior Phase 1 class. Students usually complete six months in a Phase 1 class, but this time can vary depending on language and learning needs of the individual child.

The teacher focuses mainly on the development of oral and early written language skills across the curriculum and related literacy skills. Students are introduced to the Australian culture, the new environment and routines of the school. Students will experience new ways of learning and develop the appropriate oral and written language skills to assist them when socialising with peers. The Western Australian Curriculum is used to teach the language and key concepts in learning areas including Maths, Science, HASS, Health and other subjects in this phase.

Phase 2 class: This class provides an intensive English program for students who have developed sufficient oral and written language skills to effectively communicate in English. The Western Australian Curriculum is used to teach key learning areas including Maths, Science, History, Geography, Health and other subjects, preparing students for their transition into mainstream schooling.

Assessment and reportingStudents in the Intensive English program are formally reported on every six months from the time of their enrolment at the school. Parent interviews are held during reporting time and when students exit the program. Parents can make an appointment at any time for an interview with their child’s classroom teacher. Interpreters are available to support these meetings.

Nollamara Primary has parent information evenings at the beginning of the year where class teachers provide information about the teaching and learning program and classroom procedures.

The EAL/D Progress Map is the monitoring, assessing and reporting tool used by the EAL/D teachers in the Intensive English program. Levels are given based of the language acquisition of students and grades are not used while students are in the programs.

Students are supported to transition to their local school when they have completed their time in the Intensive English program and student progress files and reports are passed on to the local school.
