Director General of Turkish State Railways (TCDD) UIC Vice Chairman

Chairman of UIC Regional Assembly for Middle-East

Jean-Pierre LOUBINOUXDirector General, International Union of Railways (UIC)

In 2009, the Turkish State Railways (TCDD) operated the first High Speed Line between Ankara and Eskişehir. It was the first High Speed Line in the Middle-East region. Since then, new High Speed lines have been operated in Turkey, such as Ankara-Konya in 2011 or Ankara-Istanbul in 2014. With several other lines under construction or in project, Turkey is now a full member of the High Speed rail community.

Other ambitious projects for high speed links are also being developed in several countries of the Middle-East. Worldwide, 34,000 km of high speed lines are currently in operation, and more than 15 billion passengers have already been carried by high speed trains at global level – twice the world’s population.

It is our greatest honour and pleasure to announce that the next UIC World Congress on High Speed Rail, the largest international congress and exhibition devoted to High Speed Rail in the world, will be held in May 2018 in Ankara.

The Congress was initiated by the International Union of Railways (UIC) in 1992. Twenty-five years later, this 10th edition will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for all High Speed Rail professionals including decision makers, authorities, railway industry, railway undertakings, infrastructure managers, research institutes, universities and others to envision the future worldwide.

We are convinced that the 10th edition of UIC World Congress on High Speed Rail in Ankara will meet all expectations and confirm its vocation as a unique platform at world level to benchmark and exchange on all issues and challenges connected with high speed rail transportation and its benefits for market and society.

We sincerely look forward to welcoming you in Ankara in May 2018.

Message from International Union of

Railways

The UIC High Speed Rail world congresses provide every 2 or 3 years a unique opportunity to exchange information and best practices on all aspects related to the development of competitive, sustainable and efficient high performance passenger transportation systems.

The congress gathers all actors and stakeholders of these developments, including governments, international organisations, non-governmental organisations and financial institutions, railways and their suppliers, research bodies and universities, and all partners cooperating at different degrees with the railway developers. The 10th World congress in 2018 should put a strong focus on new opportunities opened up by the digital revolution for sustainable operations and increased synergies between the rail sector and universities as well as the research world including start-up, on intramodal connections and multimodality, ...

The High Speed Rail congress that is taking place for the first time in Turkey will provide a unique overview of latest developments in the field of high speed rail and more generally rail transportation in this particularly dynamic region at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and the Middle-East.

Jean-Pierre LOUBINOUXUIC Director General

As TCDD, we are very pleased and honored to host the 10th UIC World Congress on High Speed Rail (HIGHSPEED 2018) to be held in Ankara on 8-11 May 2018.

Following Japan, South Korea, China and some western European countries, we are proud of practicing high-speed railway system in Turkey as the bridge between Europe, Asia and the Middle East, since 2009. As Turkey, one of our basic principles is to take the high speed railway system further each passing day. Based on this principle, we aim to increase our existing 1,213 km high speed railway network to 12,915 km until 2023 -the 100th Anniversary of our Republic- with the realization of 2,116 km high speed line and 9,586 km rapid line under construction, survey and design phase.

It is obvious that quite important high-speed railway projects have been started in Middle East, Central Asia and African countries as well as Turkey. HIGHSPEED 2018 will be held in such a region for the first time, with the theme "Sharing Knowledge for Sustainable and Competitive Operations".

Within the scope of the Congress to be held with the presence of H.E. Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications; parallel sessions, roundtable meetings, technical visits and competitions will be made with the engagement of around 150 speakers from more than 20 countries. The latest technological developments and innovations will be shown at the trade exhibition to be organized within the scope of the Congress with the participation of many worldwide-known companies.

With the worldwide stakeholders and actors in the field of high speed rail, we would like to meet you in Ankara on 8-11 May 2018.
