Warehousing in india: An Industry PersPectIve
The Indian transportation and logistics market has sparked the need of newer technology adoption, network optimiza-tion, multimodal transportation and improving warehous-ing. The latter in particular is in the process of evolving rapidly from ‘godowns’ to modern facilities. It accounts for about 20% of the Indian logistics market and is expected to grow at a rate of 35 to 40% annually, displaying high potential for growth over the next few years.
From a mere combination of transportation and storage services, logistics is fast emerging as a strategic func-tion that involves end-to-end value-added solutions that improve efficiencies in the supply chain. Increasingly, warehouses are being used to serve several important functions, beyond mere storage of products, requiring warehouse service providers to expand their scope to include more sophisticated services.
