TV-channel and time of broadcasting significantly influence TV viewing of matches

Broadcasts structure of Euro saw two significant changes in 2016, compared to previous years, that had notable impact on broadcasts average rating (TVR) and total reach :
Match TV joined the broadcasters pool. The new TV channel delivers lower TVRs and reaches less viewers compared to top Russian channels – Pervy Kanal and Rossiya 1 – both in and out of the prime time. In addition, new early broadcast time with matches starting at 15.30 – 16.00 appeared. These factors lowered the average TVR and total reach of the championship.

National Team’s performance directly influences viewership

Reach of Euro broadcasts remains high, over 70% in 2016. Average TVR of all championship broadcasts has decreased because almost half of broadcasts were allocated on Match TV. As
results of 2008 show, National Team’s performance directly influences viewership.
Cumulative reach and average TVR of group stage broadcasts saw a decline because Match
TV dominated among the broadcasters with 63% of matches. Average TVR of broadcasts
on the other two channels – Pervy and Rossiya 1 - is 4.27
Attention to TV broadcasts of the playoffs is directly influenced by the Russian National
team’s ability to reach this stage. New system of playoffs in 2016, starting with 1/8,
contributed to the increase of the total reach of TV broadcasts.

Attendance to matches is high and grows tournament-to-tournament

Attendance to the matches of the UEFA European Championships is high and increases
at each following tournament. In 2016 the growth was induced by the increased number
of matches (+20 matches in total) and larger capacity of the stadium (+73% to Ukraine &
Poland Euro 2012 stadiums capacity)
Average relative occupancy of the stadiums (% of capacity) also remains high – over 90%.
Increase in occupancy at playoffs at Euro 2016 was caused by the French national team’s
success in the playoffs and playing in the final, while at previous tournaments the hosts’
national teams have not been playing in the final match.
