SCC ON TOP OF EVERESTBy Grant “Axe” Rawlinson

In April and May 2011 I made an attempt to fulfil a lifelong dream by climbing the North Ridge of Everest located in Tibet. The traditional route on Everest is from the South side of the mountain located in Nepal. This has seen serious problems with over crowding, especially this year, hence I opted for a less popular route. The North Ridge is colder and windier, has a lower success rate and a higher death toll than the South side, however I felt it was a better option for me due to the fewer people on the route.

I had a hard expedition in 2011 where I developed High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (H.A.P.E), tooth abscesses and food poisoning before recovering enough to make a summit attempt late in the climbing season. The calm weather we so desperately required for our summit attempt did not come however and I turned back at 8350m, 500m below the summit of the world with freezing hands in horrific winds.

It took me a few months to get over the expedition and the failure when I got home. I had put so much time, effort and money into following my dream that it was very hard not to feel depressed. I thought long and hard if I really wanted to go back and try and again. What if I failed again? How would I handle that?

After a great deal of thought I finally made the decision to return to Everest. In April and May I returned to Tibet and began the long process of acclimatising my body slowly to the higher altitudes. After 5 weeks on the mountain we were finally acclimatised and had our camps stocked with oxygen and other supplies. We were ready to make a push for the summit. We just

needed that lucky break with the weather, as the weather plays such a key part of climbing Everest. There is only a very few days of the year when the jet stream winds move off the mountain for a day or two and allow climbers to sneak up to the summit and back down again safely.

We studied the weather forecast for days and finally spotted a possible summit window around the 19 May. After a hard four days solid climbing all the way from base camp up to Camp 3, the highest campsite in the world at 8300m, we were in position to make a push for the summit.I rested in the tent breathing oxygen all afternoon until 11:30pm that night when I left together with Pasang Nima Sherpa and we began our climb along the infamous North East Ridge to the summit of the world. The North East Ridge is the highest ridge traverse in the world. It is considered as one the great feats of human endurance to successfully negotiate the ridge.

Wearing a full down suit, triple insulated overboots, crampons, oxygen mask and bottle and three layers of gloves, I felt clumsy as I carefully picked my way along the ridge in the freezing night

THE PADANG | July/August 2012

by the light of my torch. The exposure is tremendous, if you make a mistake here and take a fall you will go all the way 3000m down to the Rongbuk Glacier far below you. I passed the bodies of six dead climbers as I slowly worked my way higher up the mountain. At 7:10am (Nepal time) I finally took the remaining few steps to the summit of the world. It was with immense relief that I put my pack down and took out my sponsors JOHN FOORD and UFIT’s Flag to take a photo. To know I had finally repaid their faith and trust in me was hugely rewarding.

Getting to the top of any mountain is only halfway. 80% of the accidents occur on the descent as climbers get exhausted, run out of oxygen and begin to make mistakes. I was very careful on the way down. Unfortunately that day two other climbers on the North Ridge were not so lucky. One ran out of oxygen, and one fell and broke his leg. They both passed away. The North East Ridge is so exposed and steep that it is impossible for any person to help another down who is incapacitated. It was a grim reminder of what happens if you make a mistake.

I finally made it back to our high camp at 12:00pm then over the next 3 days all the way back to base camp.

My climb was in support of the Taranaki Rescue Helicopter Trust, an organisation that saved my sisters’ life after a horrific car accident in February in New Zealand. For a donation to this charity I give speaking and slide show presentations on my Everest experiences and the lessons I have learned along the way. Please contact me on [email protected] to arrange.

Dear Members,

It has been two months since I assumed the role of President of the Club. In these two months, the General Committee has been tasked with many ongoing issues. I am delighted to see the GC and the Management working in tandem to derive the best way forward for the Club.

Every issue raised was deliberated initially by the Subcommittee concerned, well thought through by the GC with all costs and benefits duly considered before finalizing on a decision that is in the best interest of the Club.

Having said that, although we are a Members’ Club, a gentleman’s Club, may I take this opportunity to remind all that Members are expected to maintain a decorum befitting a Premier Sports and Social Club like us. I would urge all Members to refer to our Rules and bye-laws, which are readily available on the website at www.scc.org.sg on the fundamentals.

For the same reason, we have set a designated waiting area for Members’ drivers while in our car park premise. As the car park attendant’s area is right at the main entry point to the Club, Members’ drivers are hereby requested to relocate to the designated waiting area so as not to interfere with the car park attendant’s job.

Many companies move boxes. We move families.

It’s all a matter of perception. Where most companies see trucks and boxes, we see people and their prized possessions. Last year alone we moved 20,000 families all over the globe.

And with 3,500 employees internationally, 1.3 million square feet of warehousing and more than 800 vehicles, we have the resources to provide the most personal service in the business.

THE PERANAKAN AFFAIRLADIES LUNCHEON WITH BIBIK GT LYESATURDAy, 26 MAy 2012

Our refined SCC ladies and guests, elegantly donning their finest kebayas, enjoyed a cultural Saturday lunch accompanied with a wide array of Peranakan-inspired cuisine. Members and guests were pampered with a complimentary beauty treat from lark, The Spa Atelier and an exclusive studio experience worth $350 from Essence Studios.

During the exquisite buffet spread, Peranakan Theatre Doyenne, bibik GT lye enlightened the event with the history and culture of the Sarong kebaya. Members and guests also engaged in the demonstration of proper sarong-tying technique.

Much to the delight of our ladies and guests, Rumah bebe, a Peranakan Heritage boutique also specially brought in an array of handmade beaded Peranakan slippers, selected purses and embroidered kebayas for display and sale.

At the end of the talk, one of our lucky guests walked away with a pair of tickets to a one-day concert with guitar legend, John Ambercombie. It was indeed a delightful and pleasant afternoon filled with joyous laughers, especially with the wits of bibik GT lye!

After the 2011 football season came to a close, it also marked the end of the wonderful captaincy of Aziz Mohamad. The reigns of the team were handed over to the vice-captain and in-coming Captain, Tahlil khan in an elaborate and plush setting commemorating our annual dinner and drinks. In true 3rds style, it was marked with a handing and taking over ceremony with the new captain appointing Aman bajaj as his vice captain, for a two year term.

The 2011 season ended on a high, as awards were handed out to the season’s best performers, which included best attendance, won by none other than Poh kay leong, an MvP award aka golden boot (there actually was a golden boot awarded) for the highest number of goals scored, which was awarded to, Aman bajaj. The dream team, where eleven players were selected based on their performance that season were also announced, to hopefully inspire them to keep up the good work and for the other players to strive to reach this pinnacle for the upcoming season.

The new captaincy marked a fresh beginning and also new kit, kindly sponsored by ben khoo of Silk Express. It also marked the return of several “legendary” players who had been unable to play often previously due to their work commitments and “persistent injuries”, and the introduction of several new players to the 3rds’ fold.

Trevor “Phantom/Hantu” Walker, was one player returning after a hiatus of almost six years. Trevor, known more for his off pitch contributions began his season with a warm up before a game at Dempsey which resulted in an “injury” that will keep him out for the rest of the season.

The 3rds also want to welcome back, Craig “leftie” Heggie, after being persistently sidelined with injuries, nothing serious and nothing football related and which involved a pair of Converse

shoes in one incident. Craig will clearly be an added boost to the 3rds defence in the current season which is underway.

The current additions to the 3rds line up are Clifford Theseira, Tan kim leng, Ravindran, and Ashish Manchharam. So far they have made significant contributions on and off the field and are a welcome addition, bringing with them a different dimension to the 3rds.

Clifford, according to empirical research, historical books /sources and having been born in the year that Pakistan and India were separated, is one of the “oldest rookies” to the 3rds. Go figure.

The 2012 football season got off to a slow start due to the “piece meal ageing ” of the team, as there were players recovering from old injuries and having to burn off the added weight from the year-end festivities of 2011. Despite the slow start to the season, the 3rds have made rapid progress as more and more players were getting back to match fitness after the year-end holidays. To date, the 3rds have won 7 games, drawn 4 and have lost a few games only by the odd goal

The new season also marked the introduction of the “black label Trophy”, thanks to our very own Rodd Harrison for his brilliant vision and wicked sense of humour. The trophy is awarded to the player or players with the most “blinding” performance in the game and has the honour of donating a bottle of black label after every game. This is not to be mistaken with the “Man of the Match” who is named for best performance and effort on the field.

The Thirds have also gone hi tech by embarking on a tracking system to monitor players’ statistics namely, the number of games played, number

of goals scored, most “Man of the Match”, most times being awarded the “black label Trophy”, and most number of assists just to name a few.

One surprising result of the tracking system, is that, at the time of the writing of this article, Murali, is currently leading the pack as top scorer, much to everyone’s surprise. Not surprisingly, he also holds the dubious honour of having been awarded the “black label Trophy” the most number of times.

Joseph Sagaram, our trusted keeper and Rohit “Rock” Hemnani are currently tied with having been named “Man of the Match” the most number of times.. The next closest contender is Poh kay leong.

Joseph has, since the beginning of the season, been the Thirds first choice keeper. However, his position is currently under serious threat from lavin “can play anywhere” vaswani who has, while Joe was recovering from injury, been performing brilliantly as the stand in substitute keeper.

Even our 2010 MvP, John keh, confessed midway through the current season that he is threatened by the new additions to the team and returning players that he has offered his services to play as left midfielder/winger, a marked departure from his normal defensive position.

The Thirds, in support of the Chairman of the Soccer Sixes, will be entering a team for the 2012 SCC Soccer Sixes which will be held in June. A stringent selection process has started, so as to field the best possible team for the tourney. In true Thirds fashion, the entire team will be out in full force to give support to our team and enjoy the tournament at the same time.

The year has already been a blast and will continue to be the case as several new teams have been added to the line-up of teams that are hosted annually. In addition to these teams, the year will be one where the theme is “Going Places”, new destinations, and new tournaments to add to the variety of the tour schedule.

The 3rds undertook their first tour this year to Jakarta, where the team played in the soon to be demolished, lebak bulus Stadium. The Thirds pulled off a dramatic 2-0 win in the second half with Tahlil khan scoring one and the other by Hamidul Haq in later stages of the game. It is sad that the lebak bulus Stadium will be demolished to make way for an MRT station, but it was indeed

an honour that the Thirds got to play one of the last few games there before its scheduled demise.

An addition to the 3rds annual games is one with the victoria Old boys from kuala lumpur, which our boys are eagerly looking forward to and in return we shall be hosting them later this year at the Padang.

Annual games are scheduled with teams with close ties with the 3rds and include some very prominent local companies and several multinational law firms like Rajah & Tann, RHT law Taylor Wessing, Fish & Co, kawan Creative, Alco, Infantron and M & A law Corporation.

Team Captain, Tahlil khan, with the full support of the team, created a new post of Tour Scout Manager and appointed Adrian Tow and Poh kay leong to scout new locations for tours in the future. So far there have been many recommended destinations, some of which have been rejected and others have been taken into consideration and are currently under “judicial review” before any concrete decisions are made. One tournament that the Thirds are hoping to compete in is the 2013 Nomads Six-a-side.

On a more serious note, congratulations are in order to lavin vaswani, whose wife gave birth to twins – a boy and a girl.

Here’s to a great season and year and after game fellowship.

DARTS INTER-SECTION TOURNAMENT | SATURDAy, 26 MAy 2012

Article by: balbir Singh Sidhu (Darts Convenor)

The Annual Inter-Section bull’s Eye Trophy Darts Tournament was held on 19 May 2012 at 3.00pm at The Oval. It was very heartening to see nearly all Sports Sections and GC represented at this event (with the understandable late withdrawal from the Netball and Cricket Sections, with the billiards & Snooker Section’s best efforts to form a team unfortunately not yielding a positive result).

A total of 10 teams were present for an afternoon of darts and social bonding across the Club. Upon registration, each player was given welcome gifts of an engraved diffuser set and a jar of NZ honey to remember the occasion. Thanks to Mike Daryanani, Joyce Foster and Ananda kumar for the sponsorship of the NZ honey and to Manoo Dadlani for the diffuser set.

The tournament got underway once President Col (Retd) Gurcharan Singh, Ananda kumar (CGCb) and Ms Nat Foster busted the blue balloons on the darts board. blue was the favourite colour of the late ex-president len Foster who kindly donated the trophy.

The dart game of choice for the event was Half-IT. The first round was contested by all teams with the top six teams advancing to the second round where they were seeded into two groups. The top team in each group advanced to the final. During each round a number of singles and doubles matches were played. As the teams played their first and second round they were provided with snacks of pakora and sandwiches and enjoyed the special beverage promotions of beer, wine and cocktail.

The Golf and Tennis Sections won the respective groups and made their way into the final. After an interesting encounter with the outcome not settled until the very last throw, Tennis emerged Champions. Well done to the Tennis Section and it must be noted they made a superb effort to have a team for the event.

All teams were then hosted to a buffet dinner. Thanks to Rajan Menon and Pernod Ricard for their sponsorship of whisky and fine wines which were enjoyed during dinner. President Col (Retd) Gurcharan Singh presented the medals to both finalists and the bull’s Eye Trophy to the Tennis Section.

It was a truly wonderful occasion enjoyed by all with wonderful memories and it is hoped that as a result of such events that the next time we walk into the Club, there are just that many more familiar faces we can have a chat or a drink with. It simply adds to our personal experience of membership of this great Club. Many thanks to all Darts Section Members, all Sports Sections, GC, Sports Dept and F&b Dept who all supported this event with great enthusiasm.

Sharan is the big winner for the May balut Section Night

Article by: John Taylor | Convenor: Rolv Stokkmo

After taking the first and second places at the 31st Interport in November 2011, the Section continues on its victorious streak by securing first place at the kinabalu tournament held in March. At the first local league match of this season held at SRC on 16 May, we again emerged first place. At the point of writing, we are due to host the second round on 20 June. On the 14 July, SCC will be entertaining the SRC for the bi-annual Padang Shield. We have also accepted an invite to NUSS on 25 July for a triangular challenge match where IA is also taking part.

At the Section’s AGM in May, Rolv Stokkmo was elected Convenor as John Taylor was not eligible due to the three-year rule introduced and passed by the Club’s General Committee on 18 March 2010, stating that Convenors of Sections can only serve three consecutive terms in that office.

The new Committee consists of:

Convenor: Rolv StokkmoCaptain: Raj kumarTreasurer: lars berg Secretary: John TaylorCommittee Members: Renee balagopal

Sunita kapoorGursharan kaurMogens Andersen

The Convenor thanked the President Col (Retd) Gurcharan Singh (a Member of the Section), Deputy President Mr Anthony Michael Grice, Chairman Games Control board Mr Ananda kumar and the General Manager Mr Alan Jones for their kind attendance.

After the meeting the new Committee realised that Mogens Andersen had not been proposed and seconded. Not wishing to lose the tremendous help and advice Mogens had given the Section in the past as Secretary, he was approached to consider to be co-opted to the new Committee and he graciously accepted.

Initial invitations have been sent out to all balut Section Members for the 32nd Interport to be held at the kota kinabalu yacht Club in November. Initial replies are requested to be in by 12 June as by submitting nominations early, there will be a reduction in entrance fees. The Convenor requests a good response as kkyC are hosting on our behalf to coincide with their 60th anniversary.

The first recorded score of 169 by len Foster was in 1982. It has subsequently only been achieved twice since that time, by Rodney Huxham of SCC in 1984 and Simon Davies of the british Club bangkok in 2007. So len’s 169 is still one of the three highest scores ever recorded in over 30 years of balut (the impossible dream is a maximum of 183).

Congratulations to Ms Christine khong for solving the Sudoku puzzle in the May/June issue of the magazine.

Our Section Nights are still very popular with 28 players attending in May. Deputy President Michael Grice attended that night and joined in the games. Apparently he enjoyed the intricacies of balut so much that he kindly signed up as a Section Member. After all, the possibility of obtaining a balut in one throw is only 7,776 to 1.

balut boxes, dice and mats are now on sale at the gift shop to all Club Members.

billiards & Snooker Section is proud to present a new Committee. During our recent AGM, Jason Tan is our new Convenor (for the first time). He will be assisted by the reliable and capable Captain, Mathew lim, Tan bak Choon, Secretary (who has been demoted from the Convenor’s post) and Mike yeomans who retained his Treasurer role. We are also glad that Joe yip and victor yeong had consented to help us run the Committee.

The new Convenor had turned down an invitation to address the evening but has promised that it will be an exciting year. The ex-Convenor then gave away the prizes to the tournament winners of 2011. In appreciation of the superb guidance and services of Stefanie Ang (Sports Executive), the ex-Convenor presented her with a memento.

Those who attended were then treated to wine and great food. Compliments to the Chef who roasted a whole lamb and those who attended had only praises for the Club.

During the month of May, we were pleasantly surprises with the visit of two members of the brisbane Tattersalls. both Jim Wicks and Mal Waygood were on their way to The Crucible to watch the Snooker World Tournament. The visit was filled with the usual great fellowship and some very friendly snooker games.

IN SEARCH OF THE PURSLOWE TROPHY 47th ANNUAL AUSTRALIAN TURF BOWLS CARNIVAL, SYDNEY (27 APR-5 MAY)Article by: Dr k U Menon | Convenor: George Abraham

In April 1788, in search of fertile farming land for the young colony, the First Governor of NSW, Arthur Phillip ventured up the river, 15 miles inland from Circular Quay, to establish what was to become the suburb of Parramatta.

Fast forward April 2012, in search of the elusive Purslowe Trophy, SCC’s finest – a motley crowd of 15 lawn bowlers ventured boldly across the Indian Ocean by air and coach to Parramatta – to wage battle at the annual carnival, hosted by City Tatts Sydney at the Rosehill bowling Club. Our bowlers practised for months, including sessions at the faster Green at Tanglin Club, intent on reclaiming the trophy which they last won in 2006.

but it was not to be. lawn bowls is a game that takes minutes to learn but a lifetime to master. With years of practice on faster Greens, the Aussie bowlers were not about to give in easily. The all-male bowling Clubs are today a fixture of the Australian landscape. And the underlying strength of these clubs, from the penumbral darkness of Australian history, is a culture of mateship so embedded in the psyche and evident in the kind of delightful greeting we encountered:

“Ow yer goin’ mate orright?”“Yeah mate. Ow yer goin’ orright?”“Orright mate.” (Reported by Australian humorist John O’Grady)

SCC’s bowlers dug in and put up a valiant fight under a blistering blue sky, winning three matches, beating Adelaide, Melbourne & Newcastle but lost six other matches in an overall tally of 10 clubs. This year, the difference in shots was reduced and the overall champion was brisbane with Perth in second place. Canberra will host the 2013 carnival in April.

IN MEMORY OF

BRIAN “HAMMER” HAMMONDOn the 16 May 2012, the Singapore Cricket Club lost one of its own when brian “Hammer” Hammond passed away. On that day, not only did the SCC lose a fierce competitor and a very proud Club-man, but the world lost a gentle giant who was loving, loyal and extremely generous with his time.

Hammer’s funeral was held on the 22 May 2012 at St. George’s Church where an honour guard of his SCC family walked him in and out of the Church. Hammer’s coffin was draped with sporting mementos from his sporting passions; his cricket bat, the Hawthorn Football Club and Australian scarfs. Rev Canon Philip Sinden led a beautiful service and members of Hammer’s family and friends spoke with passion and feeling about exactly what brian/Hammer/Dad/Uncle b meant to them.

In a fitting tribute, on behalf of Hammer’s Australian family, brian’s brother-in-law laurie Tilley, spoke about how brian came into the world on 5 April 1955, at Dandenong, victoria to loving parents brian Snr and Jean. brian lived “a life full of joy, love and unbridled enthusiasm”. We heard about how Hammer excelled both academically and in sporting terms at school – particularly in cricket and Australian Rules Football, where he played “footy” for the Hawthorn Football Club U19.

laurie also talked colourfully and with lovely stories about Hammer’s passion and infectious enthusiasm for everything he did and of his clear early leadership in business and in sports that became a hallmark of his later life at SCC.

We also heard about Hammer’s progression into the working world at Telecom in Australia, setting up family in victoria and eventually making the huge leap of faith to change direction and move to Malaysia in 1996.

During the service brian’s wife (Saktti), children (laura, Sophie, Emma, Thomas, Tara and Sonya) and close friends (Peter Doyle and Peter Salt) all spoke very eloquently and emotionally about what he had meant to each one at different times in their lives.

SCC Deputy President (Michael Grice) spoke on behalf of the Singapore Cricket Club, detailing Hammer’s many contributions across the varied sports at SCC, but in particular to the SCC Cricket.

From Mike we heard about how brian joined the Club in 1999 as an Associate Member eventually becoming a full Ordinary Non-Transferable Member in 2011. brian quickly established himself in the Cricket Section and played a good deal of cricket, eventually captaining the Cougars side in 2004 (the Club’s 3rd XI in those days) and became Convenor of the Section in 2005.

I served on his committee in 2005, and brian clearly led by example and was always open to doing things differently, with new ideas and building new teams. I also served on brian’s T20 committee where this passion and enthusiasm to get things done (and done properly) was equally strong seven years later!

While his tenure as Convenor was short-lived due to a return to Australia, Hammer and Saktti returned to Singapore in 2008 and threw themselves straight back into SCC – Saktti resurrecting a defunct Netball Section and Hammer throwing himself into Saturday XI cricket and eventually the Club’s signature international T20 tournament – of which he became Tournament Chairman in 2010.

In that role, and as a representative of SCC, Hammer made many friends around the cricketing world who have all sent messages of support after hearing the news of his passing.

Due in large part to Hammer’s hard work and leadership this year, the 2012 tournament promises to be an even bigger event than last year’s tournament and will be a fitting tribute to his memory.

Even before Hammer took on the mammoth task of almost reinventing this tournament after an enforced hiatus in 2010, brian’s love of the Club and all it stood for was self-evident. A constant at the Club, with a welcoming smile for all Members new and old and a strong sense of how things should work within our institution, Hammer quickly became a very popular Section and Club Member. It is a credit to his sense of “Club” that so many Members from other Sections paid tribute to Hammer by attending his funeral and the “Celebration of life” event at the SCC after the service at St.Georges.

While family members gathered at Mandai Crematorium to pay their final respects, the rest of the congregation returned to the Club for a “Celebration of life” event held at the Gilmour Room. It was not surprising to see so many friends gather to support Saktti and the family to reminisce about how Hammer had touched their lives. Although we were moved into Stumps after 6.00pm, friends and family were still at the SCC until the early hours, making sure we gave Hammer a very fitting send-off.

As Convenor of Cricket at SCC and on behalf of our Section, I want to thank the Club and all the Members of the other Sections for their very kind words and actions at this very difficult time. The outpouring of support that the Section has received from all has been amazing and it makes me very proud to be a Member of this fine institution, and I know Hammer would have been very touched too.

Michael Grice summed it up very well in church when he said, “We at the SCC will miss brian greatly as will the many cricket friends around the world who got to know him through his playing of the game, his time as Section Convenor and from the T20. Our Club will be the poorer for his passing and the Cricket Section has lost an outstanding Member.

A good man, with an infectious enthusiasm for the game.

God bless you Hammer.”

CRICKET BRINGING GLORY:CELEBRATING SCC’S 160TH BIRTHDAYArticle by: Push Sharma | Convenor: Ash Raivadera

It has been an exciting few months of cricket as SCC has hosted Interport games against reciprocal Clubs in a variety of different cricketing formats. In recent months we have hosted our old friends from the Royal bangkok Sports Club, kowloon Cricket Club and Penang Sports Club, always ensuring our guests are warmly welcomed on the field, in the bar and at dinner afterwards. In the coming months we will also welcome the Hong kong Cricket Club and the Royal Selangor Club for Interport fixtures and the various teams that will grace us with their presence for our upcoming International Club T20 in August.

In the league, our teams continue the pursuit of silverware while our juniors have already achieved this with a magnificent success in the inaugural SCA U16 league giving the SCC their first title of the year. Well done to Peter brooks and Arun vijayan (ably assisted by Alex Hambly) for creating a fun and competitive environment for the future cricketers of SCC.

May was also tinged with a great deal of sadness when the Section lost one of it’s favourite “sons” when brian “Hammer” Hammond passed away on 16 May. Our hearts and thoughts are with brian’s family and our gratitude goes to all the Club Members that have sent very kind words of support. brian was a very popular Section Member and his big smile will be sorely missed in our Section.

INTERPORT GAMES21 April saw our first Interport visit of 2012, with the Royal bangkok Sports Club coming to play on the Padang in a competitive fixture on the Saturday and a washed out game on Sunday. The SCC were triumphant on the field, however RbSC more than held their own in the bar following the game, while the social fixture was unplayable due to weather.

The weekend of 12 & 13 May 2012 saw the visit of kowloon Cricket Club to SCC, with a competitive 50 over game on Saturday and a social T20 on Sunday. In the competitive game, SCC posted a modest total of 125 all out (kevin Robertson 43). Despite the target, kCC were made to work hard for their runs, with the new ball pairing of youngsters kathik Suresh and Mohan D’Silva bowling well but unable to stem the flow of runs. Although wickets fell at fairly regular intervals it was too little too late and kCC limped to their target in the 38th over with six wickets down.

The evening dinner at the Gilmour Room was well-attended and the SCC President Col (Retd) Guru welcomed our very good friends from the kCC, whose performance in the bar equally matched their on-field skills – despite valiant efforts from SCC skipper Rob Hands and new boy Nick Taylor.

because of rain, the Sunday social game against kCC was reduced to 15 overs a side, with SCC fielding first. Despite our attempts to desprive the kCC tourists of sleep the night before, kCC were again up to the task scoring 135 in their alloted overs. karl Marret received Fielder of the Day for his stellar glovework in tough conditions – including a very sharp “eyes closed” one-handed snare. The highlight of SCC’s reply was James “Tuffers” kilbee’s two two magnificent maximums either side of the wicket in quick succession. SCC ended at 7–110, a good effort from SCC against a top grade kCC side.

Our old friends from the Penang Sports Club (PSC) came to the SCC over the weekend of the 25 & 26 May to play us in a competitive and social Interport fixture on The Padang. In the competitive fixture, tight bowlng from youngsters Mohan D’Souza, vishnu Mohan and Rias Hussien restricted PSC to 143 all out, while a composed innings from Riaz saw SCC canter home to a five wicket victory.

The evening dinner was again well-attended with Captain of Cricket Duncan Reynolds taking his responsibilities very seriously to ensure that he kept opposing social skipper Murali occupied until the wee hours at various establishments around town. Well done skip!

Spor

ts N

ews

The social T20 fixture was skippered by Andy beer who won the toss and bowled on a damp track. The game was memorable for Dave bennet’s celebratory fist pump after taking the first wicket, Peter Salt’s fine spell of aggressive slow medium bowling and the combined pairing of 110yrs+ of bowling talent with Salty and Stacey Muruthi delivering results. Penang posted 100 in their 20 overs and what should have been a straight forward run-chase on a drying ground soon turned to disaster with the SCC tumbling to 5/40. Ash Raivadera (48 no) however, steered SCC home with three balls to spare and two batsmen still in the shed.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES AND ANNOUNCEMENTSCongratulations to the following for getting on the honours board:

1. Nick Dorney for a maiden century on the Padang (150 in just 108 balls for Cougars against Marina CC), part of a 206 run partnership with James Muruthi who also scored an unbeaten 72.

2. Andre De lange’s 141 in his first innings of the season.3. Dene border’s batting average of over 70 (for March-May),

including 58 on his first outing for the SCC, followed by a 102 in 60 balls, 78 and 57.

4. ben king 100 in his first ever innings for the SCC.5. Colin Morris 91 not out in his first innings for the SCC.6. Rob Hands – 96 in partnership with Riaz Hussien who scored 94

not out7. vishal Rathee took 4-8 runs off 6 overs for the Panthers against

Marina CC.8. brigu Ayer – for being named bowler of the tournament in the

SCA U16 league.

Well done also to the five SCC junior academy players who have been selected to play for Singapore under 16s – Aalap Asurlekar, brigu Iyer, luke Hambly, Naren Narasimhan and Simar Miglani.

Congratulations also to Stacey Muruthi who was awarded with a signed bat from SCC to commemorate his 45th season playing league cricket in Singapore.

Congratulations to Tracy Jones who at the recent SCC Sports Awards was adjudged the winner of the one and only award given to an individual at our Club in recognition of services “Above and beyond”. Thoroughly deserved and a big thanks Tracy for all her effort, commitment and hard work.

Congratulations also go to Rufus Frere-Smith for finally tying the knot – well done Rufus, although a major fine for organising a wedding during the season and in particular the weekend of the Penang Sports Club Interport!

And finally, please remember to keep an eye out on the Cricket Section’s website (www.scccricket.com) and our Facebook group page for all the news of section events and fixtures. That is where you will also find bails – ably led by vips Aggarwal and Push Sharma. Thanks for your hard work guys.

Darts section organised its 2nd ladies’ Nite on the 12 April 2012 with the intent to promote more ladies to come on board to have fun, socialise and appreciate the game of darts. The event was indeed a great success and the turnout of the ladies was awesome! We had loads of fun, and laughter throughout the night.

The superstar who won for the ladies’ Nite was Ms Genevieve Chase from the Netball Section followed by Ms Joanna and another JSM from Netball Section, Ms Elaine Ng. Netball Section topped the night with the highest number of participants. The first prize was a Folie Folie watch and second and third prizes were digital cameras.

My heartfelt thanks to our dear sponsors Mr Sunder Ramchandani, Mr Manu bhojwani and Mr Rajan Menon for the bubbly champagnes. The ladies truly had a joyous time and the event would not have been a success without all the support from our generous sponsors.

The Darts Section Members too played an important role in providing all the support which required. Thanks to Ms Noni, Prem, Mike, balbir and Gavin. Special Thanks to our F&b staff, Mr kC & his team for providing exemplary service at this occasion.

Once again, thank you ladies for making this another successful ladies’ Darts Nite! Cheers...

SOCIAL GAME AT SICC AND ISCGT, 2ND LEGArticle by lim khoon | Convenor: lim khoon

Due to a scheduling conflict, Changi Golf Club had to unfortunately postpone our inter-club match with them that was scheduled for 21 April 2012. The match has now been postponed till 1 December 2012, so pen the date down in your diaries and look out for details nearer the date.

There was however just enough time for us to scramble and organise a replacement game at SICC, Old Course, on 9 May 2012. A total of 44 players signed up to play, which was surprisingly a good number given the lateness with which the game was organised.

Alas, although the weather was sweltering when we teed off, the rain came down hard after the first flights had just completed nine holes and did not relent until close to 5.00pm. And as the course could not re-open due to the water logged fairways, the game had to be called off.

Immediately, there was a scrambling of a different kind by some of the players, to make bookings for a relaxing massage at a nearby spa and to also kill time till dinner was served at 7.00pm. For the rest of us, we had to content ourselves with a dip in SICC’s hot pool and sauna.

INTER SOCIAL CLUBS GOLF TOURNAMENT 2012,2ND LEGThe 2nd leg of this year’s tournament was hosted by SCC at Seletar Country Club on 25 May 2012. To re-cap, the 1st leg at Raffles Country Club was won by Singapore Recreation Club with Singapore Swimming Club and ourselves trailing in

July/August 2012 | THE PADANG 33

second and third place respectively. For those still not in the know (where have you been?), this year’s tournament is the 3rd edition and four other social clubs in Singapore, namely Chinese Swimming Club, Changi beach Club, Tanglin Club and Serangoon Gardens Country Club, make up the complement of seven teams participating in the tournament.

The weather was perfect this time round, what with the sun hardly peeking through and a cool breeze blowing throughout the day. Seletar is one of the longer and tougher courses here in Singapore and unfortunately, the slow greens did not help matters. So, special mention must be made of our ex-convenor and captain, David yim, who came back with the best gross score of the day with a marvellous 76. Well done, David!

As for the tournament, history repeated itself and the same three teams that finished in the top three at the 1st leg finished in the same order in the 2nd leg. Congratulations are thus in order for SRC for having now won the 1st and 2nd legs. With only two legs remaining, it would be an uphill task to usurp them in the final standings but we will certainly give it our best shot.

UPCOMING EVENTSJuly will be a busy month indeed, with our Padang Shield match against SRC on 11 July at Sentosa Golf Club and our trip to kuala lumpur, in conjunction with our Interport match against kluang Country Club, scheduled for 27 to 29 July. More details will be forthcoming in the circulars which you should have received by the time you read this.

LADIES SECURE PREMIER LEAGUE TITLE FROM SRC IN EMPHATIC STYLEArticle by: Rosalind Spink | Convenor: Mathavan Devadas

1. SCC: Played 10, Points 26, Goal Difference 38.2. SRC: Played 10, Points 16, Goal Difference 1.

The ladies 1st XI faced off against SRC on 6 May in the knowledge that a win would secure the Premier league Championship, with two league matches remaining, for the first time in 16 years. The match was anything but a foregone conclusion with SCC having only managed a draw in the two previous meetings with our Padang rivals and defending league champions.

However, the demons of previous meetings and last year’s second place finish were soon put to bed and it was SCC that stamped their authority on the game this time. Two first half goals from Puteri yasmin and Roz Spink gave SCC a 2-0 lead at the interval.

At half time, Coach kanan Pakisramy was quick to remind the team that one SRC goal could change everything but it was SCC who scored the third goal through another short corner shot from Roz. At this stage SCC were firing on all cylinders, in contrast the SRC who seemed to be running on empty. Further goals from Puteri and Jess Tallent completed a comprehensive beating of our neighbours; 5-0 was the final score and there could be no finer way to win the title.

This achievement is testament not only to the dedication, hard work and talent of this group of players, but to the teamwork, cohesion and commitment of the Members of the Hockey Section as a whole. kanan joined SCC as the ladies’ coach in 2011 and since then has instigated marked improvements to the 2nd XI and U21 team as well as producing a championship winning 1st XI. kanan is ably assisted by Gary Fidelis whose tactical knowledge and match day insights have also been invaluable to all three teams.

A huge thanks must go to kanan and Gary for all their hard work this season, to the ladies of the 2nd XI for invaluable support during training and at matches, and also to all the supporters who definitely made their presence known at the SRC match.

Finally, the last word must go to the players of the 1st XI themselves, led by Captain Geer langezaal and vice Captain Zahrah Alhadad. The team were training twice a week and playing two matches a weekend more often than not during the height of the league season and thoroughly deserve to be champions!

130 NETBALLERS, FOUR TEAMS, ONE BIG PARTY & NAVY SHIPArticle by: Rachael bell | Convenor: Amber Williams

4 May saw the Padang Restaurant full of fun, laughter, food, booze as over 130 netballers from across various clubs in Singapore came together to celebrate the end of a successful 2012 SCC Netball Friendly Tournament. This is the first time the Netball Section has hosted such a large scale event and it proved to be such a success that requests are already in to repeat it next year! We were delighted with the attendance from the other clubs and it was a fantastic way for the Section Members to showcase the Club, network and raise our profile within the Singapore netball community.

During the evening, our MC for the night, convenor Amber Williams, was joined on stage by Ananda to present trophies to the winning teams. First place in Division 2 went to bedok Purple who narrowly beat the SCC Eagles (much to our disappointment). However spirits were lifted with the SCC Hawks drawing joint first position with NZCC in Div 1.

It was a great evening and there were a few sore heads the next morning. Planning is now underway for an even bigger and better event next year! A huge thank you goes to the SCC staff, Helen, Anna and everyone else who helped out, in particular, a big thanks to Rajan Menon from Pernod Ricard, our main sponsor who was a major factor in the event’s success.

There was no rest for the netballers the following day however as HMS ballarat were in town and had challenged us to a game of netball, followed by a joint social event with the Rugby Section. Thanks go to Annabelle for leading a somewhat subdued team onto court, keeping their energy and spirits up. After a couple

of games, it was upstairs to Stumps for a curry, a few drinks, good fun and netball’s first introduction to the game “1, 2, 3” (thank you the Rugby Section for that!). Great to welcome HMS ballarat back to the Club and we look forward to a rematch next year!

It has not been all social events however, back on the court, Netball Singapore’s Energiser league started at the end of the May. We have four teams playing, all of whom got off to a great start winning their first games – we are keeping our fingers crossed that this trend continues and hope to have good news next month. Our touring team, the Flamingos, recently returned from bangkok where they took part in the Southerners South East Asian Netball Invitational. Despite almost missing the plane, they played well in all their matches and even though they struggled to beat an impressive Hong kong Cricket Club team, who went on to win the overall tournament, they did walk away with one award – best fancy dress! Good work, girls and thanks to Gen for getting them there and back in one piece.

We now look forward to a busy summer of activity and being able to report good results from the Energiser league.

The section is always looking for new Members for inter-section sporting challenges and social events. So if you want to get involved or find out more then please email us at [email protected]

Happy Netballing!

MOURNING GROWLERS DEFEATED BY DURHAM CLEM PIRATES TOURING TEAM | Article by David GriffithsIn May, the Growlers under the dazzling lights of CCAb, entertained the Clem Pirates, a Uk touring side from County Durham. Sadly the rugby was not as dazzling and was rightly overshadowed by the passing of brian Hammond the day before. In memory of our good friend, an immaculately observed minute’s silence was conducted before the game. The match proved a tough battle with some ferocious forward exchanges.

The match proved a tough battle. The Pirates took the lead on five minutes with a penalty goal and extended the lead to 17-0 at half time with two converted tries from some impressive back play. After the break, the Growlers came back strong with a converted try by outside half David Griffiths. This resurgence was short lived and once again the Pirates stepped up a gear and ran out eventual winners, 39-7.

The superior youth and fitness of Pirates proved the key factor – very disappointing considering they had been on the lash for eight days in kl and Singapore! A great evening of beer and curry followed. Growlers – we have some considerable work to do on our fitness for the new season!

RIDING WITH THE GAUCHOS | Article by Andrew Douglas The SCC Rugby Section embarked on a tour of Argentina in April 2012 spending eight days in the country playing four matches in all, in buenos Aires and Mendoza. The first day was spent in recovery and a city tour where players visited the historical sites such as the main city square, the Presidential Palace, the main Cathedral, the Puerto Madera area and also the boca ghetto area where the famous boca Juniors soccer stadium is located.

1st Match: SCC vs. Club Les Regatas de Bella VistaOn Saturday 14 April, the SCC “Touring Team”, a Xv made up of mainly 1st Xv and Tankards players played the first match of the tour against les Regatas De bella vista, a sports club in the affluent suburbs of buenos Aires who had six rugby fields, five hockey pitches and two clubhouses. Club les Regatas De bella vista had played in the buenos Aires Premier Division last season.

The SCC lined up against their 3rd Xv in a 12:30 lunchtime kick on a hot sunny day. Despite a slow start for the SCC, it was a very competitive encounter and with tries from skipper Simon Etheredge, Sam Sharpe and Andy Douglas, we were still in the match with 20 minutes to go, though were trailing 28-17. Jet-lag and tired legs soon kicked in and les Regatas ran away with the game in the last 20 minutes scoring four unanswered tries to win the match 56 – 17.

2nd Match: SCC Vets vs. La Vaca Merceranos XVAfter a late lunch courtesy of les Regatas and a short bus ride, the SCC vets team made up mainly of Growlers and other over-35s then played the famous buenos Aires vets team, la vaca Merceranos in a social match at the SITAS sports club, with the SCC eventually running

36 THE PADANG | July/August 2012

out 57-12 winners in an entertaining game of rugby, with the SCC scoring nine tries in all, with the most senior tourist Terry Noe scoring one of the tries for the SCC. Regular vets rugby in Singapore really made a difference to fitness levels and stamina as the SCC dominated throughout. A fabulous after-match function was then laid on by our hosts, with some excellent barbecued meats and red wine served and stories were exchanged long into the night.

On Sunday 15 April, courtesy of Member Andrew Glass, the SCC Rugby Section were invited to a private Polo Tournament held at the Ellerstina Polo Club outside of buenos Aires, where the first weekend of the tournament was taking place. After a surprisingly relaxing overnight bus journey to Mendoza, the tour party then visited the famous Salentein vineyard for a full tour of the winery and the cellars, followed by a lunch in the private dining room in the gardens.

3rd Match: SCC Vets vs. Los Trompitas de Liceo Mendoza On Tuesday the SCC Rugby Section played two matches against the liceo Mendoza Rugby Club, a team whose 1st Xv play in the Mendoza Premier league, and whose playing fields border the vineyards with the snow capped mountains in the background – a superb setting.

The SCC vets played first against los Trompitas de liceo in the over 35s fixture. It was a highly physical and well-contested match with tries from Dave Griffiths and Terry Noe. The high altitude made a difference to fitness levels and in a very close encounter, the SCC eventually went down three tries to two with a final score of 21-12 to los Trompitas.

4th Match: SCC vs. Liceo Mendoza The SCC match against a strong physical liceo Mendoza was a terrific contest. With the SCC taking an early lead through brendan Nolan and adding a further try through Andy bourke, a real shock result was in prospect at halftime with the SCC 13-3 ahead. A massive defensive effort in the second half with every player putting bodies on the line for the black and gold, meant that the SCC ran out worthy and deserved winners against top class opposition. Final Score 13-8. A fiercely contested match, played in a great spirit against a much larger, more physical side and it took real character to hold on until the final whistle. Without doubt, the match of the tour and a terrific result.

Another tremendous after-match function in the liceo clubhouse followed where the hosts provided us with generous amounts of local produce – beef and red wine – which proved to be another memorable evening. On Wednesday 18 April, the tour party went white-water rafting in the Andes to cap off a superb tour. After a bus back to buenos Aires and a court session that turned out somewhat controversial, the tour party departed for Singapore. A fabulous tour that will go down in the annuals of SCC rugby history as immense.

SOCCER HAPPENINGSArticle by Graham Dickson | Convenor: Graham Dickson

I would like to congratulate our Soccer Firsts who have won the Cosmopolitan league and Cup double for the third time in a row. Winning both these trophies is a major accomplishment and congratulations to the entire squad. In a very competitive Cup Final, SCC defeated Casuals by a score of 3-1 to secure the trophy. The goals were scored by James kilbee, Jahan and Andrew Hutcheon.

Players of the season for me go to Scott Starr and Andrew Hutcheon. Starr has saved us on many occasions this season and Hutcheon has delivered with 38 league goals. The team lost only one league game all season and scored a record number of goals in winning the title. The team also did very well at the recent HkFC Sevens where they had the opportunity to play against Glasgow Rangers and Sunderland among others. We will need new players for the coming season and hopefully we will sign a couple in the close season to bolster our squad.

The Padangtiques went to Phuket recently to play the annual Henrik lorenz Memorial match with HkFC veterans. We lost the game 3-1 but I am told it was very close and could have gone either way. This gives us encouragement for next year and another challenge to HkFC. Well done to all our players who made it to Phuket.

SCC LIONS 2011/12 | Article by Anthony MooreThe SCC lions is largely made up of “veteran” ex First Team stalwarts (Arjen Flierman, bruce loggie, Tony Moore, Rob Gulston), a few current Cosmo league players (Aran buckley, Doug Wills, Henry Turner, Andrew Talbot, lenny Ong, Francois Dotta) and ex NFl players (Ray lim, Foo, Jason Chua). Many of the squad have played semi-pro soccer in the Uk in their younger days and every now and then, we are blessed to have Cosmo icons Richie Allen and Steve Webster joining us.

We usually play the “reserve” teams of Cosmo league sides, Equatorial league sides and stronger vets sides such as IA, Ark 7 and so on. We have a really strong balance of older and younger players and we usually win more than we lose in a season which in recent years has ended with an end of season dinner and prize ceremony!

Our highlights are usually our games against Indian Association (Soccer Fiesta) and The German All-Stars (Henrik lorenz Trophy). We are the current holders of both and the latter is particularly pleasing as GAS always put out a Cosmo strength side.

Our biggest win in recent years was in the fixture a couple of years ago where an IA side full of ex-Singapore Internationals succumbed to a gritty lions. Post game k. kannan ex Singapore and kuala lumpur in the Malaysia Cup heydays was quoted saying, “We are such a technically stronger side than SCC but your will to win and teamwork won you the game.” This is not the only captain who has said this in the “big” games when we seem to play well above ourselves.

The past captains (Maitrii and bruce loggie) made a massive difference in getting the side better organised and this has continued over the past two seasons with Aran, Terk and Tony providing a well-organised structure for players to enjoy a decent game of football and a few beers on a Thursday night!

SCC PADS IN PHUKET | Article by Alex KhanThis year saw the SCC PADS depart Singapore on the 25 May for the annual charity match versus HkFC in memory of Henrik lorenz and to raise funds for the youth Football Home he founded in Phuket. Sadly, the PADS did not bring the Henrik lorenz trophy back this year as they lost 3-1 to a well-drilled HkFC side. HkFC took a 1-0 lead into half time, making that 2-0 early in the second half.

In the pouring rain, SCC battled on with a well-worked goal from Patrick Read’s inch perfect cross and Mark Patel’s glancing header. At 2-1 it was game on but HkFC kept the ball well and stretched a tiring SCC side, capitalising on this with their third goal. Nonetheless, we played with pride, passion and determination, making HkFC work hard all the way to the end in a tough, robust match.

This is an annual charity game in aid of the youth Football Home in Phuket that was founded by the late Henrik lorenz. HkFC supplied the balls and boots this year and the PADS supplied a whopping THb100,000 (approx. SGD4,000) cheque that was raised by the touring party with generous donations from other Section Members and one of the PADS opposition, the Perth Strollers. As captain, I would like to thank you all!

Well done and thanks have go out to the following people who made this weekend happen for the 25 of us who were able to make the trip; Jim Redfern, Peter Schott, Mark Patel, brian lavelle, Jas bhens and Phil Maddox.

Special thanks to Wing, Hannu, the staff and of course the children from the yFH who hosted both sets of players with a fine meal and some very nice cold beers.

We will see you all next year!

SQUASH AT THE DARTSWith an average age of around 25 we were not only the youngest team but also the best looking (see photo) and in the end not bad at darts either.

The team of Avinash Reddy, bryden yong, Francis and William Nicholas came in at a very pleasing third place behind Tennis and Golf. With no one having very much experience in playing darts and William sporting a cast on one arm, we may have seemed easy pickings to some of the other Sections. but we defied all expectations. According to my sources the evening was very enjoyable, with the Darts Section being most helpful in showing us what to aim for. The atmosphere was very convivial, although we were sustained more by Coca Cola than beer. Thanks to the Darts Section for organising the bull’s Eye Tournament and thanks to our four players.

SCC SPORTS AWARDS NIGHTMahes and I were honoured to attend the Sports Awards on behalf of the Section and we were accompanied by nominees vivian Rhamanan, Royston Raymond and Mao Shi yuan. Our other nominee Mao Shi Hui could not attend. This is the first time I have attended and thought it a wonderful gesture from the Club to recognise and reward our worthy sportsmen and women. It was quite a formal evening and our two men looked right sharp in section blazers.

It was a very gratifying night for us as we won four major awards: Sportsman of the year – vivian; Sportswoman of the year – Shi Hui; and Junior Sportsman of the year – Royston. And to cap off a very successful evening Squash won Section of the year. This is an outstanding achievement and a credit to all our players and I think is due in a large part to our committee who put in an awful lot of time and effort to keep the Section going.

I would also like to add that thanks to our juniors we continue to be a force in squash in Singapore. youngsters in Singapore have many demands on their time and it cannot be easy to juggle schoolwork with sport and still have time for friends and family. We appreciate their commitment to us and hope we give back to them in turn.

And our final award went to koh Wai keng who received the Spirit of Sport Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to squash at SCC over the years. Although no longer playing due to a tragic accident, he is still an important part of squash at SCC and in Singapore. He is highly regarded by all those who know him and is one of the pillars of squash at SCC. He could not be there to receive his award, but I gladly skipped up there to get it on his behalf.

FRIENDLY WITH

38 THE PADANG | July/August 2012

BRITISH ROYAL AIR FORCEOn Saturday 26 May, the british RAF visited the Club for a friendly match. This was the first time we have had them visit the Club. They brought a strong group of 10 players with a great deal of depth in their line up. We had a decent line up though not as strong as it could have been with quite a few of our players away.

We paid the price as we lost the first seven matches. To be sure, the matches were all close affairs with everyone putting in their best effort. However, in most cases, our visitors were just too fit and ran us down. Fortunately we managed to get two of our top juniors at the last minute to come down and they redeemed some of our battered pride with wins over the top two seeds. Overall score was a humbling 8-2 in favour of our visitors.

Good thing about us is that we do not dwell too long on defeats and proceeded to treat our visitors to a really nice evening at Stumps which went on till past two in the morning. A really enjoyable visit by the RAF guys and we hope to entertain again in the future.
