Compared to last month: Holstein steers weighing under 500 lbs traded 31.00 – 41.00 higher. Holstein steers weighing over 500 lbs traded mostly 4.00 – 13.00 higher on comparable sales. Trading activity was active on very good buyer demand. The supply consisted of about 90% Holstein steers, Jersey steers and the remaining balance being Holstein heifers. About 20%of the supply weighing over 600 lbs. Next Holstein feeder cattle auction will be held on Monday, August 4, 2014.

The hay market was sharply lower. There was new hay and old hay sold. You can easily tell which was new and which was old by the prices. Keep in mind we had one plus inch of rain on the hay. It makes a lot of difference in the prices. There were several dairy and feed lot buyers at this sale. The cow/calf man is not yet ready to stock up for their winter supply. The average people only buying in small amounts due to the availability of grass in the area. Please read the representative sale. The next hay sale will be on July 26, 2014.

Compared to Wednesday’s Stock Show Special: Steer calves weighing under 700 pounds traded mostly 5.00 to 6.00 lower, with instances of 8.00 lower calves weighing between 550 and 600 pounds. Yearling type steers weighing over 700 pounds traded 2.00 to 3.00 lower. Heifers traded mostly 3.00 to 6.00 where comparable sales were noted.

Wednesday, July 3, 2014Over 400 head of slaughter cattle were sold today with the market climbing higher again on beef cows and bulls. Bulls continue to impress, topping the market today at $146.50, with eight head bringing over $140/cwt, and overall $3-5 higher than last week. Beef cows averaged $3 higher than last week with fat beef cows ranging from $117.00-128.50. Lean beef cows were again strong, ranging from 114.00-122.50. Fat Holsteins averaged 103.00-112.00, with lean Holstein cows averaging $107.50. Steers and heifers with good cover and near finished were well represented, with steers ranging from $133.00-177.00, and heifers $120-143.50. Top quality Holstein heifers from a Greeley producer weighed 867-1385# with prices ranging $122.00-139.00. Stars of the beef cow market today were from Montrose, CO, Delta, CO and Panaca, NV. Cattle from a dispersal out of Salt Lake City topped the market for young heifers, heiferettes, feeder bulls and bulls.
