Modular systems, such as the Dell PowerEdge M1000e, provide a great
option to address availability requirements at the hardware level.
Modular systems have inherent capabilities for providing hot plugging
of modules without the need to bring down an entire chassis. Modules
in the chassis can be swapped with minimal impact to the overall datacenter environment. When modules are swapped, especially
networking (Ethernet) and storage (Fibre Channel) devices,
configuration for these devices on external switches and routers would
need to be updated and refreshed. Depending upon the network and
storage topologies these configuration changes may ripple through
multiple nodes. This would result in unavailability of network and
storage resources to the application. Downtime of the resources could
be significant enough to negatively impact application performance.
These performance impacts may not be acceptable for mission criticalapplications and in general it might not to be desirable to have any
downtime on network and storage resources due to changes in a
system configuration.

Once the FlexAddress feature has been enabled, users may choose to
leave the SD card plugged into the CMC for long term storage, or it
may be removed. Users should not alter data on the SD card in any
way as it may inhibit system function and cause it to malfunction.
Note: To enable FlexAddress, customers must purchase this SD card
(Dell Part #0J822F) at the time of original sale of the PowerEdge
M1000e chassis (if chosen the SD card will be installed from the
factory) or it can be purchased after original sale as a customer kit.
Caution: Customers cannot supply their own third party SD cards to
enable FlexAddress, as there is no way to transfer the FlexAddress
information to a third party SD card.
