Groundbreaking on the 140-bed initial phase of Dr Devi Shetty’s Narayana Medical Centre and University is set for August this year, with the first patients admitted 12 months later.

Inauguration of the medical-school component of the project will start just after the August groundbreaking, with an intake of 100 students toward the end of the year, in cooperation with a local school while construction is under way at the Narayana centre.

At a Friday morning gathering at the offices of Gene Thompson, local director for the Shetty project and Director of the Thompson Development Group, Dr Shetty and three executives from his Bangalore-based Narayana Hrudayalaya delivered a progress report on the projected $2 billion, 2,000-bed hospital and medical college project, planned for 200 acres at East End’s High Rock.

A circle of nearly a dozen dive boats and other small vessels marked the first anniversary of the sinking of the Kittiwake, a designer dive-site off the coast of West Bay.

The parade, which was organised by the Department of Tourism (DOT) and Cayman Islands Tourism Association (CITA), was completed with the 3-canon salute from the Jolly Roger pirate ship, after which many divers and snorkellers jumped into the sea, to see what they

could see. There was even a helicopter too,

to record the spectacle from a bird’s eye view.

Jane van der Bol Executive Director Cayman Islands Tourism Association said: “It’s been a fabulous success - an incredible year. We had hoped that probably ten thousand divers and snorkelers would experience the Kittiwake, but 11 thousand divers and 9 thousand snorkelers –over 20 thousand people altogether, have been on the Kittiwake in the past year.

“The Kittiwake is one of the top 12 wrecks of the world according to Scuba

Diving Magazine. I’ve dived her and its very exciting. She’s so long, and has five floors so you can spend quite a bit of time on the Kittiwake, it’s a fabulous dive.

“The Kittiwake saved other people in boats and submarines,” Ms van der Bol continued. “She used to be a saver of divers, and there are decompression chambers on the Kittiwake. You can go into the bathrooms, and the glass mirrors are there, and you can see yourself diving.

“And the fish love it. When I went diving there was a big grouper staring at himself in the mirror.”

“Groundbreaking will be in August this year, said Narayana CEO Dr A Raghuvanshi, “and will be complete in one year. We will start the medical school by the end of this year and take 100 students to start.”

He said the school would “start in a local institution, somewhere else, just to get us going quicker, within the next school year,” while construction on the Shetty school would be during “the next two years to three years.”

Both Mr Thompson and Dr Shetty declined to name the “local institution”, but did not deny it would be St Matthews University School of Medicine.

Dr Shetty, who left yesterday morning after his Tuesday arrival, said the school would train doctors, nurses and technicians, guaranteeing employment and enabling Cayman to build an indigenous healthcare industry.

“In the last seven years in the US,” he said, referring to a nationwide --- and global -- recession, “medicine is the only industry to have created jobs, between three million and four million.

“No country should have to depend on foreigners, but should be

able to support its own healthcare.” The project, he said, “will drive the local, the Caribbean and the world economy. Doctors, nurses and technicians will always have jobs. The best gift you can give is training in medical services.”

The new hospital would eliminate the need for airlifts to Miami, Dr Shetty said, pointing to “two or three every day, and sometimes as many as seven, and you have to look at the costs, the inconvenience and the risks”.

Narayana would enable ”every man, woman and child to undergo major surgery without having to sell their assets”, providing affordable medical care to people throughout Cayman, the Caribbean and even North America.

Mr Thompson reviewed the East End land acquisition from landowner and entrepreneur Joe Imparato, who holds more than 600 acres at the site. In partnership with the Shetty project, he was likely to develop a range of ancillary facilities in the area, he said.

Surveys of the 200-acre Narayana portion of High Rock had already started, pending planning application for subdivision of the site.

“We are moving ahead aggressively with figuring out the planning,” Mr Thompson said.

“The first application will be for ‘parcelisation’, then it should be sometime in May for the 140-bed hospital.”

Already, government has changed three laws – regarding medical qualifications, import duties and malpractice insurance -- to enable the hispital, leaving only the issue of tissue transplants.

In the autumn, Minister for Health Mark Scotland had promised to complete both the legal changes and the regulations supporting the laws. Mr Thompson acknowledged yesterday that the timing had slipped, but was enthusiastic about progress.

“It’s all just about complete now,” he said. “We had a number of meetings and we are comfortable to proceed now”. Government “had been very cooperative to enable us to move ahead,” and was likely to finish “in the first part of the year”.

Dr Shetty acknowledged that legislative changes were difficult, but, compared to other governments, he said, The Cayman Islands government works very fast.

“We have met all the officials and it’s been a real joy working with the Cayman Islands government.

“Our intention is to change the rules of the game. We want to build a centre of excellence, and people will come not because it is cheap, but because it is the best,” he said.

The new space is now larger providing customers more privacy while conducting their banking transactions. The new service centre, ATM and the new Cayman National 2012 calendar were well received by all in attendance.

In his opening remarks, Cayman National Bank Executive Vice President, Brian Esau said: “Cayman National is pleased to again bring banking to our clients. Just over a year ago we expanded our premises in West Bay, and today we are happy to see the completion of this project in Little Cayman which also now houses an ATM to better serve our customers.

Radio broadcaster shot dead in south PhilippinesMANILA, Philippines (AP) — Gunmen fatally shot a radio broadcaster as he drove his car with his wife and son in what an advocacy group said Friday was the 150th journalist slain in the Philippines since democracy was restored in 1986.

Police said they did not yet know the motive for the attack late Thursday in southern General Santos city on Christopher Guarin, 42, a broadcast journalist on Radio Mindanao Network and a publisher of a small local tabloid.

He read a text message on air this

week in which the sender warns Guarin he would be killed, but his co-anchor said Guarin found the text puzzling and did not know of any enemies.

Guarin managed to flee his vehicle when gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire, but the assailants chased him down and shot him repeatedly at close range before escaping, regional police chief Benjardi Matele said.

His wife, who was slightly injured in the attack, said in a radio interview that her husband had received death threats.

Guarin’s 12-year-old son was not injured but was traumatized, said Supt. Resty Damaso, a regional police spokesman.

Police planned to question Guarin’s wife on the nature of the death threats against him, Damaso said.

Fred Solinap, Guarin’s co-anchor in their program on herbal medicine, said Guarin was puzzled by a text message he got during their radio broadcast on Tuesday. The message, which Guarin read on air, warned him in the local dialect not to go out or he will be killed.

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Portia Simpson Miller was sworn in for the second time as Jamaica’s prime minister Thursday, pledging to ease its deep poverty, boost the sputtering economy, heal political divisions and sever colonial-era links with Britain.

Cayman Premier McKeeva Bush was present at Thursday’s ceremony.

Simpson Miller, whose 1½-year-long first stint in office ended in 2007, took the oath of office before roughly 10,000 guests on the grounds of the rambling, colonial-style mansion that is the official residence of the governor-general.

The 66-year-old politician scored a dramatic victory in last week’s national elections, leading her slightly left-leaning People’s National Party to a 2-to-1 margin in Parliament over the center-right Jamaica Labor Party. Her opposition faction won a dominating 42 seats in the 63-seat legislature, leaving the incumbent party with 21.

The plainspoken, charismatic Simpson Miller, this Caribbean island’s first female prime minister, takes over from Andrew Holness, a 39-year-old Labor lawmaker who was leader for just over two months.

“After being tested and tempered, I stand before you today a stronger and better person prepared to be of service to my country and people,” Simpson Miller said at the start of a spirited 45-minute speech.

She said her government intends to abandon the British monarch as Jamaica’s official head of state, and

instead adopt a republican form of government. Jamaica declared independence from Britain in 1962 but remains within the Commonwealth and has Queen Elizabeth II as head of state.

“I love the queen; she is a beautiful lady,” Simpson Miller quipped, before speaking to the audience in Jamaican patois: “But I think time come.”

Simpson Miller also said she will replace the Privy Council in London with the Trinidad-based Caribbean Court of Justice as Jamaica’s highest court of appeal. She said this will “end judicial surveillance from London.”

She vowed her government will “ease the burdens and the pressues of increasing poverty, joblessness and deteriorating standards of living” while also pursuing a tight fiscal policy and forging strong partnerships with the private sector and international partners such as the International Monetary Fund.

“My administration will work tirelessly that while we try to balance the books we balance people’s lives as well,” Simpson Miller said.

Jamaica is a cash-strapped island with a punishing debt of roughly $18.6 billion, or 130 percent of gross domestic product.

In the short- and medium-term, the prime minister said her administration will use “state resources” to stimulate jobs through the Jamaica Emergency Employment Program, a centerpiece of her party’s campaign manifesto.

Her People’s National Party said

it will try to renegotiate roughly 25 percent of a troubled $400 million road program financed by China in order to transfer some of the money to the emergency employment program as a way to kickstart the economy.

The prime minister also urged Jamaicans to create a more civil and respectful society and earnestly strive to make the best of themselves.

“We will seek to make this country one of brothers and sisters, not of rivals and victims,” she said.

After her speech, Simpson Miller elicited laughter from the audience by dragging a slightly embarrassed-looking Holness, now the leader of the opposition, to the podium and saying she was his “second mother.”

Winter a tough time for Florida tropical fish farmersLAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — It’s a tense time at Imperial Tropicals, one of central Florida’s largest ornamental fish farms.

It will be days, if not weeks, before farmer Fran Drawdy discovers how the recent cold snap will affect her fish.

Her millions of platies, mollies and guppies in outdoor ponds could die quickly from the drastic temperature change — it went from 80 degrees on Christmas to 20 degrees two weeks later — or they could fall sick and linger from stress or a fungus.

Almost all the nation’s domestically-raised tropical and ornamental

fish come from Florida, and when cold weather strikes the results can be devastating.

“We have tremendous challenges with the cold,” said Drawdy, who has owned the central Florida farm with her family for 40 years. “Our prayer was that we wouldn’t face that this year. We were just really starting to recover.”

Drawdy is referring to 2010, when many Florida ornamental fish farmers lost between 80 and 100 percent of their stock. That year, temperatures stayed below 50 for 11 days straight in January and then another cold snap in December struck the area.

“The last three winters in a row it seems like we have been just clobbered,” said David Boozer, executive director of the Florida Tropical Fish Farms Association, a group that counts 231 farmers as members.

Philippines to shut some mines after landslideMANILA, Philippines (AP) — The Philippine government on Friday ordered the shutdown of gold-mining tunnels threatened by landslides in a southern town where a chunk of a mountain tumbled down on sleeping residents, killing at least 27 people.

The landslide struck hours before dawn Thursday on a mountain dotted with mine shafts and crude shanties with corrugated metal roofs in Napnapan village in Compostela Valley province.

It was the area’s second deadly landslide in a year — 20 people were killed in a neighboring village last April

— and prompted the environment secretary to call for curbing permits in the region’s small-scale gold- mining industry.

Authorities in Pantukan township, where Napnapan village is located, expect to complete a survey next week that will indicate where landslides are likely to happen. Mines that sit in the danger zone will be ordered shut, and the workers and their families living on the mountain will be relocated, said Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo.

Robredo, who flew over the village in a military helicopter Friday, also ordered that gold ore processing be

moved from Napnapan village to the town center so that the miners’ families don’t have to live with them near the mines.

“It will be more expensive, but it will be more safe,” he said. “I am sure there will be resistance — that’s why this will be enforced by the armed forces and the police.”

OGDEN, Utah (AP) — A Utah police officer who died in a shootout that wounded five colleagues and the suspect had long-dreamed of a life in law enforcement, despite the risks of the job, family members said.

Ogden officer Jared Francom (pictured) died early Thursday at a hospital, hours after he and a team of bulletproof vest-wearing officers rapped on the door of a small, red-brick Ogden house to serve a search warrant in a drug investigation.

When no one responded, the officers burst inside only to meet a hail of gunfire, authorities say.

“Jared died doing what he loved,”

brother Travis Francom said. “He worried at times, for his safety. I don’t think so much for himself, but for his family, his two little girls and his wife ... but I don’t think he was ever afraid.”

When it was over Wednesday night, a seven-year veteran officer was dead and five other officers were injured, some critically. The suspect, an Army veteran whose estranged father said suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and may have been self-medicating with marijuana, was injured.

Now, as the city tries to grapple with the outburst of violence and the loss of one of its officers, investigators are

trying to determine how the raid as part of a drug investigation could have gone so terribly wrong.

iEditorial OPINIONS

I was not surprised to hear that local businesses and retailers were generally

reporting a woeful Christmas and some believe that unless the economy picks up they may fold. However, I am convinced 2012 will see an upswing and the Government does seem to be trying very hard to get at least one of their major projects started. Whilst fully understanding worried people’s suspicions and quite justifiable concerns over everyone of them, we are at a time when we have to take the gamble. ‘A bird in the hand is worth two in the Bush’ (pun not intended) and if we delay much longer not one will take place. The Cayman Islands will be left way behind and we really will be just a small dot on the map and an insignificant one at that. We are in a recession and sometimes good intentions lets the bird fly away to another destination before everyone realises it is too late to bring him back.

Some politicians and a lot of the general public shout for a balanced budget. That is impossible in a recession and trying to achieve that is self-defeating. A deficit has to increase during a recession because Government revenues decline. Government deficit spending to make up for the decline in investment spending reduces the fall in demand, and monetary policy that makes interest rates low and credit available encourages investment spending to resume. With just one of the major projects commencing it provides jobs and people will spend money. Come on everyone wake up to the reality of our situation.

Having said this one area in our service industry really does need waking up. Manners in our service outlets is often just appalling. I have spoken on this subject before and there have been many blogs on the subject. Take this as an example. The other day my wife (Joan) had to go to a George Town fast food restaurant to get lunch for her grandchild who was at school in Red Bay. She was very explicit when she placed the order and it was busy. She was in a hurry and did not check what had been given to her. Yes, her mistake, too. She drives to Red Bay and upon handing

the lunch to her grandchild finds it is very wrong. The grandchild is distressed and gives the food away to some of her friends. Joan drives back and revisits the restaurant and complains. The manager says to her, “What do you expect me to do about it?” No apology, just rudeness.

Talking of Red Bay, the local group of sea captains that are promoting the idea of developing the cruise berthing facilities in the South Sound-Red Bay area have taken up advice and have sent their proposals to the major cruise lines and the Florida Cruise Association. I am still not convinced bussing cruise passengers from Red Bay will produce the same revenues as a George Town berthing dock. I am basing this on facts from other destinations – the walk off straight to the shops and the transported ones to the shops. The former wins.

Interestingly, Joan was going through a “1992 Cayman Islands Yearbook” and found this entry under June 1991: “Red Bay residents are ‘outraged’ by a proposed port facility that would make Cayman a cruise ship turnaround base.” What do they think of the Captains’ proposal now in 2012?

It was nice to hear about a proposed major expansion to the Morritt’s timeshare and resort facility in East End. Morritts Tortuga Club and Moritt’s Grand Resort developers’ announced an anticpated investment of over US$70 million over the next 5 to 10 years. The developers anticipated starting construction on the first phase by June this year.

The fab five in my heading are the ‘anonymous’ five members of a delegation that accompanied Premier McKeeva Bush who attended the swearing in ceremony in Jamaica of its new prime-minister Portia Simpson-Miller last Thursday (5). We have to date not received any details who the five are although we do know one of them is George Town MLA Ellio Solomon, although we understand he is there mainly for talks with China Harbour Engineering Company.

It is nice to have a more upbeat editorial today with some positive announcements and I haven’t even mentioned the Shetty Hospital project. Watch this space.

Solving 9x9 sudoku puzzles

Sudoku begins with some of the grid cells already filled with numbers. The object of Sudoku is to fill the other empty cells with numbers between 1 and 9. Each number can appear only once on each row and column.

GOOD LUCK!

Community coordinator says farewellCAYMAN ISLANDS (GIS) — After 26 years as a public servant, the time has come to say goodbye. Community Development Co-ordinator Zemrie Thompson, MBE announced her retirement from the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), effective 1 January 2012.

Having worked with the Department of Immigration, the Department of Education and DCFS, the retiree paid her dues to Government and the people of the Cayman Islands.

While many were asleep at night, Ms. Thompson spent hours brainstorming and creating programmes that would improve individuals and the communities they live in.

In the past four years, Ms. Thompson headed various projects. In 2008, she created the SET For Life afterschool programme. SET -- Socialising Education and Training -- aims to help children complete homework and enhance their learning abilities. The initiative also offers hands-on training for various vocational fields.

During this time, she also formed computer classes for seniors, arranged private sponsorship for students who were in need of school supplies and lunch, and led the Second Chance Programme which aims to help troubled children turn their lives around.

One of her joys has been working with elderly people. She is a member

of the Older Persons International Committee and began a Senior Retreat in 2002 which is now an annual event.

Minister of Community Affairs, Gender and Housing, the Hon. Mike Adam, MBE, JP, said, “Ms. Thompson is an outstanding public servant who consistently provided an invaluable service to the people of the Cayman Islands”.

Despite her work schedule, Ms. Thompson managed to find time to organize weddings, officiating as Minister and creating invitations and other decorations. She also helps out with Vocational Bible Studies at Agape Church and plays a role in community groups, particularly the Scranton community.

She recently returned from a mission trip to Jamaica. Having first organized sponsorship, Ms. Thompson carried donations to the needy. The long serving Coordinator said, “Personal satisfaction and praise is not about the recognition and awards, it’s about the reward you get from helping others.”

DCFS Acting Director Alicia (Jen) Dixon said, “I thank Ms. Thompson for her outstanding contribution to the department and to our community. Her years of tireless dedication and community leadership have made her the ideal example for others to follow. She is going to be deeply missed. We wish her all the best for the future!”

Following retirement, Ms.

Thompson intends to continue to be a devoted mother, an active Minister of her church, a philanthropist and role model. “It has been a wonderful journey to serve the Cayman Islands Government and although I look forward to retirement, I leave with joy and a source of great pride,” she said.

“I am confident knowing that DCFS has a strong and positive future as it continues to deliver remarkable service to children and families in our community,” Ms. Thompson added. “Thanks to all the people who have contributed to community development which helped make my job easier. Also, I will forever be grateful for the support of my fellow staff members as their encouragement contributed to my level of commitment.”

The week starting Monday, 9 January 2012, GIS Spotlight revisits children engaging in wholesome activities, reviews rehabilitation and re-scans the night sky.

First, we transport you to energising after-school activities for children featuring sports, performing arts and hands-on lessons that are invaluable, fun and healthy. See 800 students burn energy aiming to become fitter and better use their after-school hours.

Find out how you can volunteer in this public-private sector programme and influence a young person’s life for the better.

Then, it’s off to a workshop that kicked-off a national strategy. Hear from experts the new techniques being used to evaluate offenders’ rehabilitation against the backdrop of the national crime prevention strategy. Learn about input from practitioners of a top-notch Canadian programme.

Next, join us to see how you too can be inspired by the stars. Visit the University College of the Cayman Islands and hear about plans to build a home for a donated telescope,

Also learn what is planned in science and astronomy lessons for students and the whole community to maximise

the use of the state-of-the-art telescope. Produced by Government

Information Services, GIS Spotlight highlights government services and solutions regarding issues that concern and affect you.

The weekly programme now airs on Cayman27 at 7:30 p.m. on Mondays, and 7.30 p.m. on Thursdays. All stories seen in this week’s show can also be found on the GIS Marketing and Communications website: www.gis.ky.

Hundreds of family members and friends came to see seventy-three students from the International College of the Cayman Islands (ICCI) graduate at the Family Life Centre in George Town.

The graduates, many of whom had juggled full-time jobs with family commitments while attending school, received degrees at the associates, bachelors and masters level. Nine received a masters degree in Business Administration, three received a masters degree in human Resources, 23 received bachelors degrees, and 39 associate degrees.

In his keynote speech, Canover Watson, Managing Director of Admiral Administration Ltd, spoke about the increasingly competitive, globalised jobs marketplace:

“As Cayman connects with the outside world, our young people must be prepared to work alongside not

just people here in Cayman, but they must be prepared to work with people from all over the world,”

“As a result more jobs are going to require a college education or some kind of technical skills because the reality of globalisation is that our young people do not only have to be the best at what you do in Cayman, but they have to be the best at what you do in the entire world.”

International College student speaker, Kadian Taylor, who received a bachelors degree in International Finance said: “We won’t always know what career path to choose or where we go from here. But if we stay away from the career paths we don’t want or stay way from those things we don’t like, we will be just fine. We might even surprise ourselves having discovered that by staying away from what we do not want, we arrive at where we needed to be.”

Several graduates received additional honours such as the

James M. Bodden Memorial Award presented to Kimari Fletcher Barrett for exemplifying the spirit of volunteerism.

Kadian Smith Taylor also received the Ernst & Young Award as the bachelor degree graduate with the highest GPA.

The Cayman Islands Society of Professional Accountants gave awards to Donnalissa Thorpe as the associate degree recipient and Paula Cribb as the bachelor degree recipient for the highest GPA in accounting.

The Cayman Islands Brewery presented a $3,306 cheque to the Department of the Environment (DoE) on Wednesday night, supporting a three-year project to survey and manage Cayman’s shark and dolphin population.

The donation came as the fulfillment of the brewery’s pledge to donate 5¢ to the department’s preservation project from the sale of 66,123 cans of its new White Tip Lager, launched in July.

At a Marriott Beach Resort ceremony on Wednesday, Director of the Environment Gina Ebanks-Petrie unveiled preliminary results of the preservation project

“The department understands the great importance of sharks and dolphins to the environment and the diversity and abundance of all marine mammals,” she said, thanking sponsors Guy Harvey, Caybrew and the UK’s Overseas Territories Environment project.

Dr Mauvis Gore, one of three leaders of the survey and a prime researcher in at least four international marine-conservation projects, summarised some of the DoE findings.

“Most sharks stay well offshore and are found between Little Cayman and Cayman Brac,” she said, pointing at approximately 12 shark and four stingray species in the area, dominated

by nurse and coral reef sharks, and a sprinkling of tigers, hammerheads and white tips.

Globally, she said, between 26 million and 73 million sharks were caught annually, most to supply the

“huge Asian fin market”, then thrown back to drown. At least 26 species ware threatened with extinction in the next five years, she told the 50-member audience.

A second researcher, the University of Edinbugh’s Rupert Ormond pegged the annual economic value of the Cayman’s shark population between US$1.2 million and $1.75 million -- and dolphins at $1.1 million -- in watersports and tourism, figures likely to rise to at least US$16 million for both

in future.By contrast, the “consumptive value”

of sharks, he said, was “well under “US$10,000 per year”.

Dr Ormond recommended five options to local government for preservation of sharks and dolphins, including full protection in all territorial waters, expansion of Cayman’s too-small marine parks, ”catch-and-release” laws for the fishing industry, a ban on “finning” and a regulatory code mandating sustainable tourism.

“Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and parts of the US have protected their shark species,” he said, while Florida recently moved to give “full protection” to tiger and hammerhead sharks.

Our Eye OPINION

A man, Kemar Golding, lost his sight in one eye after being shot in the face at close range during a botched armed robbery at a jerk chicken store in Red Bay close to the Prospect Playhouse. Three masked men held up the man demanding cash but he told them he had none and was only helping his friend clean up. He was then shot.

Two thieves armed with a machete and baseball bat robbed Royal Palms bar and restaurant on the Seven Mile Beach.

Solid as a rock: UDP unscathed by the recent protestsKevin Creary

One hundred and fifty people is no indication that the people have spoken, claimed a leading United Democratic Party member.

Protests launched against the Government’s proposed developments were not truly the voice of the people, according to Mr. Rolstin Anglin, Minister of Education and member of the United Democratic Party, UDP.

He claimed the demonstrations, along with any allegations being made against the Honorable Premier, did not in anyway deflate the morale or cohesion of the party, and reaffirmed his support for Mr. Bush and all the members of the cabinet.

“I haven’t seen any discord or drop offs. We’re a group and we support each other,” said Mr Anglin.

The Minister suggested that the turn out of heavy equipment operators and job seekers at the Seven Mile Beach protest was also indicative of the support that the UDP enjoys and the faith that the supporters have in the party.

He added: “We had loads of supporters. I got to reconnect with lots of people [at the protest]. There are thousands that have faith in us, we are on the road to recovery.”

He expressed his sincere support and belief in the benefits to be derived from the country’s association with the Dart Group. The Minister said: “I wouldn’t support the Dart agreement if I didn’t agree with it.

“The key for us is to continue to get people to spend, you cannot save your way out of a recession. Spending is what generates the economy.”

Mr Anglin is not convinced that the march to the Legislative Assembly building on Tuesday was the will of the people.

“The march was all a part of Mr McLaughlin’s grand attempt to regain power. There are thousands who still support the UDP.” Said Mr. Anglin.

The Minister also suggested that the number of protesters fell far short of the amount that was expected.

“What is your interpretation of a march that one hundred and fifty people turned up to, when there was supposed to be thousands?

“The key aim for us is the development of our country.” Added Mr Anglin.

There were calls from members of the protest for the resignation of the Honorable Premier, calls which the UDP member do not consider threatening, or sincere.

Mr. Anglin said, “One hundred and fifty people do not represent an anxiety for change.

There were two protest staged during the month of May both encompassing the opposition’s objections to the development of the East End Sea Port, the North Sound dredging, the $1.2 billion dollar negotiation between the Government and Dart group and West Bay Road closure.

“A piece of me has died as well”Continued form front page

It was then the insects turned on Ms Paddyfoote – and began to attack her as she fled into her landlord’s house.

“I was frantic. I was hollering and screaming,” she said. “I just wanted to get to my animals but couldn’t. In the end we ran into my landlords house and took shelter inside.

“We were all prisoners inside their house. We were trapped and needed to be rescued so I called the Fire Brigade.”

Firefighters came to the property on Shetland Lane, West Bay, but they too were beaten back by the swarm of bees.

“I just wanted to get to my dogs but I was told they were already dead,” she said. “Even one of the firefighters was stung by them and so was my landlady.”

The owner of the bees was eventually contacted and he killed the insects involved in the attack.

When Ms Paddyfoote spoke with the beekeeper he apologised and told her to “do whatever she needed to do”.

She added: “I understand the importance of bees in nature and I understand they create life and play a very important role.

“But my two dogs are dead because of them. They meant everything to me. I would take them out all the time and I loved them that much they

would even sleep in my bed with me. “I don’t think I’ll ever be able to get

over what has happened.”Yesterday police confirmed they

are investigating the incident. A spokeswoman for the RCIPS said: “We can confirm that police are investigating an incident where two dogs were killed by bees, in Shetland Lane, West Bay on Sunday 3 July.

“Police initially received the report around 2.30 pm on Sunday and, as a result of the incident, the owner of the bees, who resides in Sunny Powery Drive, destroyed them.

“Police enquiries are ongoing.”Ms Paddyfoote added: “I cared

so much about Castro and Oz. They meant everything to me.

“I feel a little piece of me died on Sunday along with them.”

Several months ago another dog in the West Bay area was killed by

repeated bee stings. And a man also died when he

disturbed a nest carrying out work on a property.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. is due Friday to begin serving 90 days in a county jail in Las Vegas for his guilty plea in a domestic violence case involving an attack on his ex-girlfriend while two of their children watched in September 2010.

A judge last month ordered the undefeated 34-year-old prizefighter to turn himself in for a three-month sentence that Las Vegas police say could end up being about 60 days with good behavior and work time.

Mayweather’s lawyers, his promoter-manager, Leonard Ellerbe, and court and jail officials didn’t say Thursday what, if any, arrangements had been made for the surrender of the fighter who goes by the nickname “Money.” He has earned upwards of $20 million for his most recent fights against Victor Ortiz, which won him the WBC welterweight belt, and “Sugar” Shane Mosley.

Attorney Karen Winckler has

said she was considering asking the judge who sentenced Mayweather to reconsider.

Jail time is expected to limit training for a possible Cinco de Mayo date for a fight in Las Vegas, where Mayweather’s promoters reserved a May 5 date at the MGM Grand Garden Arena for a possible fight against an as-yet unnamed opponent.

There has been no word from Mayweather’s either camp about any proposals for a long-awaited showdown between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, a champion fighter from the Philippines against whom Mayweather’s welterweight success is usually measured. The two men have a defamation lawsuit pending in Las Vegas federal court stemming from statements by Mayweather that he suspected Pacquiao was taking performance-enhancing drugs.

Mayweather pleaded guilty Dec. 21 to a reduced battery domestic

violence charge and no contest to two harassment charges in a plea deal that saw prosecutors drop felony and misdemeanor charges that could have gotten Mayweather 34 years in state prison if he was convicted of all charges.

The case stemmed from a hair-pulling, punching and arm-twisting argument with Josie Harris, the mother of three of Mayweather’s children, and threats to beat their sons in an argument about Harris dating another man. Harris, now 31, lives in the Los Angeles area with the couple’s two sons, now 12 and 10, and a daughter age 8.

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — Australian Open champion Kim Clijsters became the second top contender for the year’s first major to suffer an injury setback when she retired Friday from her Brisbane International semifinal against Daniela Hantuchova.

Clijsters (pictured) won the opening set 7-6 (4), but surrendered a break at the start of the second set and needed treatment after the third game. She came back on court for one game before walking to the net and telling Hantuchova she couldn’t continue after falling behind 3-1.

Hantuchova has had an abbreviated run into Saturday’s final, getting a walkover in the quarterfinals when 13-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams withdrew from the tournament after injuring her left ankle while winning a second- round match.

No. 24-ranked Hantuchova will be aiming for her fifth WTA Tour title when she plays No. 34-ranked Kaia Kanepi of Estonia, who took less than an hour to beat 2010 French Open

winner Francesca Schiavone of Italy 6-3, 6-0 in the other semifinal. The third-seeded Schiavone complained of a stomach upset after the match.

Both Clijsters and Williams, the 2010 Australian Open champion, were playing their first tournaments in four months.

The top two seeded players tumbled early in the women’s draw, with U.S. Open champion Sam Stosur ousted in the second round and No. 2 Andrea Petkovic losing to Kanepi in the quarterfinals.

Clijsters struggled with injuries last season and only played eight tournaments, including the win at the Australian Open that helped her return to the No. 1 ranking for one week.

The Brisbane International was her first tournament since an abdominal injury ended her season in September and the latest setback casts doubt on her ability to defend her title at the first major of 2012. The Australian Open starts on Jan. 16 in Melbourne.

Meanwhile Roger Federer has pulled out of his semifinal match

against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the Qatar Open because of a back injury.

The 16-time Grand Slam champion says his back has not improved since beating Andreas Seppi in three sets on Thursday.

Rafael Nadal will meet Gael Monfils in the other semifinal match.

KAPALUA, Hawaii (AP) — One par was worth two trophies. One tournament paid Bill Haas just over $11.4 million.

He starts over with a clean slate Friday at the Tournament of Champions, with one less perk than the other winners from last season. Haas won the Tour Championship, the one PGA Tour event in which the winner is not guaranteed a chance to defend his title.

Haas will have to play well over the next eight months, then work his way through the FedEx Cup playoffs and be among the top 30 players who get to East Lake for a shot at the $10 million bonus.

“The goal is to be consistent and try to get back to the Tour Championship to give myself that chance to defend,” he said Thursday. “If I don’t defend, hopefully it’s because I finish 31st and my year was still somewhat successful.

“We’ll just see how I’m feeling about that in October.”

That seems like such a long way off. There are still four majors ahead of him, including a return to The Olympic Club in San Francisco for the U.S. Open, and to Royal Lytham & St. Annes for the British Open. There is that huge incentive of making the Ryder Cup team; Haas played his first team event two months ago at Royal Melbourne in the Presidents Cup.

It’s a lot to digest. And there’s a lot of competition.

Even though 11 players decided not to play — or because of injuries, could not play — in the winners-only tournament that kicks off the new season, all anyone has to do is look around at some of the new faces.

Twelve players in the 28-man field are at Kapalua for the first time. Nine of the players are in their 20s.

“Right now it seems that young is good,” said Steve Stricker, who turns 45 next month.

Stricker is making his fourth consecutive trip to Maui, the longest streak of any player in the field. It’s a familiar start to the season. Not so familiar are some of the guys he’ll be trying to beat. A year ago Stricker didn’t know who some of them were.

Keegan Bradley? He was known more as the nephew of LPGA great Pat Bradley until he won two times, including that unlikely comeback in Atlanta to capture the PGA Championship in his first try at a major.

Jhonattan Vegas was the first PGA Tour member from Venezuela. Scott Stallings? Brendan Steele?

“I know them now a little bit,” Stricker said Thursday on the eve of the opening round.

The PGA Tour season gets under way Friday. It wants to get away from the NFL playoffs on Sunday, so the final round will end Monday just before the BCS Championship game starts.

The new faces at Kapalua are not the only difference.

Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods are no longer part of the top 10 in the world ranking. There are no Americans among the top five for the first time in nearly two decades. And even without the likes of U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy, Masters champion Charl Schwartzel or Martin Kaymer in Hawaii, the young guys are making a strong push.

“There’s been a transformation of players out here, and it was going to happen eventually,” said Stricker, who turns 45 next month. “We saw Tiger and Phil slip out of the top 10, and we have some European players coming in there — young European players and young Americans — playing well and stepping right up early on in their careers. So it’s fun to see.”

Haas is among those players expected to take his game up another notch. He has known all along that it’s not easy to get to the next level, having Jay Haas as his father.

“I guess I knew going in ... obviously, I was a cocky young kid, but I knew how good everybody was,” he said. “I was playing with my dad on the weekend and getting beat every time. Inside, I knew I wasn’t quite good enough yet to be as cocky as I was. I got out on the Nationwide Tour, wanting to be out here, thinking I deserved to be out here.

“But I quickly learned you don’t deserve to be out here,” he said. “You earn everything.”

And now, everyone starts at zero.Stricker hopes he gets some

advantage through his experience on the Plantation Course, unlike any other course on tour. It was built on a mountain, offering severe changes in elevation, massive greens with slope and grain, and uninterrupted views of the Pacific Ocean.

The surf has been particularly strong on Maui this week, and it creates quite the contrast. Players working their way along the back nine can look down the cliffs and see the ocean littered with surfers off the point at Honolua Bay.

It’s relaxing, but it’s still work. The winners get a small head

start on the rest of the PGA Tour in a short field with no cut, essentially free money from the $5.6 million purse and a jump in the FedEx Cup standings.

It worked beautifully last year for Jonathan Byrd, who won his final event of 2010 to qualify for Kapalua, then opened his season with a playoff win over Robert Garrigus.

Byrd was walking through the Maui airport when he saw promotional posters of him on the wall. His son, Jackson, looked at the poster and said, “Dad, I think you’re famous.”

Byrd’s reply: “At least for this week I am.”

The FA Cup third round has a reputation for underdogs shocking the big boys and one of English football’s heavyweights is guaranteed to receive a knockout blow in this year’s competition.

For rivals Manchester City and Manchester United go head-to-head at the Etihad Stadium in the biggest tie of the round.

Elsewhere, there are several potential banana skins for Premier League sides this weekend.

The round began with Liverpool hosting League One side Oldham Athletic, who make the short journey along the East Lancs Road on Friday night, in the first meeting between the sides since 1994.

Ninety-five places separate Everton and non-league visitors Tamworth in the football standings with the Midlands club aiming to cause one of the competition’s biggest shocks at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Another Blue Square Premier side aiming to create history is Fleetwood Town, who were handed a dream

home tie against Championship neighbours Blackpool.

Tony Pulis returns to former club Gillingham after the draw paired his Stoke City side with the League Two team. Pulis, who guided the Gills to promotion from the fourth tier in 1996, will go head-to-head with current Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler - who was brought to the Kent club as a player by the Welshman.

League One leaders Charlton are aiming to cause an upset when they travel across London to face Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Owen Coyle’s Bolton take a break from their Premier League relegation battle by making the short journey to League Two side Macclesfield - without exit-bound defender Gary Cahill. Another lower league team targeting a top-flight scalp is League One promotion hopefuls MK Dons, who welcome Queens Park Rangers up the M1 to Buckinghamshire.

There is an all-Championship clash at the KC Stadium when Hull City looks to roar into the fourth round at the expense of Ipswich Town.

The FA Cup - let the underdogs bite

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says there is “no need” for peace talks ahead of his team’s home clash with Liverpool on 11 February

Liverpool want a board-level meeting with United to restore harmony following the Luis Suarez affair. But Ferguson said: “I do not see why there is any need for it.”

The Old Trafford match is likely to be Suarez’s first away match after his eight-game ban for racially abusing Patrice Evra.

The Uruguay striker faces severe treatment at Old Trafford and Liverpool want to reduce the offensive chants Suarez is likely to endure.

When questioned at the club’s press conference on Friday on reports that Liverpool would like peace talks, Ferguson said: “It is nice of them to do

it through the press.“You would have thought they

would come to Manchester United first. I do not see why there is any need for it but I have nothing to say about it.”

Relations between the two clubs have been at a low ebb and, while accepting the punishment of Suarez, Liverpool were unhappy with the decision. After Suarez issued an

apology - though not to Evra - for any offence his use of the word “negro” may have caused, Liverpool want to build bridges with United but are continuing discussions with the FA over an investigation process they believe was flawed.

United have said little on the entire matter, other than questioning Liverpool’s public statements prior to the hearing.

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Three members of the Canadian bobsledding team were hospitalised Thursday after their sled slammed into the roof of the track during a training run.

The crash took place as the Canadian team was practicing for a World Cup event in Altenberg.

“I’ve never seen a sled so destroyed in one go in my 32 years in the sport,” coach Tom de la Hunty told The Associated Press by telephone from the team’s hotel.

He said pilot Chris Spring was taken to the University Clinic in Dresden to have a piece of wood removed from his lower back. Pushman Bill Thomas was in another hospital in Dresden, and Graeme Rinholm was in a hospital in Pirna, closer to the track. A fourth member of the crew, Tim Randall, was not injured.

Thomas was under sedation and expected to “make a full recovery,” said de la Hunty, who did not have details on Rinholm’s injuries.

Although Randall was not injured, de la Hunty said he was in a “state of shock, really like all of us.”

De la Hunty said the “disastrous” crash took place in turn 16 of the track, often described as one of the most difficult in the world.

The sled, travelling at about 80 mph (130 kph), hit the wooden roof

over the course and came crashing back down, but never left the track.

“The entire front part of the sled came off and dragged through the sled with the athletes inside,” de la Hunty said.

The fourth World Cup stop of the season for bobsled and skeleton is scheduled to begin Friday in Altenberg, with men’s skeleton and women’s bobsledding competitions. Saturday’s schedule includes women’s skeleton and 2-man bobsledding, followed by the 4-man bobsledding event Sunday.

The 27-year-old Spring was born in Australia and represented that country in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics before switching to the Canadian team after that season. He applied for Canadian citizenship even before those Olympics formally ended, saying he was frustrated over the direction of the Australian program and what he described as a lack of funding. Australia pulled out of the four-man event in Vancouver after a series of crashes depleted the team’s roster and left two athletes with concussions.

It was at those Vancouver Games when safety again moved to the forefront of conversations about sliding sports. Georgian luge athlete Nodar Kumaritashvili crashed in a training run and died hours before the opening ceremony, his head

smashing into a metal beam after his body sailed over the track wall at nearly 90 mph when he lost control near the finish line.

Heavy snow fell in Altenberg for much of Thursday, and German officials released a statement in the morning saying the weather conditions forced the cancellation of that day’s scheduled skeleton training runs. In the same statement, they said a decision would be made later in the day about whether to allow bobsleds to take their practice runs.

By early afternoon, women’s bobsled training resumed with 12 sleds taking part. German officials later listed the men’s training for the day as “cancelled.”

“I’m sure the weather won’t impact us that much while we are here, or at least it won’t impact me,” Spring wrote on his blog Sunday. “Another new track and a tough one at that so I will be switched on for the best part of the week we are here and no doubt stressing out about all the little things us pilots like to worry about.”

Altenberg is notorious for being one of the most difficult tracks in the world to drive, and athletes for years have clamored for more practice time at the facility.

“The most technically difficult track on the circuit,” U.S. bobsled coach Brian Shimer once said of Altenberg, in former East Germany.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson insists his side will not panic after a 3-0 defeat at Newcastle.

The loss was United’s second in five days, coming after their shock 3-2 home defeat against Blackburn.

“We have the experience to cope, we need to get the show on the road,” said Ferguson, whose side are three points behind leaders Manchester City.

“It’s not a time for panic. Losing a game at this time of the year can sometimes happen.”

The Scot conceded that City were now in the driving seat at the top of the Premier League. Roberto Mancini’s side moved to 48 points after their 3-0 win over Liverpool on Tuesday.

“Advantage to them, of course,” admitted 70-year-old Ferguson.

The Old Trafford side will also be wary of third-placed Tottenham, who closed the gap to three points after their 1-0 victory over West Brom.

The London side will draw level on points with United if they win their game in hand against Everton next week.

The Magpies took the lead at the Sports Direct Arena through striker Demba Ba, before Yohan Cabaye added a magnificent second from a free-kick after the break.

Phil Jones’ own goal late in the match sealed a memorable win for Alan Pardew’s men.

“We started reasonably well,” added Ferguson, whose side face local rivals City in the FA Cup on Sunday.

“But they scored a fantastic goal and it really picked everyone up in the

stadium. The second was a killer for us.“The story of the game was they had

two fantastic strikes which put them in the driving seat.”

Pardew, meanwhile, believes the scoreline was a fair reflection of his side’s dominance.

“We won because we controlled the game in terms of what we wanted to do, we wouldn’t let them play,” said the Magpies boss, after the club recorded their first win over United since 2001.

“Physically and aerially we had an advantage. It was a great victory for us - we beat the champions 3-0 and we probably deserved that scoreline.

“You’ve got to have brave players who are going to push on - we had some outstanding performances individually.” Leading scorer Ba scored his 15th goal of the campaign to set the Magpies on their way, but will now head off to the Africa Cup of Nations to play for Senegal.

However, Pardew believes his side will cope with the loss.

“You see the guys who came off the bench contributed,” he added.

“Leon Best in particular stepped up to the plate when we lost Andy Carroll [to Liverpool in January 2011].

“We knew it was going to happen and we accept that.”
