A strand of uniquely shaped wooden beads intrigued me.

I was able to reproduce their form using two peyote-

These quick-to-make beaded beads require about tenminutes each, even for a beginner! The gorgeous,

self-supporting beads are stitched flat, then gathered

into beautifully rounded shapes. Make wire-wrapped

links to connect the beads with shiny silver chain.

or some reason I found myself thinking about

    pirate treasureSpanish gold, emeralds, and

pearls strewn in ocean sand among swaying

tendrils of seaweed, tiny jellyfish, and sea crea-

tures drifting along in the blue currents above. So I

dropped everything and leapt to my bead stash to try

out some experiments with cross-weaving polygons.

Tese polygons use the cross-weaving techniquerom the zigzag bracelet in the February/March2002 issue oBeadwork, but instead o alter-

nating the stringing sequence, you string thebeads consistently with the let needle. hebeadwork will curl into a circle resemblinga ships wheel, with spokes and a rim. BeadButtons result when you add a second layero spokes to a wheel. A hexagonal button willtend to be a fat disc shape, while a pentago-nal button will be more three-dimensional and bead-shaped.Step 1:Using 18" o thread and

    the let needle, string 1A,

1B, 1A, 1B, 1A, and 1B. Passback through the last beadwith the right needle. Slidethe beads to the center o thethread (Figure 1).

Beore I get completely o topic, lets talk about coveringa bead with beadweaving to make a beaded bead. Its aabulous way to turn ordinary wood beads into somethingspectacular, and these little peyote-stitch beading projectsusually dont take a lot o time to nish.

o make your own peyote-stitch-covered beaded bead, youllneed the ollowing tools and materials:

Round wood beads. Start with round beads at rst, sincetheir shape makes it easy to shape peyote stitch aroundthem. For this tutorial, I used a 20mm round wood beadthat I ound in an assortment rom my local crat supplystore.

A small strip o double-sided tape, also available at yourlocal crat supply store.

2 grams o Japanese cylinder beads, size 11o in color tomatch or contrast with your wood bead.

1 gram o size 15o seed beads in a color to match or con-trast with your cylinder beads.

Beading thread o your choice (6 lb Fireline recommended).

    Size 12 beading needle.

    Scissors or thread cutter.

Additional beads or embellishment, i desired: ringe beads, drops, daggers, bugle beads, or larger seed beads.

Lets get started! Heres how to cover your wood bead withpeyote stitch in ten easy steps:

This spectacular peyote stitch Bloomin' Bead was designed byCarol Dean Sharpe of Sand Fibers.

    1. ake a small strip o double-sided tape and wrap it aroundthe center o your wood bead. Tis will hold your rst ew

rows o peyote stitch securely in place and will also providean anchor or your nished peyote-stitched beaded bead.

Beaded beads are fascinating for so many reasons. Its more of that Zen-like quality ofbeadweaving for me: imagine making a bead out of beads! Where does one bead stop and thenext bead begin?

    2. Pick up an even number o cylinder beads. Always makesure you have an even number o beads beore stitching sothat your rows are even as you go. ubular even-count peyo-te stitch requires that little step up at the end o each round!

    3. Pass through the rst bead picked up again and pull snugly

so that you orm a tight ring around your wood bead on thedouble-sided tape.

    4. Start working in tubular even-count peyote stitch until thebeadwork starts to pull away a bit rom the wood bead. Youcan fip the bead over and work some peyote stitch on theother side to keep your tension even and tight.

    5. Stitch a size 15o seed bead in the rst stitch and then alter-nate cylinder beads and size 15o seed beads or one round.

    6. Add a size 15o in every stitch or two rounds.

    7. Stitch a size 15o in the rst stitch and then make adecrease. (Pass through the next 2 beads and pull snugly.)Repeat around.

    8. Pick up beads or netting: 1 size 15o, 1 cylinder bead, and 1size 15o. Pass through the next up bead in the round.

    9. Pass through the rst two beads added at the beginning othe previous round. Work peyote stitch through the cylin-der beads rom the previous step until the opening beginsto close up a little. Work peyote stitch or a total o threerounds.

    10. o secure the last row, pass through all the beads inthe round just added and pull . Weave your thread into thebeadweaving, tie a ew knots, weave in a bit more, and trim.Repeat or the other side o the beaded bead.

You can either leave your beaded bead as it is or add someancy beaded embellishment. ry covering your beadedbead with beaded netting, stitching a pattern o bugle beadsaround the center o the bead, or adding ringe beads ordaggers to the ends o your beaded bead. Te sky is the limit

when it comes to embellishing these little beauties!

A tip or maintaining even tension when working peyotestitch around this kind o beaded bead: when you passthrough the rst bead in Step 3, leave a thread tail that is ap-proximately one-hal the length o your beading thread. Tis

way, you can fip the bead over and work peyote stitch on theother side o the bead without having to add a new thread!

    techn iques

WireworkingTo make a simple loop, graspone end of the wire withround-nose pliers. Holdingon to the wire with one

hand, gently turn the pliersuntil the wire end and wirebody touch. Create a 90reverse bend where theymeet.

For a wire-wrapped loop, cut thedesired length of wire and makea 90 bend 2" from one end.Use round-nose pliers to hold thewire near the angle and bend theshort end up and around the pliersuntil it meets itself. Wrap the wiretightly down the neck of the wireto create a couple of coils. Trim theexcess to finish.

Tubular Peyote StitchString an even number of beads andmake a foundation circle by passingthrough them two more times, exiting from the first bead strung.

String 1 bead and pass through thethird bead of the foundation circle.String 1 bead and pass through thefifth bead of the foundation circle.Continue adding 1 bead at a time, skipping over 1 bead of the firstround, until you have added half thenumber of beads of the first round.Exit from the first bead of the secondround. String 1 bead, pass throughthe second bead added in the secondround, and pull thread tight. String 1

bead and pass through the third beadadded in the second round. Continuearound, filling in the spaces 1 beadat a time. Exit from the first beadadded in each round.

    Peyote Stitch Increase

Make a mid-project increase byworking a two-drop over a one-dropin one row. In the next row work aone-drop peyote between the two-drop. For a smooth increase, usevery narrow beads for both the two-drop and the one-drop between.

    Peyote Stitch Decrease

To make a mid-project decrease, simply pass thread through 2 beadswithout adding a bead in the gap.In the next row, work a regular one-drop peyote over the decrease. Keeptension taut to avoid holes.

Circular Peyote StitchString 3 beads and form the firstround by passing through the firstbead. For the second round, string2 beads and pass through thenext bead of the previous round;repeat twice. To step up for thenext round, pass through the firstbead of the current round. For the

third round, string 1 bead andpass through the next bead of theprevious round; repeat all around, then step up at the end of theround. Continue in this manner, alternating the two rounds. Youmay need to adjust the bead countdepending on the relative size ofthe beads in order to keep thecircle flat.

Netting (single thread)Begin by stringing a base row of 13beads. String 5 beads and go backthrough the fifth bead from theend of the base row. String another5 beads, skip 3 beads of the baserow, and go back through the next;repeat to the end of the row. Toturn, pass back through the last3 beads (one leg of the last net).

String 5 beads, pass back throughthe center bead of the next net andcontinue.
