Rep. LoBiondo is a Republican who represents all or parts of seven southern New Jersey counties, including Cumberland. He is a candidate for re-election in November. At the outset, because it was Flag Day, we asked the Congressman, who has previously sponsored legis- lation to prohibit desecration of the flag, where he stood on the issue of desecrating a national symbol versus first amendment protections for free speech. He said, “The men and women who put on the uniform view the flag as more than a symbol or piece of cloth; It’s part of the fabric of the country.” He noted that there are other limits on free speech such as not New Jersey Motorsports Park (NJMP), located at 8000 Dividing Creek Road in Millville, will host The All-American Race Weekend pre- sented by Global Barter Corporation, June 30 and July 1, featuring ARCA Racing Series present- ed by Menards, five supporting races and more. But Friday, June 29, it’s Cumberland County Residents’ Day. That’s when all residents (with proof of residency) will gain admission to NJMP for just $1 per person and $1 per vehicle parking. Attendees will also be able to enjoy $1 parade laps (in their own cars; registration required), $1 hot dogs and $1 soft drinks. It gets even better, with free admis- sion for kids 12 years of age and younger. Gates open at 10 a.m. and parade laps will begin at 12:30 p.m. Cumberland County-based businesses can have free ven- dor space during The All-American Race Weekend at NJMP (pre-registration required; contact [email protected]). The first 500 people who purchase a 2-Day ARCA event ticket will automatically be entered to win it (must be present to win/winner will be presented with scooter at end of ARCA race on Sunday, July 1, 2012)! Its development was not affect-ed when the formation of LandisTownship, recognized by state legislationin 1864, took with it territory that hadbelonged to Millville Township, includingVineland. It soon became incorporated asa city in 1866 and awaited the imminentarrival of one of its most renowned busi-nesses as well as its nickname. It was in 1852 that the birth of one ofMillvilles leading industrialists occurred, miles away in South Seaville. Thirty-twoyears later, Theodore C. Wheaton arrivedin this Cumberland County city to openup his business, but ironically not the onefor which he is celebrated today.According to William McMahons SouthJersey Towns, Wheaton had attendedPhiladelphia College of Pharmacy and theUniversity of Pennsylvania MedicalSchool. He established a drugstore at 18West Broad Street and worked as a physi-cian, soon adding a second pharmacy atHigh and Sassafras streets.McMahon reports that Wheaton devel-oped a friendship with William Shull andEugene Goodwin, owners of a glass factorywith an eight-pot furnace on the outskirtsof Millville. Its reasonable to assume thatShull and Goodwin provided the pharma-ceutical bottles used at Wheatons drugstores. When his friends business fell onhard times, the doctor loaned them severalthousand dollars.By 1888, McMahon explains, Wheatondecided to parlay his loan into an invest-ment and began overseeing the operationof the factory fulltime, replacing his med-ical profession with that of glassmaking.T.C. Wheaton and Co., as the business waschristened, apparently showed promiseearly on because its owner soon decidedto buy 25 square blocks in Millvilles thirdward for eventual expansion. The enter-prise would become the citys leadingindustry in the 20th century.Thirty years after T.C. Wheaton andCo. was established, a man by the name ofClarence Wolf was serving as MillvilleHigh School principal. He had arrivedyears earlier from Highspire,Pennsylvania, and worked his way up theladder in the citys public school system.Through an association with South Jerseybusinessman Burdette Tomlin, he wasoffered a partnership in a new endeavor, the Silica Sand Company, which washeadquartered in Millville. FollowingTomlins death shortly thereafter, Wolfleft the education field and became presi-dent of the company.According to McMahon, when thecompany expanded its facilities, land con-taining an abundance of holly trees need-ed clearing. Wolf decided to preserve thetrees by replanting them on another areaof Silica Sands property. During the 1926Christmas season, he came up with theidea of sending gift packages of holly tohis customers. The gesture soon blos-somed into a tradition, with Wolf doublinghis output.During the 1930s, a frost killed many ofthe holly trees on the company property, prompting Wolf to vow that such a catas-trophe would be avoided in the future. In1939, he created a holly orchard andcoaxed Gloucester County native andMillville vocational/agricultural teacherDaniel Fenton out of the education fieldand into the position of supervisor of thenew plantation. Before long, there were 16 varieties ofAmerican holly as well as English,Chinese and Japanese holly in theorchard. Over the years, the Holly House, constructed in the center of the farm, combined the two defining Millvilleemblems in the form of a collection ofholly glassware from around the world. The collection, McMahon reports, wascomprised of gifts sent to Wolf andFenton for their work, and featured anarray of designs of the holly leaves andberries. In recognition of his work, Wolf wasawarded an honorary Doctorate in Sciencein 1957 by his alma mater LafayetteCollege. When Wolf died at the age of 79in 1966, Fenton assumed control of boththe company and the farm. According toMcMahon, the holly plantation was soldto the American Holly Products Companyin 1971, marking the end of an era, butWolf had given the City of Millville anenduring symbol and nickname thatgraced many of the towns businessesand enterprises over the last half of the20th century.
