This year’s winter pub of the season is the Huntsman at Thurlstone. The Huntsmanhas been a firm favourite with CAMRA members for as long as I can remember and awinner of numerous awards and a Good Beer Guideregular entry.

Situated in the west of our area in the prettyvillage of Thurlstone this lovely roadside innoozes character and characters. The heart ofthe local community this thriving pub is afantastic asset to the village and a popularmeeting place to socialise and enjoy greatreal ale, music and food.

The job of running the pub has recentlybeen taken on by new landlady Sam whohad previously worked at the pub for a numberof years. Sam has already made some changessuch as increasing the opening hours, refurbishingthe internal decor and adding locally sourced PorkPies and homemade Scotch Eggs to the list of bar snacks. The bar dispenses up to six cask ales from local and national breweries and alsooffers a draught cider.

On hearing the news Sam was overjoyed and paid great thanks to her loyal army ofregular customers who make all the hard work worthwhile

The pub runs events throughout the week. Monday night is darts and dominoes.Tuesday night is quiz night & an Acoustic jam session on Wednesdays. On thesecond Thursday in every month there is an Irish folk night, and on the fourthThursday a Bluegrass night with live musicians. The pub also serves a popularSunday lunch as well as regular theme nights.

Barnsley CAMRA will be holding a presentation evening on Friday January 20th ataround 9pm. So please come along and help celebrate this fantastic community pub.Due to sparse public transport to the pub, Barnsley CAMRA will provide a minibus toand from the Huntsman. You must book your place on this bus with Margaret Croft(page 24) the return price being £4 per person. Barnsley CAMRA recently donated a set of 272 pub photos taken in 1995to the Tasker Trust who have a huge archive of old Barnsleyphotos available on theirwebsite. The Tasker collectionalready contained hundreds ofpictures of pubs going backmany years. There truly used tobe a pub on every corner in Barnsley town centre! Youcan find a gallery of the pub pictures here:www.taskertrust.co.uk/GalleryImagesofInterest.asp

Ted Tasker opened a photographic shop in New Street, Barnsley in 1948. He wasinterested in natural history and medieval church art, but when in the 1960s majorredevelopment of the town centre of Barnsley and surrounding housing areas wasproposed he set himself the task of recording the buildings which were about to belost. In order to understand the way use of the buildings had changed over time MrTasker researched the previous occupants of the shops and other town centrebuildings using directories and census records. This, of course, included all the pubsand provides a unique overview of the turnover of landlords from the 18th centuryonwards.

Here is an example of a pubwhich has been lost, theFriendship Inn which used tostand on the corner of AlbertStreet and New Street. The first series of ‘BarnsleyStreets’ books were printedfrom 1974 with a cover priceof £1.30. They now sell onAmazon and Ebay at around£15 a copy!

The Tasker Trust was established in1992 to preserve Mr Tasker’s work andto build upon it by collecting andadding more photographs to thisunique record of Barnsley. The Trustupdated and reprinted the books in fourvolumes in 2002 and they are stillavailable from the Barnsley Chronicleshop and online for £9.99 or £12.99 acopy or for considerably less as Kindleebooks. You can also borrow themfrom most Barnsley library branches.

The Trust also give illustrated talksbased on their ever growing collectionof 6000+ local photographs.

Getting people out and about into theirlocal, or not so local pubs and clubs iswhat this new article is all about. In the lastedition we enjoyed a trip to Mapplewell, today were off up Summer lane andPogmoor. We catch the number 43 Stagecoach Busfrom Barnsley Interchange. I have made thisa Saturday Trip so the pubs are open duringthe afternoon.Buses leave the Interchange at 25 and 55mins past the hour until 6.55pm then thingschange. A £3.30 day ticket covers the wholeroute given, but a £4 day ticket could get youfrom home (Ask a Stagecoach Driver). Our first call(s) are from the same stop onSummer Lane, just 4 mins into the journey.Alight at Newton Street for the Commercialand the Moulders Arms. The Commercial on Summer Lane is apopular lively family owned pub offeringthree real ales. One is Tetley Bitter and theother 2 can vary from being local beers fromBradfield, Abbeydale etc to being Durhambeers. The pub is popular with Pool andDarts players. The pub is just one room butoffers separate drinking areas. After your visit cross the road ontoSummer Street and into the MouldersArms. The Moulders Arms is again a oneroomed local which offers (currently) one realale, and what an ale … Theakston's OldPeculiar is the choice here. The pub is open-plan but has three distinct drinking areasserved by the small bar. A garden provides asecure drinking area for the family. The nameof the pub is derived from its proximity tothe Old Foundry. When you’re ready walk back to the bus

stop and the next bus will take you up theroad for two stops where you alight at

Welbeck Street and the Polish Club. The Polish Club was planning a fewalterations on my recent visit so it will beinteresting to see what’s changed in sixweeks, talks of walls being removed andopening up redundant rooms etc. The club isa club in name, it hosts rock nights over theweekends and has hosted many charity rockgigs. The club offers one cask ale and thistends to go on on a Friday, and when it’sgone it’s gone. A popular beer here isRobinsons Trooper but Stancill Brewerybeers are seen here often. The one room used by drinkers has a pooltable, dartboard and TV screen as well as thebar, but as we go to print, things may, or maynot have changed. So back to the bus stop and another shortishjourney round to Pogmoor.Alight after three stops at Glendale Close, just past the petrol station on the right. Here across the road you will see the pub,

Tom Treddlehoyle. The small bar hereserves this busy community local. Thoughthe pub is open plan it has a separate roomatmosphere. A conservatory area at the rearacts as a function room for small partys andmeetings. This leads to quite a large kidfriendly garden which is popular in thesummer months.Heading back, you have a choice of catchingthe 43 bus round to Kingstone, about 15mins to town (there are no more real alepubs on the route) or catch a 44 bus back

down Summer Lane and into town, about 6mins.

The world of beer turns and churns atamazing speed. My last two pieces have beenabout the buzz beers of the moment, IPA andsaison. They are still being brewed and theformer has truly become a global brewingphenomenon. But those two styles have been joined by abeer with both a challenging name as well astaste: sour. Do you want to drink beer thatmakes your tongue curl? It seems manydrinkers do and there’s no shortage of brewerson both sides of the Atlanticwho are producing theirinterpretations of sour.I like the style and there’s nodoubt they make excellentsummer refreshers. Theyhave a natural fizz andsparkle, and the versions thathave had an addition of fruit –more often than not cherriesor raspberries – beat pink Champagne far intothe long grass as far as my tastes areconcerned. But I’m unhappy with the term sour, which Ithink is misleading. These beers are based onthe lambic and gueuze beers produced in thePajottenland region of Belgium. They are theoldest style of beers in existence, made by wildor spontaneous fermentation, using notcarefully stored brewers’ yeast cultures, butspores in the atmosphere. The method of production is fascinating. Amash of malted barley and wheat is boiled withhops that have been allowed to age as thebrewers are not looking for too muchbitterness. The liquid is then pumped into opentrays in the attics and left overnight.Wild yeasts float in through open windowsand attack the sugars in the liquid. Oncefermentation is under way, the liquid istransferred to oak tuns obtained from wine orport makers and left for months or severalyears, during which time microflora trapped in

the wood continue the fermentation.Lambic is the beer served straight from thetuns, while a blend of old and young lambics isknown as gueuze. The beers are vinous, cidery and tart – but they are not sour. When Ivisited one of the most revered producers oflambic, Frank Boon, he was adamant on this.Frank is based in the small village of Lembeek, which gives its name to the style. It’s taken soseriously by its practitioners that the villagehas boasted a guild of brewers since the 15thcentury and stages an annual pilgrimage to theshrine of the patron saint of lambic brewers,Saint Veronus.“My beers are not sour,” Frank told meemphatically as we stood in a long hall packedwith giant wooden tuns or foudres. “They areacidic – like French Champagne.”The comparison is a sound one. The driestversion of Champagne, known as Brut, has anacidic character that’s not to everyone’s taste. As a result, Champagne makers add sugar totake the edge off the acidity. The amount ofsugar can range from two to 10 per cent. It’s a similar story with lambic. The once-

most popular version of thestyle, called faro, has anaddition of candy sugar. Farois now hard to find as mostdrinkers of lambic and gueuzeprefer it without sugar. But fruitlambics, while still acidic, dohave a hint of sweetness fromfructose – fruit sugar. Most of the sour beers being

brewed in the US and Britain are not made inthe traditional lambic fashion. The brewersobtain samples of the main wild yeast –brettanomyces – used in lambic brewing anduse it in their fermenting vessels. If you would like to see true lambic beingmade, then visit the Cantillon brewery inBrussels, which is a short stroll from theEurostar station Brussels Midi (cantillon.be).For €7, you can tour the brewery, see the opentrays in the attic, visit the hall of foudres andthen taste the amazing beers, includingstraight lambic, cherry and raspberry lambicsand the rare faro. But best not to ask for a sour beer.

Everything you see will bringa smile to your face and you'll findyourself laughing out loud as well. It'sgreat to go round and see all thecomedians / writers / shows that arecommemorated, and guess whatcomedian or show they are from.Great mix of old and new quotes, ones you remember and halfremember and have never heardbefore.Pictured left is a photograph of thepavement which mentions a wellknown brewery.Picture sent in by Wayne Barker

Welcome Inside Barnsley CAMRA’s BAR - Page 20

Ubiquitous citrus - lemon peel

Citrus flavours continue to be popularespecially in craft beer, perhaps a developmentfrom the slice of lime that used to be stuffedinto a beer bottle. Interestingly zest also meansenergy & passion.

I impulse bought a bottle of Yuzu juice, aJapanese citrus fruit derived from bittermandarins. It is used as a flavouring in Doritos, some American artisan ciders as well as theCzech cider produced by Zubr brewery. Thisappears to be a mix of beer, cider & applejuice. Phew! Since the C18 the Japanese havebathed with Yuzu juice on the winter solstice toguard against colds. (21 Dec 16)

This summer, I visited the Noilly Prat(vermouth) distillery in southern France and Ipicked up some tips. A strip of peel modifiesthe taste of a drink without the acidity of a slice. They used lemon, lime or grapefruit which wasunexpectedly good. They also twisted a spiralof peel which was rubbed on the outer & innerrim of the glass, oil pores next to the glass. Theflavour being passed to my mouth & to thedrink simultaneously. Squeezed & empty halflemons freeze well and are easy to zest.I love the combination of lemon, fresh herbsand pulses. 2016 is the UN year of the pulse(seeds within pods -beans, peas & lentils) Inthe UK, they are associated with hippies, poorfood and wind but they are the oldest globalfood being tasty, healthy and very good for soilquality. Without pulses there would be no soysauce, chilli con carne, hummus, Indian dahl, cassoulet, pea & ham soup etc. Lemon, beetroot and lentil saladwith cheese. This salad is better than it sounds and is lovelywarm as a main course with or without meat. Itis more of a vegetable dish than a salad. I tookthe cold leftovers to work instead of asandwich. I love warm, freshly cooked beetrootand it is easy to cook so long as you neverpierce the skin to check if it is cooked andalways twist off the leaves rather than pulling orcutting which causes the flesh to bleed and

become pink. Decent quality leaves can beused in soups & salads in the same way asspinach. I cook beetroot in my slow cooker fora couple of hours until it is just soft to touch.Alternatively microwave each beetroot with 1tbs of water in a covered dish for 5 minutes. The halloumi can be replaced with anothercheese such as brie or Wensleydale but do notgrill it.

2 cooked beetroot – cubed (Warm)130g puy or brown lentils – cooked with 1 finelychopped onion. (Drained & warm)2 preserved lemons cut into wedges150g grilled halloumi cheese – roasted /dryfried & cubedSalad dressing of chopped herbs e.g. mint, chives, parsley plus olive oil, wine vinegar &lemon zest. Use plenty of herbs and season totaste. (Optional 1 tsp Sumac - North Africanlemon tasting spice)

Mix the salad ingredients scattering the cheeseon the top then dress with the salad dressing.
