Airport walkway callA CAIRNS councillor hascalled on Cairns Airport andthe State Government to builda footpath linking the city toairport after the death of a ped-estrian last month.
Dinah Boughton died dur-ing an early morning walkwhile crossing the road to ac-cept a lift. She was struck by anoncoming car.
“Nothing can bring backDinah Boughton, but we can
prevent further tragedies byensuring essential infrastruc-ture is put in place so accidentslike this never happen again,”Cr Richie Bates said.
“Cairns Airport is right nextto our city centre and manypeople choose to walk to andfrom the airport as a matter ofconvenience and as an activetransport alternative.
“At present there is no re-liable pathway on Airport Av-
enue and pedestrians arerisking their lives walking onthe side of the road.
“The problem is muchworse at night with insufficientlighting on the busy road,” CrBates said.
“With a cycleway and foot-path already in place alongLake St, this represents an ex-cellent opportunity tofully connect the airport tothe CBD.”
Cr Bates said the city centrewas growing rapidly with de-velopments such as Aspial andthe CQUniversity campus andthe airport access “must movewith the times and cater for theincreased levels of demand”.
“A diverse transport strat-egy that caters for private, pub-lic and active modes is the keyto moving people safely, ef-ficiently and with real econ-omic benefits.”

Foreign buyers help lift demandfor range of Gold Coast optionsA SURGE in foreign invest-ment and an increase inbuyer demand for commer-cial asset classes on the GoldCoast have significantlyboosted sales in the regionover the past 12 months, ac-cording to research conduct-ed by Ray White Commer-cial.Ray White Commercialhead of research VanessaRader said the Gold Coasthadwitnessed somewhat of arevival during 2014 on thebackof low interest rates, im-proved business sentimentand increased infrastructureinvestment.

City seeks recognitionPolitical and business leaders call on state MPs to appoint special Coast minister
ANDREW POTTSCOUNCIL REPORTER
CITY leaders want the GoldCoast to get special recog-nition in the next state cabinet, with support growing for aGlitter Strip “ministry”.
Gold Coast city councillorsand business heads are lobby-ing State MPs from both majorparties for the next premier toalso be a “special minister forthe Gold Coast” to boost the
region’s profile ahead of the2018 Commonwealth Games.
With Labor likely to formgovernment without a singleGold Coast MP in its ranks, there are fears the Gold Coastcould be left “out in the cold”politically.
City finance boss WilliamOwen-Jones said the state’ssecond-biggest city deservedits own ministry, particularlywith the Games only threeyears away.
“Regardless of who the next
premier is, I would welcomethe idea of (the premier) alsohaving the position of specialminister for the Gold Coast,”Cr Owen-Jones said.
“We have 10 members hereon the Gold Coast and we can-not be out in the wilderness.
“The premier and specialminister could obviously havean office set up at the South-port CBD or at the BroadwaterParklands.”
The Southport CBD officesare occupied by city councillor
Dawn Crichlow and MayorTom Tate, who spends half hisweek there.
The historic Art Deco build-ing, the council’s originalchambers, has several meetingrooms and offices.
The idea is not without pre-cedent – Anna Bligh was re-garded as the unofficial GoldCoast minister during the earlyyears of the Beattie era beforethe 2001 Labor landslidebrought seven new local mem-bers into parliament.
While the make-up of theLNP’s leadership team re-mains unknown, the idea is un-likely to gain any traction withLabor, which has promised tocut cabinet posts from 19 to 14.
“I just cannot see the newpremier singling out the GoldCoast because I am sure theother cities would take of-fence,” Cr Crichlow said.
“However, I do think ifLabor gets into office theyshould halt the sale of the oldhospital site, sell off the Taj
Mahal building in Brisbaneand instead move a govern-ment department down here.
“We would love to have theDepartment of Sports and Rec-reation on the Gold Coast forthe Commonwealth Games.”
The position of Gold CoastCommonwealth Games Minis-ter was created by the BlighGovernment in 2011 and washeld by Ms Bligh.
Currumbin MP Jann Stuck-ey held the portfolio during theNewman Government.
