Chapter 1. Overview 1.1 Overview

Thanks for using the panel meter by Sure Electronics. Please read this manual carefully prior to the installation of panel meter. As an innovative measuring device of the ME-SP03X series panel meter, been widely accepted by most of the buyers of Sure Electronics since its release, ME-SP037B is a high-efficient, flexible yet special digital voltmeter. Its A/D module is of a successive approximation type which makes the A/D conversion fast and accurate. Its self-adaptation ability to ambient brightness makes it an ideal choice in many applications. The most distinct feature of this panel meter is the flexibility that allows you to customize the display output based on inputted DC 0-10V. Users can rescale the displayed output values according to actual requirements. The range of display is any digit between 0-9999. FIGURE 1-1 OVERVIEW

In industrial process control systems, parameters like weight, mass, temperature, humidity, velocity, speed, pressure, voltage, and current those describe the physical or chemical properties of a substance can be converted to industrial transfer standard-compliant DC 0-10V signal with the help of various pre-circuits. However, the actual chemical or physical values cannot be displayed intuitively. Now, the rescalability feature which makes ME-SP037B different from traditional panel meters helps engineers, technicians and pros eliminate their worries. Users can rescale panel meters of ME-SP037B with proprietary software to cater for applications that require direct industrial readings display instead of merely a voltage output ranging from 0-10V.

Overview

Note:

1. As shown in the above schematic, the positive and negative leads of DC power supply are connected with VCC (+) and GND (-) respectively. The positive and negative leads of voltage to be measured are connected with VIN+ and VIN- of panel meter respectively. Panel meter will display redefined values.

2. GND and VIN- share the same ground in this panel meter. 3. NO MORE BURNED OUT METERS should you hook up the power leads

2. Pay more attention to the positive and negative of VIN+ and VIN- when wiring. 1.4 Product Features

The brightness of the diode varies with the change of ambient brightness and won’t be too dazzling in night time. Adapted to the Ambient Brightness The brightness of diode will reach its topmost when the panel meter is in a room under direct sunlight exposure.

The brightness of the diode is comparatively high when the panel meter is placed in a room, around which the environment is similar to dawn, nightfall or cloudy weather.

Overview

The brightness of the diode is the darkest when the panel meter is placed in an environment of almost no light from outside.

Slowly Adjust the Brightness of Diode

When the ambient environment of panel meter is shifted from light to dark or dark to light, the brightness of diode will be gradually changed and whole process will last for 4-6 seconds. The adjustment of brightness is smooth and it won’t make people feel abrupt.

Chapter 2. Preparations

The following of this guide will detail the steps to rescale a panel meter, including preparations, test process and finally the application. Please follow the instructions carefully. Prior to the use of panel meter of ME-SP037B, please check the package contents carefully. The package of ME-SP037B contains the following:

Note: Item 2, 4 and 5 are useful only when a panel meter is to be rescaled and users

can rescale the panel meter many times. As for the software that is required for rescaling the panel meter, they are available and can be downloaded.

CP2102 driver

2.1 Install CP2102 Driver CP2102 driver helps establish the communication channel between panel meter (item 1) and users’ PC with the help of USB-RS232 converter (item 2), so it must be installed first. The full name of CP2102 driver downloaded is “CP210x_VCP_Win2K_XP_S2K3.exe”. Double-click it and the following will be displayed:

Click “I accept the terms of the license agreement” and “Next >” to continue installation.

Preparations

Click “Browse…” to specify the path that CP2102 driver is to be installed if necessary. Otherwise, click “Next >” to proceed.

Click “Install” to start installation. It may take a few seconds for installation to complete and the following will pop up after the installation:

Click “Finish” to complete the installation of CP2102 driver.

2.2 Install 037.rar Unzip “037.rar” after downloading from the link and you will find an exe file named “ME-SP037.exe” which you can directly run without any installation.

Note: You may run “ME-SP037.exe” when you are sure that the connection of panel

meter (item 1) and USB-RS232 converter (item 2) has been established. 2.3 Connections

2.3.1 Power On Self Test Power On Self Test is a preliminary step to test the function of ME-SP037B. When you open the package of panel meter itself, you will see a white 4-pin header like shown below:

Preparations

As clearly shown in the above snapshot, pins on the header are marked as “VCC”,”GND”,”VIN+” and ”VIN-” (from left to right), in which “VCC” and ”GND” shall be connected with the positive (+) and negative (-)of DC power supply and ”VIN+” and ”VIN-” shall be connected with voltage signal to be measured. ME-SP037B is pre-rescaled to display in a range from 0 to 1000, so if the voltage measured is DC 5V, ME-SP037B will display “500” on the panel meter. If ME-SP037B is able to display the voltage correctly, it means it can function well. Note: The allowed voltage of the DC power supply is DC 8.5-30V and DO pay more

attention to the polarity when making connection with the DC power supply. 2.3.2 Connect Panel Meter Board with Dupont Cable To rescale ME-SP037B, you will need to: Remove the rear cover of the plastic housing. Detach the board with the plastic housing by unscrewing like shown below:

Before connecting panel meter board and USB-RS232 converter, find your 6-pin Dupont cable that comes with the package of ME-SP037B. The construction of the Dupont cable is as follows: 1

At the first glance, the cable looks peculiar since lead 3 is null and lead 4 and 6 are interconnected. All other leads are marked with different colors, so you can distinguish them when connecting with panel meter board. Make sure the following leads of Dupont cable DO connect with the following pins of panel meter board when you secure the connector of Dupont cable with the header: Lead 1 (Green) <----------------------------------> Pin RX (Pin 7) Lead 2 (Yellow) <----------------------------------> Pin TX (Pin 6) Lead 5 (Black) <----------------------------------> Pin GND (Pin 3) So when you finally establish the connection of Dupont cable and header of panel meter board, pin 1 of panel meter board is supposed to have left disconnected. Note:

1. To unscrew the board of ME-SP037B, you may use a 1.0mm screwdriver or preferably an Allen key.

2. If you cannot find the 7-pin header on the board, contact us immediately. Our contact info is attached in chapter 6.

2.4 Connect with USB-RS232 Converter

Since we have stripped off the plastic sheath on other ends of leads 1, 2 and 5, the next would be to connect them with USB-RS232 converter. The following is an up-close of one of the black terminal blocks of USB-RS232 converter, in which pin “GND”, “RXD” and “TXD” are to be connected with lead 5,2 and 1 of Dupont cable respectively:

2.5 Connect USB-RS232 Converter with PC via USB Cable As the final step before ME-SP037B can be rescaled, connect converter with your PC via USB cable (item 5) that is offered with ME-SP037B.

Chapter 3. Application 3.1 Edit Start-up Display

You can re-edit the startup displaying contents according to your own discretion. Both upper case and lower case letters are allowed and the maximum number of letters or digitals is 8. This panel meter will dynamically display the contents you entered. It will start progress leftwards on an interval of 1 second and will go to normal working status after displaying for 5 seconds. Due to the performance limitation of 7-segment LED, some letters or digitals are displayed with special segment construction. You may refer to the appendix for the letters-digits table. The default display is “SURESURE”.

3.2 Rescale Value Output Initially, the display is specified at a range of 0-1000 and that display range can be modified according to the requirements of users. We offer tailored development software and two setting methods and either one of them requires only a simple setting. Run “ME-SP037.exe” after you unzip it from 037.rar when the connection of ME-SP037B and your PC is successfully established. Following is the snapshot after running:

As shown above, the “Com” drop-down list allows you to select the COM port that panel meter communicates with PC installed with CP2102 driver. Normally, when you connect panel meter with your PC, a COM port will automatically be specified so that you can rescale your panel meter with software ME-SP037. You may verify the COM port number before selecting from the above drop-down list by the following steps: a) My Computer->Properties->Hardware->Device Manager->Ports (COM & LPT) b) Select a COM port from the above drop-down list and click “OK” to proceed. c) You may click “HELP” link to view the help document to know more info. The next page after you select the COM port actually tells us there are totally two different ways to rescale a ME-SP037B panel meter:

As displayed in the above snapshot, the first is y=ax+b mode, a function that allows you to specify a and b so that voltage x measured will first be rescaled into y before it can be displayed on panel meter. So you will need to specify only “a” and “b” in the following page:

Fill in the blanks of Ratio (a) and offset (b) and click “OK” when finished. e.g.: enter 0-10V DC, display 0-2400 Obviously we know that a=2.4 and b=0 Panel meter can readily be reconfigured to display target values after entering the above values. You may also click “Prev” to have a try on another mode to rescale panel meter ME-SP037B. The blank of “Greeting” allows you to specify the display on power-up. The default is “SURESURE”, which you can see it when the panel meter is powered. Note:

1. set coefficient “a” Range that users can enter: -9.999—9.999

2. set offset “b” Range that user can enter: -9999—9999

Application 3. X is the initial display value, x relating to DC 0-10V is 0-1000. 4. Though the above range is allowed, if “y” (value to be displayed) exceeds the

range of 0-9999 after calculation, panel meter will display “Err”.

The second mode: As in the page of step 2, click the second mode and “next” button to view the setting page like shown below:

The second would be to fill in two sets of x and y-(x1 y1) & (x2 y2) so that “a” and “b” can be calculated. Following is an example: Y1=ax1+b Y2=ax2+b, in which x1=2, y1=30 (x1 y1 as the first set of start point and End point) x2=8,y2=90 (x2 y2 as the second set of start point and End point) So that “a” and “b” can be calculated easily as shown below: a =10, b=10 Hence, the function that ME-SP037B follows to rescale is” Y=10x+10 Click “OK” when you complete the setting. You may try to measure voltage and compare the readings with the reading before rescaling. Note: Sure Electronics can also help you configure the panel meter if you expect to

avoid the inconveniences of configuration. No tools or tailored software will be needed.
