Korea is one of the top countries in Cancer Treatment which includes performing the most complex opera-

tions and researching cancer studies constantly. Thanks to the tremendous national efforts to eradicate

cancer, the overall 5-year survival rate for cancer patients treated in Korea has been steadily increasing

and was up to 64.1% most recently. Comparing to other medically-advanced countries in the world,

clinical outcomes of cancer patients in Korea are better Medical services provided at Korean hospitals are

now competing with the world's best hospitals in all aspects including healthcare systems, facilities as

well as treatment techniques.

The Most AdvancedMedical Technology

Korea provides a high-quality medical services by utilizing state-of-the-art equipments for cancer treatment in order to

promote trust in the treatment and improve the quality of life with the objective of "living a normal life during precision

cancer treatment with minimum side effects“.

1. Proton Therapy The protons from radiation selectively attack cancer cells to

minimize normal-tissue damage and harmful side effects. This novel therapy is only

available at Korea's National Cancer Center as well as 28 other hospitals in the

world. Moreover, the number of international cancer patients travelling to Korea

has been increasing since the treatment fees in Korea are as low as one-fifth of

those in USA.

3. Da Vinci Surgery The use of this minimally-invasive robotic surgery is flourishing

in Korea. Consequently, Korea has earned a reputation as the "Mecca" of robotic

surgery in the world. Furthermore, Korean hospitals run robotic surgery training

centers where a large number of doctors across the world visit annually to observe

technological advancements.

2. Cyberknife The most advanced medical device selectively tracks and removes

cancerous tissues without surgical operation, taking organ movement and

breathing of the patient into consideration. The cost of this treatment in Korea

is one-third of that in USA.

Unparalleled CancerCare Process and Infrastructure

Korean Cancer Centers lead the world in terms of their top tier infrastructure for patient care in designing individually

tailored cancer treatments, building optimal cancer care delivery systems, driving international cooperation and sharing

advanced medical technologies via training programs.

1. Cancer Center

We reorganized our cancer care system to be more disease-centered by establishing

cancer centers so that all relevant faculties of departments are involved in making

treatment decisions more promptly. The center provides one-stop system of full

support for prevention, examination, treatment, rehabilitation and aftercare. In

Korea, most university hospitals and high-level general hospitals including govern-

ment-designated 12 local cancer centers provide the world's top cancer treatments.

2. Multidisciplinary Approach

Our world-renowned multidisciplinary care teams of medical oncologists,

radiation therapists and other cancer specialists work closely together under one

roof to provide truly dedicated cancer treatments.

3. Fast Track System

When a patient is diagnosed with cancer or is referred from cooperating community hospitals, a multidisciplinary

team from the cancer center confirms the examination results, verifies the patient's status, plans the treatment,

arranges for additional examinations if needed. The team admits to initiate the treatment within 1 to 2 weeks depending

on the status of the patient and the waiting time is considerably reduced this way.

Patient Testimonials- Hear from our patients and learn about their experiences -

Whole breast has to be removed?

Ms. al-Zawahri, 42, living in Abu Dhabi, the capital of UAE, was diagnosed

with breast cancer in April, 2012. Having assumed it is not a big deal as

long as surgery is successful, she was bewildered after hearing all her breast

tissue had to be removed. Must she remove her whole breast? Is there any

other treatment option?

The First Patient Received from UAE, Health Authority -

Abu Dhabi

Health Authority-Abu Dhabi recommended her hospitals from many countries

where breast cancer can be treated without having mastectomies and she

chose to head to Korea for its high-quality medical service and beautiful

environment. Thus, she became the very first patient under the patient-ex-

change contract between Health Authority-Abu Dhabi and Korea.

Committed to Treatment from the Moment of Admission

Ms. Al-Zawahri, having received a breast conserving cancer operation in

Ewha Womans University Cancer Center For Women (EWUCC), said she

could be committed to the treatment thanks to the efficient system and

kind medical staff. She was especially satisfied with EWUCC, Korea's first

hospital for women only, with Center of Excellence in Women's Health and

Lady's ward for women's cancer patients.

Came only for the surgery yet Went with additional

chemotherapy

With trust in Korean treatment procedure of breast cancer and satisfaction

of operation outcome removing cancer cells without removing whole

breast, Ms. al-Zawahri decided to extend her stay in Korea and receive an

additional chemotherapy. Beautiful and healthy as she used to be, she

returned to her country leaving a thank-you message to EWUCC and Abu

Dhabi Health Authority for her new life.

Visited Korea to treat breast cancer without breast removal

Patient Exchange Contract with Health Authority - Abu

Dhabi

Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the UAE, sends out around 3,000 patients

who cannot be treated within the nation to other countries. At the end of

2011, UAE Health Authorities visited Korean hospitals then agreed to send

UAE patients to Korea after witnessing excellence in Korean medicine.

Therefore, 24-year-old Sara Saad Ghaly Saad from Egypt, an acute lympho-

blastic leukemia patient, visited Korea for the first time through the

contract and was referred to Seoul St. Mary's Hospital's International

Healthcare Center where Bone Marrow Transplantation Center is

specifically operated.

Unrelated Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Transplantation

Performed

She received unrelated peripheral blood stem cell transplantation(surgery

to transplant unrelated donor's peripheral blood stem cell) on April 10th.

After being closely monitored for 10 days and confirmed to have no

complications found, she was prepared against Graft versus host disease.

Graft versus host disease is a rare but fatal condition after bone marrow

transplantation, so its prevention is vital. Sara recovered gradually and

returned to her country, satisfied with the successful operation outcome

and the care provided by the staff for her.

Total Hip Replacement Arthroplasty in the middle of the

Examination

After her arrival on February 12th, 2013, Sara was found to have a broken

hip joint from her whole-body examination for bone marrow transplant.

Since it was imminent situation with emergency operation warranted, the

examination was immediately paused and total hip replacement arthroplas-

ty was completed with orthopedic department through the multidisci-

plinary system in Seoul St. Mary's hospital. Thanks to early diagnosis and

multidisciplinary approach, she had no complications and prepared to

proceed to the bone marrow transplantation after a week of rest.
