GRAMMAR – CHECK HW

LET’S GO OVER THE GRAMMAR HOMEWORK P.75 B3 & B5 & EXTRA PRACTICE HANDOUT

USING THE PAST CONTINUOUSUse the past continuous to talk about activities that were in progress at a specific time.• I was sleeping at 6 am.• I was working at 8 pm.• I was watching the sun set at 9.

PAST CONTINUOUS USESThe past continuous is often used to talk about several activities that were in progress at the same time.• When my mother called, I was washing

dishes and my brother was reading a book.

• When the sun set, I was watching it and taking pictures.

• I was watching the final game and cleaning the house yesterday.

Past Continuous vs Simple PastExpresses an ongoing past activity that may or may not be

completed. In contrast, the simple past usually expresses a completed past activity.

Past Continuous

• May or may not be completed

I was reading a book ten minutes ago.At 11 am, we were studying. It was getting hot.

Simple Past

• CompletedI read that book.I studied. It was hot.

STATIVE VERBS AND PAST CONTINUOUS

• Many stative verbs are used in the simple present but not in past continuous, such as know, own, mean, seem, and understand.

I knew him. (I was knowing home) XI owned a house. (I was owning a house) XHe seemed angry. (He was seeming angry) X

Simple Past and Past ContinuousSome stative verbs are used in past continuous but they are used as action verbs and have a different meaning, such as

have, think, taste, and weigh.

Simple Past

• I had a cat.• I thought it was Friday.• The food tasted weird.

Past Continuous

• I was having a party.• I was thinking about him.• I was tasting the food.

WRITING- TOPIC SENTENCES

WHAT MAKES A GOOD TOPIC SENTENCE GOOD? LET’S LOOK AT THE FEATURES AND THINK ABOUT IF YOUR TOPIC SENTENCES HAVE THESE FEATURES.

WRITING- TOPIC SENTENCES

1. IT CONTROLS OR GUIDES THE WHOLE PARAGRAPH.

When reading the topic sentence you should know what to expect. You should know what you are going to read about.

WRITING- TOPIC SENTENCES

1. IT CONTROLS OR GUIDES THE WHOLE PARAGRAPH.

For example…Cats and dogs make great pets for the elderly.

I know that if I keep reading I will learn about WHY cats and dogs make great pets for the elderly.

WRITING- TOPIC SENTENCES

1. IT CONTROLS OR GUIDES THE WHOLE PARAGRAPH.

Think about your writing. Do your topic sentences control or guide the whole paragraph?

WRITING- TOPIC SENTENCES

2. A GOOD TOPIC SENTENCE IS NOT A GENERAL FACT THAT EVERYONE ACCEPTS AS TRUE.

For example, a bad topic sentence would be, “Libraries have books”. We know this is true and is not really an opinion. It’s not a good choice for a topic sentence.

WRITING- TOPIC SENTENCES

2. A GOOD TOPIC SENTENCE IS NOT A GENERAL FACT THAT EVERYONE ACCEPTS AS TRUE.

A better topic sentence would be:“Libraries are great resources of technology.”

WRITING- TOPIC SENTENCES

3. A GOOD TOPIC SENTENCE IS SPECIFIC.

“Tea is delicious.” is not a good topic sentence? Why? It is too general. The reader does not know what to expect in the paragraph.

A better topic sentence for a paragraph about tea would be, “Green tea has many health benefits”. Now we know what kind of tea and something interesting about it.

WRITING- TOPIC SENTENCES

3. A GOOD TOPIC SENTENCE IS SPECIFIC.

“Baseball is exciting.” (General or specific?)

“The batter in baseball is an important player in the game.” (general or specific)

WRITING- TOPIC SENTENCES

3. A GOOD TOPIC SENTENCE IS SPECIFIC.

Are your topic sentences general or specific?

WRITING- TOPIC SENTENCES

4. YET, A TOPIC SENTENCE IS NOT TOO SPECIFIC.

You don’t want to say everything right away! For example:“The drink Coca Cola has 300 calories and is made of sugar and water.” There is nothing else more to talk about here. I can’t really make a topic out of this.

WRITING- TOPIC SENTENCES

4. YET, A TOPIC SENTENCE IS NOT TOO SPECIFIC.

“Popcorn is made by putting the corn in a pan, then turning on the stove to medium and waiting for 5 minutes.” This is TOO specific. Let’s change it to:“Popcorn is easy to make with only a few steps”. What are those steps?

WRITING- TOPIC SENTENCES

4. YET, A TOPIC SENTENCE IS NOT TOO SPECIFIC.

Are your topic sentences TOO specific?

WRITING- TOPIC SENTENCES

5. A GOOD TOPIC SENTENCE HAS CONTROLLING IDEAS

Controlling ideas are words or phrases that help guide the flow of ideas in the paragraph.

WRITING- TOPIC SENTENCES5. A GOOD TOPIC SENTENCE HAS CONTROLLING IDEAS

The best season for kids is winter. Kids love to play in the snow and make snowmen. They also love to catch snowflakes and eat them. Finally, kids love to have snowball fights together. …

The controlling idea is “best season for kids”

WRITING- TOPIC SENTENCES5. A GOOD TOPIC SENTENCE HAS CONTROLLING IDEAS

The best season for kids is winter. The controlling idea is “best season for kids” because we want to know more why it is the best season for kids … what if it is said, “The worst season for adults is winter.” We would want to know why it’s the worst.

WRITING- TOPIC SENTENCES5. A GOOD TOPIC SENTENCE HAS CONTROLLING IDEAS

Controlling ideas are very important. It sets up what the person is going to read. Do your topic sentences have a controlling idea?

WRITING- TOPIC SENTENCES5. A GOOD TOPIC SENTENCE HAS CONTROLLING IDEAS

Let’s practice more with the controlling idea – see handout

WRITING- TOPIC SENTENCES

YOU WILL GET A SET OF SENTENCES …

Work with your group to circle the best topic sentence. In that sentence underline the controlling idea – be prepared to share with the class.

READING – UNIT 3A REVIEW

LET’S REVIEW KEY PARTS OF UNIT 3A - HANDOUT

READING – MAIN IDEA PRACTICE

LOOK BACK TO THE READING ON P.37 - 38

Let’s work on making main ideas for each paragraph – do you remember how?

READING – MAIN IDEA

• The main idea is the central, or most important, idea in a paragraph or passage. It lets the reader know what topic or idea they are going to read about.

• It is most often found in the first sentence of the paragraph. However, the main idea may be found in any sentence of the paragraph.

• The main idea may be stated in the first sentence of a paragraph and then be repeated or restated at the end of the paragraph.

So how do you find it?1. Who or what is the paragraph about? 2. What information or idea about the ‘who’ or ‘what’ is the writer thinking about?

READING – MAIN IDEA PRACTICE

LOOK BACK TO THE READING ON P.37 - 38

Each group will get a paragraph (I will tell you) – in your group write the main idea for that paragraph.

READING – SUMMARY PRACTICE

LOOK BACK TO THE READING ON P.37 - 38

Now you will practice writing a summary for the reading using the handout ~

READING – CONTROLLING IDEALET’S LOOK AT SOME TOPIC SENTENCES FROM THE READING – CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT THE CONTROLLING IDEA IS?

“Hip-hop started in New York City in the 1970s but has become popular all over the world.
