    Spring Preview

Spring time always seems to bring about hope eternal. The frigid

air and gray skies are replaced by warm breezes and sunlit afternoons.

For the South Carolina football program, the forecast for the spring of

2005 is filled with rising optimism and renewed enthusiasm.

In the history of Gamecock football, perhaps no spring practice hasbrimmed with more anticipation than the one that began March 19.

As head coach Steve Spurrierembarks on his first season at the helm of

the Carolina program, the Gamecock faithful are like expectant fathers

pacing the floor of the delivery room, awaiting the start of something

new and exciting. Coach Spurrier, who has a national championship

and eight conference titles on his 15-year college coaching resume,

is back in the Southeastern Conference following two seasons as the

head coach of the NFLs Washington Redskins. The former Heisman

Trophy winner had directed Duke to an Atlantic Coast Conference

crown before returning to his alma mater, the University of Florida,

where he led the Gators to the 1996 national title and seven South-

eastern Conference championships. When former USC head coach

Lou Holtz announced his retirement last Nov. 22, Coach Spurrier was

introduced as Carolinas next head coach the following day. Since that

time, USC could hardly wait for spring practice to commence, so the

highly innovative coach could begin to mold the 2005 version of the

    Gamecocks.

With the arrival of Coach Spurrier, fan support at Carolina prom-

ises to swell to an unprecedented level. At this writing, fundraising

is up by more than $3 million from this time a year ago. The Garnet

and Black Spring Game, scheduled for Saturday, April 16, expects to

draw a record crowd. Furthermore, ESPNU, ESPNs new college sports

channel, is slated to televise the game live to a national television au-

dience. Simply put, there are a multitude of positive vibes permeating

the Gamecock football program as spring gets underway.
