Kororoit Creek Primary School has a zero tolerance for any form of child abuse
05 June 2020 Online Learning @ KCPS…what a journey! We are all so excited to finally welcome back our Grade 3-6 students next week, I know teachers are eager to have them all back in the classroom together. As we return to face-to-face learning, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support in making ‘Online learning @ KCPS’ such a success. Whilst it took us some time to find what worked and what didn’t, overall the feedback has been incredible. It really was a community effort! Teachers worked hard to plan accessible lessons that challenged and engaged students, children logged onto Seesaw each day and completed their tasks, reflected on their learning and responded to feedback. Parents, you made sure it all happened at home, providing support when needed and encouraging your child throughout. I know it wasn’t easy, especially with managing your own work and life commitments. I have been so incredibly proud of our entire community throughout this time- Thank-you! Staggered start and finish times The staggered start and finish times and additional measures that have been put in place will continue until the advice from the Chief Health Officer changes. Evidence shows that transmission in the school environment is mainly from adult-to-adult and children are less likely to contribute significantly to disease spread. We will continue to implement
staggered start and finish times to reduce congestion at drop off and pick up times. As I mentioned in my recent Compass posts, please make arrangements as a family and encourage your child to meet you at a gate at your designated time. Older siblings are encouraged to collect younger siblings and walk with them to your meeting point if possible. I am still encouraging Prep and Grade 1 students to use their designated gate, however students in Grades 2-6 can enter and exit via any gate. Please remember if you arrive to collect your child earlier than your designated time that you wait away from the gate to reduce congestion.

Enrolments
Enrolments are now open for Prep 2021. It is critical that parents with siblings who wish to attend Kororoit
Creek Primary school in 2021 enroll their child by the end of this term to ensure their place at the school.
School Gymnasium
As many of you would be aware from last week’s virtual assembly, there was a water leak in our school gym
and water seeped under the timber floor which resulted in the gym floor rising. This has meant that the
gym floor needs to be replaced. Due to the current climate there has been significant delays in delivery of
materials and the work will not begin until the term break. We will be unable to use the gymnasium in the
meantime, the PE team have modified their program to ensure minimal disruption to the students.
Term 2 Swimming Refund
For those families wanting a refund please complete the form and return to the office.
Kingswim Activity Book
Whilst students are waiting to get back to swimming, Kingswim are offering their latest activity book.
You can download the activity book here.
A couple of changes due to the current COVID-19 circumstances…
Birthday Cupcakes
I am asking that parents do not send cupcakes or treats to school to celebrate their child’s birthday.
Canteen
The canteen will be closed until further notice, please ensure your child comes to school with a packed
lunch each day.
Genesis Music
Genesis will not be running music lessons at KCPS until further notice.
Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2 Class Captains
The wait was finally over for our Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2 Class Captains who received their badges when
they returned to school last week. Students in Grades 3-6 will be given their badges when they return to
school on June 9.
School Review 2020
Due to COVID-19 our school review has been rescheduled to Term 3. The review will take place over
several days between 30th July 2020 and 6th August.
I will be working closely with our entire school community including my leadership team, school council,
students and parents to gain a strong understanding of where we are at as a school and our focus moving
forward.
The Department of Education (DET) conducts reviews of schools every 4-5 years. This rigorous process is
conducted by the Victorian Registration & Qualifications Authority (VRQA) and the evaluation is completed
with support from a DET appointed external reviewer.
The school review supports schools to differentiate their improvement journey by building on current
strengths and assisting them to respond to challenges. The review process maintains that every school can
improve.
The school review:
welcomes school community participation
embraces the input of experts from both within and beyond the school
forges links between evidence, school review, and strategic and annual planning
seeks multiple perspectives and engagement with the whole school community with the objective
of school improvement
celebrates strengths and achievements
Following the review the school will receive a report that outlines key findings and recommended
improvement strategies to maximise student outcomes. This then results in the development of the School
Strategic Plan (SSP) which will outline our focused work over the next four years.
I will continue to keep our community informed about the school review process in upcoming weeks. This is
a very exciting time for Kororoit Creek Primary School, as we can begin to forge our future steps.
I hope you all enjoy the long weekend, I look forward to welcoming all of our students back on Tuesday.
Bethany Riseley
Welcoming back our Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2 Students
The Prep students have made a smooth transition back to school and it has been lovely to see
them demonstrating enthusiasm towards their learning. They have been so excited to be in the
classroom with their friends and teachers, and have shown their increased independence and
resilience. Over the last two weeks, the students have been learning about word families including
‘at’ words, and they have been focusing on drawing and segmenting words when labelling their
drawings. Well done to all of the Prep students!
Some of our Grade One students have enjoyed some play based learning!
We have been exploring our creativity and writing about it too!
Kosta from H08 has been working incredibly hard this year with
his reading. This week, Kosta had the opportunity to read the
book "Hop, Hop, Hop" to Bethany, our Principal.
He received not only 1 but 2 Principal Award stickers!
What an amazing achievement!
Grade Two Update! In Grade Two, the students have been excited to come back to school to see all of their friends! It is a relief to see the students’ smooth transition back into their classroom environment, their learning sanctuary. Not only that – they have been connecting to tasks that were
completed through online learning. They have proven their understanding of concepts learnt through online learning as something they will always remember and connect with. Students are repeatedly saying “I remember when we did this through online learning” and “Can we try
the activity we did on Seesaw in class?” While back at school, we have being putting in a great effort in protecting the health of the school community and the students have been managing their own personal hygiene routines. Here are a few pieces that students have completed
this term as we have come back to school.
The students in Homeroom 20 have
been thinking writers by going through
the writing process. We have explored
the Writer’s Workshop Model and
started to work hard on planning and
drafting a piece of writing of our choice.
Alayna and Vera have both decided to
plan and draft a narrative with their
overall purpose to entertain their
audience.
In Homeroom 20 we have worked on our speaking and
listening skills by sharing work that we are proud of
from online learning. Isaac shared a published book all
about dinosaur facts which is now a part of our
classroom library!
In Homeroom 22 we reflected
on our online learning
experience and shared with
our peers what we liked the
most. We also used our
knowledge of sounds to help
us with spelling new words in
our reflections.
In Homeroom 26 we have practiced hand hygiene by ensuring we thoroughly wash our hands
regularly throughout the day. “Germs are not for sharing!” We also reflected on our online
learning and shared a learning experience that we are most proud of with our peers.

ART The Grade Prep students have been inquiring into drawing. They have
focused on the arts elements line and shape alongside drawing to fill the page to create
clear pictures. Students have been practicing recording what they can see within their
environment and including this within their artworks. They have also practiced
identifying verbally different types of lines and shapes. Students have learnt to combine
this knowledge to create a range of artworks drawing on their imagination and their
surrounding environment.
FRENCH Bonjour! The grade one students have been engaging with
some French texts since returning onsite. We have explored the vocabulary in
‘L’araignée gipsy’ (Incy Wincy) and ‘Le lapin a bien du chagrin’ (The sad rabbit). The
students have understood the sequence of a story and the elements required to
make an engaging narrative. They will implement their new learning when creating
their own French picture books in the coming weeks. We look forward to seeing their
creations.
MUSIC The prep students have begun to inquire into the central idea of ‘People use their
imagination when creating and exploring music’. Through different learning experiences, students have been
able to use their imagination to respond to a variety of stimuli. These learning experiences have included
drawing to music and moving to a beat. Students have been continuing to develop their skills and knowledge
around the rhythmic concepts of ta’s, ti-ti’ and sa’s by practising identifying these through writing and
performing these on a range of percussion instruments and ICT. The music team have begun to introduce
Mi, So and La when singing simple songs has begun to support singing tunefully.
PE Students from Grade Prep and Grade One have continued to practise their throwing and catching
skills. They have been focussing on using the correct technique when performing overarm and underarm
throws using the right amount of force and strength. Students from Grade 2 are continuing with the
Health and Fitness unit by consolidating their understanding of how their heart, lungs and muscles work
together when performing exercises. They are experimenting with skipping ropes to practise the correct
techniques such as bouncing on their toes, holding the rope correctly and spinning the rope when jumping.
Last fortnight’s Specialist Update…
ART The grade five students have been exploring and experimenting with blending
techniques and combining a range of warm and cool colours to create an effective artwork. Students
created a landscape image such as a beach or sunset using specific blending techniques and the
elements of line and shape to practise demonstrating seamless colour effects within larger areas of
work, focusing on a specific colour family that was appropriate to their chosen landscape. The grade
five students also created a snow globe that represented a theme of their choice, using the drawing
techniques they had inquired into previously, as well as blending appropriate colours in a smaller area
of space. Students extended their skills in their artworks by adding intricate details and designs
inside their snow globes to tell a story suited their theme and discussed what they were proud of but also reflected
on what they could improve to make their work even better. The grade five students are beginning their inquiry into
perspective drawing this week.
FRENCH The grade two students have been exploring the weather in different French speaking
countries. They have been very creative by making posters about the weather. They
have also learnt that in French, countries have different genders, therefore there are
two ways of saying the word ‘in’. For example, “Au Canada” when the country is
masculine, but “En France” when the country is feminine. This week, they are learning
about clothes in French. At the end of the term, they will be able to write a complex
sentence, for example, ‘In Canada, it is cold and raining, so they wear a coat and gloves’.
They will illustrate that on a nice poster.
MUSIC The grade one students have been inquiring into the central idea of,
‘Different cultures use music to express themselves in a variety of ways’. Throughout this
unit students have been performing a range of different cultural songs such as: Taba Naba,
Pintxo Pintxo and Sesere Eeye. Students have explored the musical elements: dynamics,
tempo, pitch and character through a range of movement and interactive learning
experiences designed to build their understanding of the element and related vocabulary.
Students then used the website folkcloud.com to explore music from around the world and
analyse the use of musical elements within these songs.
PE Over the last fortnight, all students have been continuing to explore the Health and Fitness unit. The junior
year levels have been participating in different types of exercise including yoga, zumba, tabata and aerobic workouts.
Students have been inquiring into how different exercises impact their bodies in different ways. They have been
exploring how harder or more intense exercises will make their heart beat faster and increase their breathing rate,
whereas less intense or easier exercises will not exhibit the same effects on the heart and lungs. Students in grade 3
and 4 have also been learning about intensity of exercise as well as how much physical activity and sleep they should
be getting each day. These students have been tracking this data in the form of exercise logs and aiming to meet the
national physical activity guidelines. Students in grade 5 and 6 have been focusing on health and skill-related fitness
components and discovering which exercises best target and improve different areas of fitness. The students then
applied this knowledge by creating their own fitness circuits targeting a health-related fitness component.
