Monitoring and Evaluating of the Outreach Facilitation Training

AIM: to assess the initiative’s relevance, efficacy, effectiveness and sustainability

The M&E strategy was comprised of three prongs:First prong•Analysis of feedback provided by 317 facilitators that attended training sessions in one year•To assess relevance, efficacy and effectiveness of the training

Second prong:•Collect longitudinal data by eliciting feedback from previously-trained participants through a call campaign of previously trained participants• trained participants were divided by sites across South Africa• approximately 20% of the participants from each site (68 people) were randomly selected for inclusion•to provide insight into the relevance, effectiveness and sustainability of the initiative

FindingsRelevance, Efficacy and EffectivenessFacilitation training was perceived as relevant, useful and beneficial by participantsIn terms of effectiveness, almost all participants felt capable of facilitating what they were trained in and reported using the Outreach resources to facilitate content with the general public, predominantly with individuals in clinicsIn terms of relevance, participants felt the training was useful, as they learnt new skills. Many participants noted using the Mindset material in their daily work

SustainabilityIn terms of sustainability, most participants were doing the same work as

when they were trained, and were using the knowledge and skillsMany participants plan on remaining in the health sectorCurrently, half of the participants use the content received in training to deliver information to others

This initiative aims to up-lift and up-skill facilitators, who are then expected to facilitate content to others

Participants acknowledge receiving facilitation skills and using these skills in their work

Their reported plans to remain in the health sector imply that the initiative is sustainable and perceived as relevant and effective

RecommendationsRecommendations in 2 main areas:

Revision of Mindset Health Outreach StrategyThe inclusion of follow up sessions in the training strategy is recommended as it would likely enhance the initiative’s sustainability

Revision of M&E ProcessesFacilitators that are trained during the Facilitation Capacity Building should be monitored more closely over a period of time to gain agreater depth of information regarding sustainability

A comprehensive list of facilitators who receive the resources needs to be maintained in order to track their facilitation of other individuals
