The Christian Perspective

Sin is any attitude or action, intentional or unintentional,

which violates the standard or design of God.

Grace is the source of our salvation. Jesus death and resurrection is the basis of our salvation.

PROPITIATION - ιλασκομαι Satisfaction of God’s Wrath

  Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the

power of death—that is, the devil— and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants. For this reason he had to be made

like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself suffered

when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. Hebrews 2:13-18 (NIV)

PROPITIATION - ιλασκομαι Satisfaction of God’s Wrath

  Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become

a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the

sins of the people. Hebrews 2:17 (NASB)

PROPITIATION - ιλασκομαι Objects of God’s Wrath

  He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life,

but the wrath of God abides on him John 3:36 (NASB)

   For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the

truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them.

PROPITIATION - ιλασκομαι Substitution for God’s Wrath

  But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the

Prophets, even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no

distinction; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the

redemption which is in Christ Jesus; whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith.

   This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the

sins previously committed; for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time,

so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

JUSTIFICATION - δικαιοω Declared Righteous

  Where then is boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith.

For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law. 

Or is God the God of Jews only? Is He not the God of Gentiles also?

Yes, of Gentiles also, since indeed God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith is one.

JUSTIFICATION - δικαιοω Guilty with no Righteousness

  What then? Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin; 

as it is written, “There is none righteous, not even one; 

There is none who understands,There is none who seeks for God; 

All have turned aside, together they have become useless;There is none who does good,

When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has

taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Colossians 2:13-14 (NASB)

For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.

In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His

Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, so that every mouth may be closed

and all the world may become accountable to God; because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight;

For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son,

 And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us; for after saying,  “This is the covenant that I will make with them

After those days, says the Lord:I will put My laws upon their heart, And on their mind I will write them,”

He then says,  “And their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”

Now where there is forgiveness of these things, there is no longer any offering for sin.

STANDING IN GRACE καρις

Everyone who trusts in Jesus for salvation is “justified freely by His grace” (Rom. 3:24; see also Titus 3:7), is saved by grace (Eph. 2:5,8), and has redemption and forgiveness “according to the

riches of His grace” (Eph. 1:7). As a result we are not under law but under grace” (Rom. 6:14). We

“stand” (that is, we are positioned spiritually before God) in a position of grace (Rom. 5:2).
