Kannapolis has lost its last six games, dating back to May 13, and have dropped eight of nine entering this series. Asheville is currently 5.5 games back in the South Atlantic League Southern Division after dropping three of their last four, however the Tourists have won six of their last nine. The Intimidators lost two of three games in their last trip to Asheville, August 19-21, 2015, and went 3-11 against the Tourists last season. Intimidating Starter: Johnathan Frebis, 23, makes his eighth start of the season and his second career outing against a Rockies affiliate. He is coming off his roughest start of the season on May 14 against Hagerstown, allowing six runs (five earned) on three hits with five walks and a strikeout in 2.2 innings. His 19 walks is second on the team and tied for seventh in the SAL, however opponents are batting just .189 against him, which ranks fourth-best in the league. Frebis has struggled in road starts, going 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA (12 ER/16 IP) in four starts compared to 3-0 with a 1.69 ERA (3 ER/16.0 IP) in three home starts. Earlier this season, he spun a career-high 6.1 innings in which he took a no-hitter one out into the seventh inning on April 26 at Augusta, retiring 19 of the first 20 he faced. Frebis made his pro debut in 2015 with the AZL White Sox and Kannapolis, going 4-0 with a 3.45 ERA (11 ER/28.2 IP) in 16 appearances. The White Sox selected Frebis in the 33rd round of the June 2015 First-Year Player Draft out of MTSU where he holds the program record for career starts with 59, ranks third in wins (20), fourth in IP (310.0), and sixth in strikeouts (230). Hoppers Hurler: Peter Lambert, 19, makes his eighth start of the season as he faces a White Sox farm team for the first time in his career. He ranks fifth in the SAL with a 2.14 ERA and, among starters, is third in lowest walks/9 IP ratio at 0.80 (3 BB-IBB, 33.2 IP). He is coming off five scoreless innings in a win May 14 at Columbia and has not allowed a run in his last 11 innings. After going 1-1 with a 3.20 ERA (7 ER/19.2 IP) in four April starts, he has been nearly untouchable in May, going 1-0 with a 0.64 ERA (1 ER/14.0 IP) in his last three starts. Lambert entered this season rated by Baseball America as the No. 14 Prospect in the Rockies organization. He was picked in the second round (44th overall) of the June 2015 First-Year Player Draft out of San Dimas (Calif.) High School and signed with Colorado for $1.495 million. Last season with Advanced Rookie Grand Junction, he went 0-4 with a 3.45 ERA in eight games, however he did not face the White Sox affiliate Great Falls in the Pioneer League. About Last Night: Tanner Banks pitched well but took a hard-luck loss as the Grasshoppers scored a 2-1 win on Wednesday. Banks (6-1) worked 7.0 innings, allowing two runs (one earned), and Taylore Cherry spun a scoreless eighth and ninth. Jose Quijada (1-0) earned the win with four strikeouts over 2.0 scoreless inning, and Scott Squier kept Kannapolis off the board over the final 3.0 innings to earn the save (3). Greensboro’s Giovanny Alfonzo went 3-4 with an RBI, and Angel Reyes finished 2-2 with two runs scored. Cody Daily’s sac-fly scored Tyler Sullivan for the Intimidators’ only run. Out-Hit It or Quit It: Despite equaling Greensboro in hit total on Wednesday, 7-7, Kannapolis fell to 0-17 when failing to outhit their opponent. Kannapolis is 16-6 when they outhit their opponent but now 0-6 when hits are equal and 0-11 when being outhit in 2016. Better Than Average Arms: Two Kannapolis starting pitchers rank in the SAL’s top five in opponent batting average. Johnathan Frebis is holding the league to a .189 average, which ranks fourth while his teammate Zach Thompson is allowing a .194 average, fifth-best on the circuit. Among starting pitchers, Frebis and Thompson rank third and fourth, respectively, while Tanner Banks (.198) ranks fifth. Mendick Streaking: Danny Mendick went 1-4 Wednesday to extend his on-base streak to 18 games, passing Cody Daily for the longest on-base streak by an Intimidators player in 2016 and tied for 12th-longest streak in the SAL this season. Mendick, who has reached base in every game with Kannapolis since April 11, owns the third-longest active streak in the SAL, behind Charleston’s Chris Gittens (23) and Lakewood’s Jose Pujols (21). Mendick is batting .333 (24-72) in 21 games with the Intimidators. Hitting Streak Nears 10: Danny Mendick has hit safely in his last nine games with Kannapolis (since April 20), matching Tyler Sullivan (April 30-May 9) for the longest hit streak by an Intimidators player this season. The hitting streak is the third-longest active in the SAL, behind Delmarva’s Alex Murphy (10) and Lexington’s Amalani Fukofuka (10). The last Intimidator to hit in 10 straight games was Toby Thomas, Aug. 19-30, 2015. Sullivan Sets the Table: Leadoff man Tyler Sullivan ranks tied for fourth in the league with 26 walks and 28 runs scored. He ranks tied for third in the league with 13 stolen bases. His six sacrifice hits are tied for second- most on the circuit. Sullivan is batting .273 with a .388 on-base percentage in 37 games this season. Banks Money in Loss: Tanner Banks matched his career-high with six strikeouts on Wednesday, the third time he has reached that total and second this season. Banks last fanned a half-dozen batters April 26 at Augusta. He is now 6-1 with a 2.19 ERA in eight starts and leads the league with 49.1 innings pitched. Banks, the reigning Pioneer League Pitcher of the Year, is tied for the league lead in wins, complete games (1) and shutouts (1), and he ranks sixth on the circuit in ERA. Battered and Broomed: Kannapolis suffered its first series sweep of the season this week as Greensboro took all three games against the Intimidators May 16-18. It’s the first time the Intimidators had been swept in nearly a year, with the last sweep coming May 18-20, 2015, in Asheville (3 games). Kannapolis last suffered a sweep at home since losing three straight August 19-21, 2014, against Asheville. The Pawtucket Red Sox (AAA, Red Sox) and Rochester Red Wings (AAA, Orioles at the time) played the longest game in baseball history, a 33-inning affair, that the PawSox won, 3-2. The game took more than eight hours over two days to complete and featured future Hall of Famers Cal Ripken Jr. of Rochester and Wade Boggs of the PawSox. The game started April 18 and was halted at 4:09 a.m. the following morning by order of International League president Harold Cooper. The teams resumed the game on June 23.

Banks an asset, named SAL Pitcher of the WeekLeft-handed pitcher Tanner Banks earned South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week honors for the week of April 18-24, the league announced Monday. Banks tossed a 9-inning complete game shutout on April 20 at West Virginia in his lone appearance of the week to become the first Kannapolis Intimidators pitcher to work nine scoreless innings since 2011. Banks earned a win against the Power, improving to 3-0 on the season while lowering his ERA to 1.42 through three starts in 2016. He worked around four hits and a walk while striking out five in the outing. The Intimidators have not had a starting pitcher throw a 9-inning complete game shutout since at least 2005. The last Kannapolis starting pitcher to work nine full innings came June 18, 2011, when Spencer Arroyo spun nine scoreless innings in an Intimidators’ 12-inning win, 1-0, against Greensboro. The Chicago White Sox selected Banks in the 18th round of the June 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Utah. In 2015, he made eight relief appearances with Kannapolis before joining the starting rotation of Advanced Rookie Great Falls, going 5-5 with a Pioneer League-best 2.51 ERA in 14 games (14 starts) for the Voyagers en route to being named a co-recipient of the Logan Hurlbert Pitcher of the Year Award in the PL. Banks, a mid- and post-season All-Star in the PL in 2015, served as the league’s starting pitcher for the 2015 PL All-Star Team.
