Dear CREC Families,

Thank you for choosing a CREC education for your child. It is our pleasure to have the opportunity to

educate your child and thousands of children throughout the greater Hartford area.

Key to our partnership with families is open communication about issues that may impact you. You may

have heard rumors or read in the news that the CT legislature passed a law that would require CREC to

charge parents tuition for their child to enroll in an early childhood program in CREC magnet schools. We

want to assure you, CREC will not charge new or returning families in CREC’s early childhood programs

tuition for the 2014-2015 school year.

It is true, that on April 2, 2014, without providing any notice to parents, the State Board of Education voted to

approve a resolution that would adopt a tuition scale for parents and guardians of children in magnet school

early childhood (preschool) programs. This resolution was the result of 2013 legislation passed by the

Connecticut General Assembly: House Bill 6706. CREC is fully opposed to this legislation.

As written, the law gives CREC the option of implementing the tuition scale in 2014-2015. Therefore, CREC

will not exercise this option – CREC will not charge new or returning families in CREC’s early childhood

programs tuition for the 2014-2015 school year.

This legislation is of the utmost importance to us. In the coming year, we will lobby the Governor’s office,

members of the Connecticut General Assembly, and the State Board of Education to rescind this law. If you

would like to join us in this lobbying effort, to bring attention to this law and the value of your child’s

education, please consider becoming a member of the CREC Community Advocacy Group. For more

information about the group, or to be included in future events, please contact CREC’s Coordinator of

Legislative Affairs, Julia Winer, at [email protected] or (860)509-3666.

We greatly value your partnership and thank you for your enduring support.

Sincerely,

Bruce E. Douglas, Ph.D.
