The season of Great Lent is the time of prepartion for the feast of the Resurrection of Christ, It is th
living symbol of mans entire life which is to be fufilled in his own resurrection from the dead wit
Christ. It is a time of renewed devotion: oprayer, fasting, and almsgiving. It is a time o
repentance, a real renewal of our mindhearts and deeds in conformity wit
Christ and his teachings. It is thtime, most of all, of our return the great commandments of lovinGod and our neighbors.
Great Lent is not a season omorbidity and gloominess. On thcontrary, it is a time of joyfulnes
and purification. We are called tanoint our faces and to cleansour bodies as we cleanse our soulsThe very first hymns of the very firservice of Great Lent set the propetone of the season:
Let us begin the lenten timwith delight ... let us fast frompassions as we fast from footaking pleasure in the goowords of the Spirit, that we mabe granted to see the holy pasion of Christ our God and h
holy Pascha, spiritually rejoicingThy grace has arisen upon us, O Lord, the illu
mination of our souls has shown forth; behold, now ithe acceptable time; behold, now is the time of repentance. -Vesper Hymns
It is our repentance that God desires, not our rmorse. We sorrow for our sins, but we do so in the joy oGods mercy. We mortify our flesh, but we do so in thjoy of our resurrection into life everlasting. We makready for the resurrection during Great Lent, boChrists Resurrection and our own.

The icon of the Sunday of the Meatfare incorporatesall of the elements of the parable of the Last Judgmentfrom Matthew 25:31-46. Christ sits on the throne and be-fore him the Last Judgment takes place. He is extending hishands in blessing upon the Theotokos on his right, andJohn the Baptist on his left. Seated on smaller thrones arethe Apostles, represented by Peter and Paul, a depiction of
the words of Christ in Matthew 19:28. (1.)Proceeding from the throne are the scrolls pronounc-ing the judgment upon the sheep and the goats. (2.)Thefaithful are received with the words that are written on thescroll to the right of Christ the Judge, Come, you blessedof My Father, and inherit the kingdom (v. 34). The scrollon the left condemns the unfaithful with the words, Departfrom me you cursed, into the everlasting fire (v. 41).
Before the throne, the progenitors of the human race,Adam and Eve, bow before Christ. (2.)In the center of theicon is the Archangel Michael. He is holding the scales ofudgment and is surrounded by the books that contain the

works of each person (Revelation 20:11-13). (3.) Alshown are the angels with trumpets announcing the retuof Christ and signaling the resurrection of the dead and tcommencement of the Last Judgment (I Thessalonia4:16-17). (4.)
To the left of the Archangel are both the living athe dead who are approaching the throne and Christ t
judge. Whereas Adam and Eve are representative of allhumanity, this part of the icon shows that both the liviand the dead will stand before Christ. (5.)
At the bottom right of the icon is the everlasting fprepared for the devil and the demons, and also for thowho are not found worthy to inherit the Kingdom of Go(6.)
The icon offers a clear image of the theme of judment with Christ on His throne, the Archangel with tscales and books, and the anticipation of the sentence everlasting punishment for the unrighteous and the rewaof eternal life for the righteous.
1. Christ is seated on the throne between the Theotokos (left) and SaintJohn the Baptist (right). Seated on smaller thrones are the Apostles, represented here by Saint Peter (left) and Saint Paul (right).
3. Below Adam and Eve is theArchangel Michael surroundeby the books which contain theworks of each person.
2. The scrolls pronouncing the judg-ment can be seen at Christ's feet andbelow them, Adam and Eve bow be-fore Christ.
4. To the left and right of the Archangel
Michael are angels with trumpets an-nouncing to the world the return of JesusChrist, the start of the Last Judgements, and signaling the resurrection of the dead.

The Last Judgment+ F R . T O M G L Y N N

thought from Henri Nouwen: How much longer
will I live? Quite a few classmates have died al-ready. I could live another thirty years! Do I
want to live that long? Or do I hope to be united toChrist sooner?
Only one thing seems clear to me. Everydayshould be well lived. What a simple truth! Still, it isworth my attention. Did I offer peace today? Did Ibring a smile to someones face today? Today did I saywords of healing? Did I let go of anger and resent-ments? Did I forgive? Did I love? These are the realquestions. I must trust that the little bit of love that I
plant now will bear many fruits, here in this world andin the life to come. (Sabbatical Journey, 61)I suggest that you use these thoughts and ques-
tions as part of your prayer during the coming GreatFast. I also recommend the many books on the spirituallife that Henri Nouwen has written.
This Sunday has several names: Meat Fast Sun-day, in the early Church practice no meat was eatenfrom today until Easter Sunday. It is also called theSunday of the Last Judgement. The theme of todays
Gospel reading- Matthew 25: 31-46. Death judgment,
are things we would rather not think about. We live in adeath-denying society. Death is covered over with somany nice-sounding euphemisms. Death, all around us,is seen as something that happens to so many other peo-ple- but not to me. Our departed are handed over nowinto the hands of an undertaker. In past times familiesprepared their dead members. The dead now are takento a funeral parlor, not to the parlors of the homes in
which they lived. The dead are now covered with cos-metics and soft lights.
Does the thought of death- ones own de
make you uncomfortable? Today we are called upothink about our own mortality, the end of our earlife. Psalm 90:12 prays: O teach us to count our d
aright, that we may be given wisdom of heart. This
meditation on the passing of our human existencethousand years in Your sight are like a yesterday.
day we are reminded that at a divine command we return to the dust from which we were taken.
This Sunday reminds us of the fragility of lives and the things which seem so in important to u

but a breath (psalm 39:12). But this psalm also leadhope. Through divine grace God gives value to our joy to the days given to us: Fill us at daybreak w
Your love that all our days we may sing for joy- mayfavor of the Lord be ours (psalm 90:4-17)
The Liturgy of today pulls no punches:
creation will tremble when You come to earth in glO God. A river of fire will flow past Your judgmthrone. The books will be opened and secrets wilrevealed. Deliver me from the unquenchable firemost righteous Judge, (kondak of meat fast Sunday
The books of our life will be opened, our secout. The event we proclaim in the Apostles Creed:will come again to judge the living and the dead.
God will bring to light what is hidden in darkness will manifest the motives of our heart (1 Cor. 4:5) T
those who counted Gods grace as nothing will be c
demned. Out attitude about others will disclose ourceptance or refusal of grace and divine love. We hear Jesus say to us; what you did to the least of
brothers you did to me.
Knowing the commandments of the Lord. Let this be our way of life: let us feed thehungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, welcome strangers, visit those in
prison and the sick. Then the Judge of the earth will say to us: Come, you whom MyFather has blessed, inherit the kingdom prepared for you.
