Trailer II, a continuation of its predecessor, The

mer of 1996. Knight’s music has been compared
to that of such musicians as Bruce Springsteen,
Hank Williams, John Prine and Steve Earle.
Knight’s truthful telling of the small-town down-

thy of being heard. Denton musician Chris
Welch, who plays with Pinebox Serenade and
the Jakeys, will open for Knight with a 30-
minute solo set. General admission tickets cost

Megafaun’s music is as warm and fuzzy as the gentleman performers’ wooly
beards. Band members Joe Westerlund, Brad Cook and Phil Cook’s influences
come from “everything and everyone,” according to their MySpace page, but
astute ears will recognize a mix of folk, country, gospel and ’60s rock sung in homey har-
mony and accompanied by banjo, guitar, accordion and drums. Add a dash of down-to-earth
humor, just for good karma, and you’ll see why they’re gathering fans across the country on
their U.S. tour. The North Carolina band makes one of its last tour stops on Friday at Hailey’s,
122 W. Mulberry St. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is $10 for patrons 21 and older and $12

The Back-Up Plan () Assembly-
line romantic comedy stars Jennifer
Lopez as a pet store owner who has
trouble finding Mr. Right, so she tries
artificial insemination, only to meet
her perfect man (Alex O'Loughlin) on
the very same day. After she has
trouble telling him the secret, it
threatens to tear them apart.
However, like just about everything
that precedes it, the ending is pretty
easy to guess. Lopez and O'Loughlin
generate some moderate chemistry,
but the eccentric supporting cast has
many of the best lines in this con-
trived cute-fest. Rated PG-13, 104
minutes. — Todd Jorgenson

The Most Dangerous Man inAmerica: Daniel Ellsberg and thePentagon Papers (1/2) Oscar-

While the film lacks structural polish,
it's an eye-opening look at its subject

Oceans is magnificent. This tribute to awe and
majesty from Disneynatureuncovers a world of wondersboth above and beneath thewaters that encircle our globe, the oceans that, in the soft-spo-ken words of narrator PierceBrosnan, feed us and have pro-vided us with our greatest sto-ries and legends. And here, 84minutes of stunning beautyand unimaginable variety flyby, as some of the planet’s hid-den marvels are revealed.
French filmmakers JacquesPerrin and Jacques Cluzaudspent nearly a decade recordingrarely or never seen sea life, doc-umenting their strange, preda-tory, yet often frolicsome, humanlike ways. Whether it isthe whales weighing more than100 tons, or barely visible crabsscuttling across the ocean floors, they have been captured in theirnatural settings, provoking bothfear and admiration.
The wondrous sights ofOceans never end, with eachsucceeding sea creature evok-ing additional responses of
astonishment. The directorshave obviously selected notonly the most strikingly visualexamples of marine life but alsothose that provide their filmwith the highest entertainmentvalue. This superlative techni-cal achievement also capturesseveral unusual underwatersounds, maybe not so surpris-ing when viewers are informedthat sound travels farther andfaster underwater.
Elsewhere, nature plays outas “big fish eat little fish,” andevery creature must use its ownguile, speed and prowess to
survive. Only one of 1,000 babysea turtles hatched on land willmake it to the sea withoutbeing snapped up from above. The race is on — not just for alonely turtle, but also to perpet-uate the species.
From playful sea otters offthe California coast, to migrat-ing whales in the Arctic, Oceansdocuments a world too beauti-ful to ignore or overlook.

He’s got the whole world in
his jazz. Chick Corea leads
the Chick Corea Trio as
the headline act for the Denton
Arts & Jazz Festival’s opening
night. Corea’s jazz shrinks from
nary a corner of the world. He’s
recorded with bluegrass banjo
legend Bela Fleck and electronic
jazzman Herbie Hancock, among
many others. And Corea has
applied the jazz idiom to classi-
cal music. Since he began his
career in the 1960s, Corea has
used his piano — both acoustic
and electric — to cross bound-
aries of culture and language.
Catch him at 9 p.m. Friday on the

Fans will have the opportunity to hearmany of the cuts from Vaughan’s albumBlues, Ballads and Favorites, to bereleased on Shout Factory in July. Thisis Vaughan’s fourth solo album and hisfirst studio release in nine years.
Vaughan said the music he chose is“part of the American blues songbook. Alot of these songs were hits in that genre.A lot of them weren’t — they were pret-ty obscure. My goal has always been toplay what I want to hear, and hopefullyother people will want to hear that too.”
“I wanted to find songs I could playand sing that would work for us,” hesaid. “It’s stuff that I like, and I thoughtpeople would like it.”
Vaughan has numerous recordings tohis credit, including seven with theFabulous Thunderbirds and a 1990 duoalbum with brother Stevie RayVaughan, who died in a helicopter crashjust days before the album’s release. Thebrothers won their second Grammy forthis recording, and Jimmie Vaughanhas two others to his name, includingbest traditional blues album in 2001.
Vaughan, Barton and the band will beon tour in the Midwest, the East Coastand Europe through much of May, Juneand July, including a gig at Eric Clapton’sCrossroads Guitar Festival in Chicago.

Brave Combo plans to bring down thecurtain on the Denton Arts & JazzFestival with local favorites includingthe “Hokey Pokey” and the “ChickenDance.”
In fact, band leader Carl Finch wouldlike to set the world record for largestgroup chicken dance with Brave Com-bo’s dark-sounding version — if not onSunday evening, then maybe next year?
“I’m throwing it out there,” he said.“I’m making it a challenge.”
Brave Combo closes out the annualfestival on Sunday night, and Finchenjoys the tradition.
“It’s a hard experience to beat,” hesaid.
The Grammy-winning band has beenthe closing act of the festival since 1991— a year after the festival formed intowhat it is today — according to CarolShort, founder and chief organizer ofthe event.
So what secures the band’s position asthe final act of the festival?
The fact that Brave Combo is a“homegrown band” that formed aroundthe same time as the Denton FestivalFoundation, Short said.
“This is a community event, this is ourband, this is how we want to close theevent,” she said.
Of course, being the closing act isn’tthe only perk Finch enjoys.
He also enjoys the backstage food andportable toilets reserved for performersonly.
Unfortunately, he won’t have muchtime to enjoy what he jokingly calls
“hedonistic pleasures,” because asidefrom the Arts & Jazz Festival, his bandhas four other performances around thearea this weekend.
But the Denton festival ranks amongthe band’s top five shows of the yearbecause it’s what Finch calls the“Denton family reunion.”
Brave Combo plans to play many ofthe songs people expect, but the groupstill hopes to put on a surprising show.
“I’ll tell you how we make it differentevery year,” Finch said. “We get a yearolder.”
He’s kidding, although for Sunday’sperformance, the band will be jammingwith a few extra hands on deck, includ-ing an accordionist, a trombonist andextra percussionists.
There will be a “full stage of peoplemaking a lot of noise,” Finch said.
The band might not make the chick-en dance world record this year, but thearm-flapping, wiggling and cluckingwill go on.

The Denton Arts & Jazz Festival ishelping redefine the term “petting zoo.”
“The nice thing aboutmy petting zoo is itdoesn’t smell,” saidSteve Gryb, who callshimself the “Pied Piperof Percussion.”
The children’s area atthis weekend’s festivalwill offer Gryb’s percus-sion petting zoo, featuring more than100 different instruments from aroundthe world.
Gryb, a jazz musician from Miami,Fla., says people will recognize his tentby the noise — and the bubbles comingfrom his bubble machine.
He’ll be around to answer questionsabout what the instruments are andhow to play them. Though his tent willbe in the children’s area, he said it offerssomething for all ages.
“The people who get the biggest kick
Crash!Boom!Bam!
out of it are the parents,” said Gryb, whotravels around the country performinghis percussion show, “The Rhythm IsGoing to Get You,” and conducting hispercussion zoo.
“What I’m doing is very different, andthat’s what I think makes it a big hit,” hesaid.
Gryb says everybody has a rhythm, and he want to bring it out in them.
“I’m trying to stamp out musical illit-eracy,” he said.
The children’s art area will also includea magician performing tricks and mak-ing balloon sculptures, a singing cowboyand plenty of art projects.
Jane Ruestmann, coordinator of thechildren’s art tent, said she tries to offera variety of art projects, from painting toprintmaking. She picks projects thataren’t too messy, so kids can take theirnewly made creations with them.

Go ahead, have your turkey legs, your roasted corn and yourfunnel cakes. You can keep
your cinnamon-roasted almonds, yourJamaican jerk chicken, and yourchocolate-dipped bananas.
Guzzle as much beer, wine, lemon-ade and soft drinks as you like andwhile you’re at it, indulge in as manyfried foods as you can. But you’ll findme at the Denton Arts & Jazz Festivalstanding in line for kettle corn.
“What is kettle corn?” you may ask.It puts the dimple in my cheeks, the
song in my step, the tickle in my fancy. It is also the most delectable combina-tion of slightly sweet, salty and lightlycrunchy known to mankind, or at leastto fairgoers throughout the centuries.
I’m not exaggerating. While no oneknows who invented kettle corn, it’sbeen around a while, and it may evendate back to the 1700s, when it was asavory treat at festive events.
Supposedly, early colonial settlersfrom Pennsylvania wrote about it intheir diaries. I can read it now: DearDiary … How I love thee, oh kettle corn.My taste buds cannot wait until thoupasseth through my fair lips.
They made it then pretty much thesame way it’s made today, by tossingcorn kernels into hot fat (nowadays, oil) with a little molasses, honey orsugar and watching the kernels pop toperfection, and adding a little salt.
The scientific name for popcorn orpopping corn is Zea mays everta, which means “corn turned inside out.”Native Americans were the first tointroduce popcorn to the early Englishsettlers and brought a bag of popcornto the first Thanksgiving.
That was the beginning of the Uni-ted States’ obsession with the savorysnack, and now Americans consume
approximately 17 billion quarts of pop-corn a year. Dieters claim it in its natu-ral state as their mascot of indulgence. We sprinkle on salt, soak it in butter, cover it with cheese, and coat it withcaramel. But none of that comes closeto kettle corn, whose clear coating thatis naked to the eye is near perfection.
Here’s my diary entry: How I lovethee, oh Kettle Corn. I cannot wait untiltomorrow, when thou shall finallypass through my fair lips after lo, thesemany months. I will not forsake youfor turkey legs, funnel cakes or onionrings, and I promise to be faithful toyou until the end … of the bag.
Hot snack remains unrivaled
