Burgers are the go-to item for barbecues, campouts, fast-food meals, and late night trips to the diner. A juicy burger can satisfy so many cravings in one sitting. * Begin with fresh meat. Freshly ground meat will produce the best flavor. If you are unsure when the packaged ground beef was made, ask the butcher or someone in the meat department of the supermarket to grind you up a fresh batch. Otherwise, use a food processor or an attachment on a stand mixer to grind the meat yourself. * Fat has flavor. If you’re going to indulge in a burger, make sure it has a fair amount of fat content. Fat helps keep the burgers moist and juicy. Make sure the fat content is about 18 to 20 percent of the mix. This helps to guarantee flavorful burgers. * Keep the meat cold. Chilled burger patties will firm up and hold their shape better during cooking. Leave the pre-made patties in the refrigerator until the last minute. Keep patties on ice if you will be cooking burgers in batches. * Don’t overhandle the meat. Compressing the meat and handling it too much can lead to dry, dense burgers. Avoid tough meat by handling it as little as possible. Keep your hands wet while shaping the patties so they’ll come together easily. * Oil up the grill. A clean, well-oiled grill prevents burgers from sticking during cooking. * Make sure the grill is super-hot. The goal is to cook burgers over high heat and fast. This is achieved with a very hot grill. It may only take three to five minutes per side to cook the burgers, depending on the thickness of the patty. * Flip only once. Wait until the burgers have been grilling for a few minutes and release easily from the grill grate. Flip them over and allow them to cook a few minutes more. This helps keep the juices inside the meat and prevents your burgers from turning into burnt hockey pucks. * Resist the urge to squash the burgers. Pushing down on the burgers with the spatula will only force the juices out. If you want dry burgers, press them down. If you want nice, juicy burgers, step away from the spatula. Safety tips for school bus riders

Many students take the bus to school twice a day, five days a week. Approximately 26 million elementary and secondary school children ride school buses daily in the United States, and the U.S. Department of Transporta-tion says more than 50 percent of all K-12 students in the country ride yellow school buses, traveling approxi-mately 4 billion miles each year.

The vast majority of these miles are traveled without incident. In fact, according to the National Safety Council, the national school bus accident rate is 0.01 per 100 miles traveled, compared to 0.96 for other passenger vehicles, which makes school buses considerably safer than other passenger vehicles.

Though school buses are safe, there are other ways to make them even safer. Children, especially those new to school buses, may find the bus fun and unique and not pay attention to simple safety rules. But parents should take steps to ensure that youngsters always heed the following school bus safety guidelines.

* Wait for the bus in a safe location that is away from traffic, ideally staying in a designated school bus stop until the bus arrives.* Dress for optimal visibility, especially in inclement weather when it can be difficult for the school bus driver and other motorists to see pedestrians.* Do not board the bus until it comes to a complete stop. Wait for the driver to open the door, which engages the “Stop” sign for oncoming motorists.* Use the handrail and enter the bus in an orderly manner.* Promptly find a seat, sit down and buckle the safety belt if there is one available. Students assigned seats on the bus should take their seat without making a fuss.* Keep backpacks and other belongings out of the center aisle. Store them under your seat or on your lap.* Remain seated at all times while the bus is in motion.* Keep arms, hands, legs, and heads inside of the bus at all times.* Always follow the driver’s instructions and avoid situa-tions that will cause driver distraction.* Wait for the bus to stop completely before standing up or attempting to exit.* Exit the bus in an orderly manner, without pushing fellow passengers.* Only cross the street in front of the bus. It is very difficult for the driver to see students crossing behind the bus.* Wait for the driver to check traffic before crossing the street and be on the lookout for inattentive motorists.

Parents have a host of options at their disposal when the time comes to buy new cars for their families. While dad might have long dreamed of driving the fastest sports car on the market, such a vehicle does not make much practical sense when car trips figure to be made with kids in tow.Finding the right car for a family depends on a host of fac-tors, as what makes a good vehicle for one family will not always make a great choice for another family right down the street. When choosing a car for their families, parents can consider the following factors to ensure they choose the vehicles that best suit the needs of their broods.

CostWhile cost should not be the only consideration when choosing a family vehicle, parents must determine their budget before beginning their search for a new ride. Aside from a home, cars are the most expensive purchase many people will ever make, which only highlights the impor-tance parents must place on finding the right vehicles for their families. Luxury cars, SUVs and sports cars tend to be the most expensive vehicles on the market, and young parents just starting out or parents of school-aged kids with college educations to consider might find that less expen-sive vehicles make the most practical sense for their families. Parents also must determine if they are financing or leas-ing their vehicles or buying them outright. Financing and leasing often requires full insurance coverage, which can be pricey, while buying outright affords vehicle owners to choose the level of coverage they are most comfortable with. Determine insurance costs on a given model before driving off the lot with the pedal to the metal.

Family sizeThe size and potential size of the family also must be consid-ered before buying a new car. Kids grow up and get bigger, and parents who want to have more children down the road should consider just how big they want their family to be before buying a new car. Look for a car that not only suits your family now, but one that will cater to your family’s needs down the road as well. Overlooking this important factor now may force you to replace the car you ultimately buy sooner than you had hoped.

SafetySafety is the top priority for many parents as they purchase new cars for their families. Look for a car with a high safe-ty rating and a proven track record of ensuring passengers survive accidents. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safe-ty (www.iihs.org) as well as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (www.nhtsa.gov) test and rate new vehicles for safety, and parents should look up the results of these tests and ratings on any vehicle they are considering purchasing for their families.

UseFamily cars are rarely limited to getting mom or dad to and from work and for trips to the grocery store. Today’s kids are more active than ever before, and chances are their schedules are as packed as their parents’. Consider the many chauffeuring trips you will have to make in the years to come, and choose a car that is equipped to han-dle those trips. Parents who double as soccer coaches may benefit from buying minivans that can easily store all that sports equipment, while those whose children participate in activities that take them far and wide may want a car that’s especially fuel efficient.

Finding the right family car

Weekend road trip tips

A long weekend provides the perfect opportunity to hop into the car and embark on a road trip. Sometimes it doesn’t take an extended vacation to recharge your batteries. A brief change of scenery and venue can make for quite the respite as well.Road trips also tend to be more affordable than lon-ger getaways. If you have

the benefit of a tow hitch and a camper, you already have your accommodations. But even if you still need lodging, there are several budget motels that can fit the bill for overnight lodging along your route. Here are some other road trip tips.* Before embarking, take out a map and plan your excur-sion. Stick to locations that are within reasonable driving distance from home. If you roam too far, you will spend more time behind the wheel than you will enjoying your destination. Locations no more than five to six hours away should suffice. * Get your vehicle in road trip shape by ensuring it is in good working condition. If your car is scheduled for an oil change, get one before leaving. In addition, top off fluids and be sure that tires are properly inflated.* Stick to the scenic routes. While they may not save you travel time, avoiding interstates in favor of picturesque backroads will make for a much more relaxing and visually inspiring trip. Schedule rest stops so you can get out of the car and explore along the way to your destination. Taking backroads may also help you avoid some of your fellow

weekend travelers.* Make your long weekend a Saturday through Monday affair. You may find the roads are more con-gested Friday through Sunday. Simply starting your trip on Saturday and returning on Monday could save you the headache of driving in heavy traffic.* Scope out low-cost activities at your destination. Many national parks are inexpensive and may only charge one fee per vehicle to enter. After Labor Day, many beaches no longer charge entry fees, making them an affordable option.Take advantage of cooler temperatures and picturesque scenery by planning an autumn weekend road trip.

“Curb appeal” is a term often associated with sell-ing a house. Homeowners selling their homes want to improve their home’s external appearance so it creates a stronger first impression when prospective buyers first pull up to the curb for an open house or a visit with their realtor. But while curb appeal is often uttered in real estate parlance, the term also is applicable when selling cars. Private sellers want to make their vehicles look as nice as possible, giving it the kind of curb ap-peal that impresses potential buyers the moment they see the vehicle. Improving a car’s curb appeal typically doesn’t require as much work as doing the same for a home, but the following are a few ways sellers can improve the look of their vehicles in an attempt to impress prospective buyers.• Give the car a good wash. The easiest way to im-prove how a car looks from the outside is to wash and wax it. Sellers should make this part of their vehicle maintenance routine until the car is sold. If you’re driving the car while you’re attempting to sell it, wash and wax the vehicle each week. Always wash the car before a prospective buyer is sched-uled to come over and take a look. Spray detailers can be used to give the car some extra sparkle.• Don’t forget the interior. While a car’s exterior contributes heavily to a buyer’s first impression of the vehicle, the interior also bears heavy influence on any potential buyers. Vacuum the vehicle’s inte-rior, including both the floorboards and the seats, and clean the windows and windshields from the inside. Once the cupholders have been vacuumed, clean them with a damp cloth to remove any coffee stains or spots where something may have melted. A dirty interior may make buyers question if the rest of the vehicle, especially what’s under the hood, was properly maintained, so be sure to include this easy step as part of your curb appeal routine. Clean the interior as necessary until the car is sold.• Park the car in the garage. Whether you plan to keep driving the car every day until it’s sold or in-tend to keep it parked until the right buyer comes along, try to park the car in your garage or in some place where it’s protected from the elements. This prevents any additional damage from harsh weath-er and ensures a freshly washed car won’t succumb to falling leaves or other debris that may necessitate another washing.• Clean under the hood. While it’s easy to notice the buildup of dirt and grime on the interior and exte-rior of the vehicle, it’s not as easy to notice any such buildup under the hood. And while sellers may not see such unsightly buildup even when they open their hoods, buyers almost certainly will. Plastic covers are typically placed over the engine on many late model vehicles, and these covers can accumu-late grease and debris over time. A spray cleaner or detailer can remove such buildup to make what’s under the hood as visually impressive as your fresh-ly cleaned interior and exterior.• Clear out the trunk. No buyer wants to pop the trunk and see your golf clubs, beach chairs and cooler. When selling a car, remove all of your per-sonal items from the trunk. This shows prospec-tive buyers how much trunk space your vehicle is equipped with. In addition, an empty trunk will make the car lighter and, as a result, more smooth to drive, something buyers are sure to notice when they take the car out for a test drive. The term “curb appeal” is just as applicable to sell-ing a car as it is to selling a home, and sellers can improve their chances of selling their used vehicles dramatically if they take steps to improve the curb appeal of their cars and trucks.

Curb appeal applies to cars, too

NEED YOUR ENGINE SWAPPED?

Today’s automobiles come with more gadgets than ever before. New car buyers can now choose from a host of amenities geared toward making roads easier to navigate and long trips more comfortable.Whereas nonessential amenities once cost buyers a substantial amount of mon-ey, nowadays many auto manufacturers include options once considered luxuries in their standard packages, meaning more drivers have the chance to enjoy their new vehicles in style. While not all amenities are free, and some may still cost drivers a considerable amount of money, the following are a handful of features drivers may find too irresistible to ignore.• Satellite radio: Satellite radio has been around for awhile, but only recently did it begin to become a standard offering in new vehicles. Drivers who buy a new car may find a deal where their initial satellite radio subscription, whether it’s a few months or a full year, is included in the cost of the vehicle, while others may need to foot the fill for their subscriptions from jump street. • Television: The vehicles of today often mimic mobile entertainment systems, and no such system is complete without television. Built-in televisions are noth-ing new, and many a parent has expressed gratitude that in-car televisions and DVD players can serve as mobile babysitters when taking the kids on long road trips. But some auto manufacturers have begun to offer broadcast television in their vehicles, which is made possible by a built-in television antenna that is capable of picking up nearby channels. • Massaging seats: Heated seats have a reputation of being a luxury well worth the extra investment when buying a new car. But motorists with some extra cash to spend may want to consider massaging seats. Such seats are typically limited to the back-seats, but they work in similar fashion to massaging armchairs. Passengers or even drivers taking a break on a long road tip can jump into the back of their cars, recline the backseat and then enjoy a massage to iron out all those aches and pains that developed over the last several hours traversing the highways.• Adaptive lights: If you’re the type of driver who prefers his or her amenities be more about func-tion than luxury, then adaptive lights might be the perfect feature for you. Adaptive lights may swivel as an automobile turns a corner, making it easier for drivers to see. Some adaptive headlights also can sense darkness, protecting drivers who may be distracted by the amenities inside their vehicles and forget to turn their lights on the moment twilight arrives or the sun sets.Today’s automobiles are a testament to innovation, and drivers may find that certain amenities make driving more enjoyable than ever before.

Fun amenities to consider for your next vehicle
