location of the art centreFinland is the northernmost country of the European Union and has a long border

with Russia. The population is 5.500.000 and the size is 338.000 km² (3x Ohio)Finland is wellknown by its high technology, the excellent education system and is

one of the least corrupt countries of the world.Finland has an industrial economy based on abundant forest resources, capital

investments, and high technology. Traditionally, Finland has been a net importer of capital to finance industrial growth; in recent years it has become a net exporter of capital. Finland has one of the best performing economies in the EU and Europe. (http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/3238.htm)

The art centre is in the Eastern part of Finland about 200 km from the Russian border (400 km from St Petersburg and 250 km from Helsinki)

The so called ‘lake district’ has about 87.000 lakes and Haukivuori is situated near Lake Kyyvesi.

The village Haukivuori has 2.300 inhabitants and since January 1st 2007 it is part of the regional capital Mikkeli (40 km South)

The art centre is situated on Saksalanharju a ridge on top of the biggest monolith of Europe. The area is fruitful and already early in history people start to settle.

Saksala area was owned by the Russian officer Hjalmar Bondsdorff, he sold the area in 1913 to the municipal of Haukivuori

The main building is build in 1920 as a rural old people’s home.

In 2003 the Dutch artist Marja de Jong has started the art centre Saksala ArtRadius in the old buildings.

Around the art centre are fields, orchards, forests and the distance to lake is about 4 kilometres.

This rural area has no heavy industry. Agriculture and forestry are the main activities. Mikkeli is the governmental centre and there are universdities, Higher Vocational

Education and other education.

The cultural level is high and during summer there are many festivals in the field of music, opera, ballet, theater and art exhibitions.

The summer is warm and sunny with long days. The winter is cold and there is always snow.

Saksalanharju is together with the original village of Haukivuori = Haukivuori kirkonkyläan official protected nature heritage, because of the drumlin, the landscape and the historical value.

The area on the monolith and around is full of swamps and still peat cutting is important. The swamp fields are remarkable areas in the landscape. When the roots of old trees are put on piles it gives a mysterious feeling. In the swamps in Tuulimiemi are the anual volleyball games.

Agriculture and forestry are the main activities on Saksalanharhuju. The hill is one of most fruitfully of the area.

The ridge Saksalanharju is situted on the biggest monolith of Europe.

- intense dialogue between arts professionals -verbally and visually communication. -during 4-6 weeks-art works, drawings, paintings, installations, side specific art, sculptures, video and a mixed media. -art created by minimum two artists-artists collaborate with each others-challenge and cross the own boundaries in their work and receive new influences.

As a part of the project the artists will also participate, keep and produce together with local and other interested culture workers. That will influence and improve the local craftsmanship and is valuable for the artistic exchange.

The collaboration project –crossroads SAKSALANHARJU–engages international multi-disciplinary dialogue between active arts professionals. Artists from Nordic countries exchange and collaborate with artists from Europe. The artists meet each other on the same crossroad. It is this crossing that identifies the impact of place on an artist’s practice

TURKEY The environment of Cappadocia (Central Turkey) is part of the Silk Road and a unique shaped landscape with historical decorated rock churches and pigeon houses cut in volcanic tufa stone. Cappadocia is an UNESCO world heritage site with open-air museums like underground cities and authentic historical villages, where inhabitants still live the farmer life of hundreds of years ago.

SPAIN The natural environment of the high Catalan Pyrenees Mountains - defined by woods with both conifers and deciduous trees, hay fields, steep pastures and craggy rocks - combines with the authenticity of the cultural, architectural and social heritage. Farrera is the highest village in the Coma de Burg and the first of many written references to Farrera’s existence dates back over 1,000 years, but the original human settlement was undoubtedly founded well before then.

FINLAND The national heritage SAKSALANHARJU-KIRKONKYLÄ, located on the biggest monolith of Europe, is an ancient settlement site. Saksala is an old neighborhood with tranquil landscape, designed with fields, forests and lake. The authentic rural area has a pure and traditional culture, based on agriculture and forestry. The main village Haukivuori has now a days a multicultural mix of inhabitants. http://www.arefs.org/projects/triangle-rock-project.html

ARS•NATURA– pilot project MIKKELIPUISTO and SAKSALANHARJU -

Mikkelipuisto

Mikkelipuisto Park is an entity under construction right near the centre of Mikkeli, and the aim is to turn it into the leading centre for horticultural tourism in Eastern Finland. In the park join the area's varied nature, the recreation areas and the model gardens planned and built by companies. Together these will constitute a high-class visiting attraction for amateurs, professionals, and tourists. The total area of the park that will develop on the lands of the town amounts to 42 hectares.

Saksala ArtRadius Art centre Saksala ArtRadius has the expertise for organizing art symposiums, art commissions and art programs for professional artists. There is a growing international network of art organizations in which Saksala ArtRadius participates. The art centre is also a pioneer of innovative art and cultural tourism. The organization is developing a combination of programs, tenders, projects and events in the field of art and culture for a range of target groups of different cultures and ages. The location on Saksalanharju is becoming a unique cultural area and a meeting point for local and regional people and international visitors for involvement with art, artists, and art activities. The art centre is creating the tools for improving the cultural reputation of the whole region. http://www.arefs.org/projects/mikkelipuisto-saksalanharju.htmlThis project has started in 2009 and will continue in 2010
