Richard ChandlerThe Stages of Fossil Hunting
My involvement with many of my hobbies appears to gothrough 5 stages; fossil hunting seems to naturally be dividedthusly:1. You want to find a fossil, any fossil. This stage lasts until
youvisitaplacewheretheyarecommon, sayAurora.Iwillalways remember my first visit there. When the bus stopped Icouldseerightunderthewindowascallopshellthesizeofadinnerplate.Wow!Onevisittoaplacelikethatandyouinstantly find yourself in the second stage.
2. You want to find as many fossils as possible. You run around, pickingupeverythinginsightandbytheendofthedayyoustaggeroutsoloadeddownyoucanbarelymove.Butyou’rehappyandsopleasedwithyourself-untilyougetbacktothebusandsomeonehasasharktoothasbigasyourhand.Beforeyouleaveyou’vemovedontothenextstage.
3. Youabsolutely,positivelym u s t haveoneofthosebigteeth.Unfortunately,thisstagecanpersistforalongtime.EachtimeyougotoAurorayouarrivefullofhopeandanticipation.Youendthedaydejectedandforlorn-youjustgotbacktothebusandatleast15peoplehave4"+teethandthebestyou’vegotis a lousy 2" mako. Eventually you find the tooth or you give up.Nextyouwantarealchallenge.
4. You want to find something truly rare. After all, 4"+Carcharocles megalodon teethcan’tbeallthatuncommon- 15 people (other than yourself) find one every time you gotoAurora.Yougetveryknowledgeableinverynarrow, precisely defined areas.
