SBCC shake-upAndreea Serban considers new job

BY NICK C. TONKINDAILY SOUND CORRESPONDENT

The effects of November’s shake-upof the Santa Barbara City College Boardof Trustees may be hitting the college’stop job.President Dr.Andreea Serban is a final-

ist for the presidency of Mt. San AntonioCollege.SBCC saw a difficult year in 2010

with the state budget crisis spilling intoall areas of education funding, resultingin cuts that set into motion theNovember upset. In a written statement Thursday,

Serban told The Daily Sound that she hasbeen, and still is, committed to workingwith the board to keep SBCC one of themost highly regarded schools inCalifornia, but hinted that the processmay be rougher than some realize.“To date, these efforts have not result-

ed in the highly collaborative approach acollege president and Board must haveto successfully confront these unprece-dented challenges,” Serban said. “It isnecessary for me to consider all possiblealternatives.”The Board of Trustees appointed

Serban to the position in 2008. Cuts toAdult Education and the board’s per-ceived indifference to the public’s objec-tions sparked a backlash and led to anunprecedented challenge to four incum-bents up for re-election in November. After a tense campaign and extended

vote count, Peter Haslund, MarshaCroninger, Lisa Macker, and formermayor Marty Blum ended up oustingincumbents Desmond O’Neill, JoeDobbs, Kay Alexander, and Sally Green, some of whom had served on the boardsince its inception. The new boardmembers have only been

in offices a few months and most aren’tready to comment on Serban’s attitude.

Board Chairman Peter Haslund saidthere have been rough areas in the transi-tion, but Serban has shown a willingness towork with the board in weekly meetings.Haslund also downplayed the signifi-

cance of Serban’s candidacy for the SanAntonio position, saying there’s nothingunusual about a college president leavingfor another job.“She’s obviously in demand because

she’s a very capable person,” Haslundsaid. “It’s not unusual for college presi-dents to move on if they get a better job.”Haslund credited Serban with creating

strong reserves that could help cushionthe $4-to-$11 million of cuts likely tocome from Sacramento. Those reserves would give the board

more time to come up with alternativespending cuts and receive public feed-back—a key priority the new boardmembers ran on.“Part of our process is to generate

public support for programs that theybadly want to retain,” Haslund said.Marty Blum, whose star power as a

former mayor helped raise the profile ofthe trustee race, said Serban’s applicationto San Antonio was unexpected.Like Haslund, Blum acknowledged

some minor difficulties, but feels it’s fartoo soon to make any final judgments onthe relations.“I was kind of surprised, I thought she

enjoyed this job,” Blum said. “I didn’tknow she was looking for a different job.”Blum said she would be saddened if

Serban doesn’t stay until June when thenew board evaluates her for the firsttime, believing that the board simply has-n’t had the time to sort out every issue.“I’m kind of disappointed in some

way that she hasn’t given us a chance togive an evaluation and get to set somegoals for her and see how we do togeth-er,” Blum said.

Haslund said the board would startsearching for either an interim or fulltime president if Serban leaves but insist-ed it’s too soon to start speculating onpossible replacements without evenknowing if Serban’s been offered the job.Serban herself said she still has the

same enthusiasm for the President’s jobthat she did when she first took office.“Nothing has changed in how posi-

tively I feel about SBCC and the signifi-cant and beneficial impact we make onthe lives of many every day,” Serbansaid.Apart from considering “alternatives,”

Serban otherwise insisted throughout herstatement that she hoped to continue towork with the board to navigate the fiscalcrisis with a minimum effect on students.“I will continue to work towards

developing a positive and collaborativeworking partnership with all Trustees toensure the ongoing success of SBCC,”Serban said. “The college deserves noless.”

Blue Bee was one of a shrinking number ofmom-and-pop style shops on State Street thatdrew reliable customers every year for sales.Blue Bee’s annual jeans sale brought a line ofshoppers that stretched down the street. Manyof those loyal patrons said they would nevershop at a big chain store.Long-time State Street clothing stores and

boutiques have faced stiff competition in thepast year by an influx of retail shops openingup in the downtown area.No less than a dozen retail clothing stores

has opened on State Street in the past 18months in the wake of the recession of 2008that shuttered so many of the store fronts.Along with this, an H&M clothing store is

expected to open in the former Barnes &Noble book shop and nearby at the corner ofCanon Perdido and State streets will be aMarshall’s clothing and accessories outlet inthe former Borders Books Music and Cafébuilding. In the past 15 months, retail clothing stores

or boutiques that have opened or moved onState Street include: G by Guess, Tilly’s,Brown Eyed Girl, Crossroads Trading Co.,The Closet, True Religion Jeans, Forever 21,prAna, La Soie Bridal, Katwalk, Tracy Porterand My Sweet Pineapple.Part of the reason so many more retail out-

lets have flocked to State Street is that the

recession prompted a drop in triple-net leases, which is what tenants pay for use of the storefront, utilities and other services. Those leases have plunged from as high as

$3.25 per square foot during 2006-2007 toalmost $2 per square foot today.

NEWS IN BRIEFGaga may sue over ice creamPop singer Lady Gaga has threatened to sue a specialist ice

cream parlour in London for naming its breast milk ice cream‘Baby Gaga,’ the shop’s owner said on Wednesday.Matt O’Connor, founder of The Icecreamists in London’s Covent

Garden, said he had received a letter from Lady Gaga’s lawyersinforming him that the singer planned to sue him over the name.‘She’s threatening to bankrupt us and she’s also threatening

me personally, saying she’ll seize my personal assets and proper-ty,’ he said. Lady Gaga’s London solicitors, Mishcon de Reya, said they would not comment.O’Connor denied the flamboyant singer—whose meat dress

and other strange outfits have promoted her quirky image anddelighted her fans—had inspired the name he chose for thedessert made from breast milk blended with Madagascan vanillapods and lemon zest.“It’s just the first noise a baby makes—it’s nothing to do with

anyone else,” he said, adding that he was working on a responseto the letter.

Datings golden rule:be straightforward

DEAR MISS KITTY,How much to we owe other

people when we date them?—KS, SANTA BARBARA

Dear KS, I’d rather put ona shamrock green Vegas show-girl costume and sing “TheBest of Carol Channing” atthe Granada in front of apacked house then deal withthis little gem. Why? How wechoose to interact with othersis a very sensitive subject. One person’s deal breakers are

another person’s to do list. After all,how many people know that puttingyour knife and fork together is a silentsignal to a waiter that you have fin-ished your meal? See, the rules thatonce clearly governed so many of ouractions, what divided right and not-quite-as-right are now as blurred asCharlie Sheens vision on a good day.If you are a prize fighter in the ring

you owe it to your gloved competitor tothrow every punch as hard as possible. If you make it too easy and allow himtime to drink a milk shake while loung-ing against the ropes, you will make notonly yourself, but your fellow fighterlook like a loser. With that visual inmind, consider that dating isn’t reallyall that different.Confusion gains a foothold when

there isn’t clarity about just whatkind of “dating rules” one is abidingby. As usual, if all parties are beingconsiderate, there isn’t much toworry about. But it can get confusing when

there is dating differential. For exam-ple, he’s falling in love and makingfuture plans and she is just planningan exit strategy. When she is thinking time to meet

the family and he is thinking time tocall the girl he met last night. For

example if one a guy is on adating site, it is pretty reason-able to assume that there isn’ta Mrs. Hot-As-They-Come athome. One would hope.If both parties know what

they are “supposed” to bedoing and are following setrules, we owe what is clear-ly identified as reasonableand fair in order to have agood time. Sorry, bad choiceof words.

Not so much a good time then as afair playing field in which to engage.Oh, not much better. O.K a safe way toget to know someone without expecta-tions and therefore the nasty andinevitable fall-out from said expecta-tions. After all, expectations are not thesame thing as positive thinking.Nothing really works but being

straight forward all the time. That wealways owe to ourselves and moreoften than not, others as well.Darling K, Boys and Girls,I suppose this is much easier than

my pending question, “is it O.K to dateyour stepmother” (still thinkingthrough THAT one.) but in this casejust follow, the golden rule. Do untoothers as you would have done to you. This only works as long as you have

values in the upper end of the humanerange. I also embrace, the once -in -a -while -wise words of my brother, Mr.Uncle Peter, “It’s never the wrong timeto do the right thing”.Have a naughty day!

Electricalfailure

caused fireDAILYSOUNDSTAFFREPORTFire investigators have determined that

an electrical failure caused a fire thatbadly damaged a Historic SummerlandHome. The fire appeared to start in a closet at

an outlet. A portable heater, extensioncord and power strip were plugged intothe outlet. The outlet, investigators said, was also

covered by clothing and other com-bustibles.

“This was an extremely stubborn fireto suppress,” stated Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Chief Mike Mingee.“There were a number of factors thatmade the fire difficult to locate and extin-guish completely. The amount of com-bustibles stored inside the home, whichincluded many rounds of ammunition, was extreme.”The home was the the original

Summerland Train Station that had beenrelocated to its present site in separateroom pieces in 1955 during the construc-tion of Highway 101.“There were an unusual amount of hid-

den voids between the building compo-nents because of the way it was recon-structed. This was certainly not a typical-ly constructed home or typical house fire,”said Chief Mingee.

An impressive showing of support dur-ing last year’s event has upped the ante. This year’s Teen Star finals tout even

more cache, including a panel of celebri-ty judges (Kenny Loggins, JimmyMessina, J.R. Richards, and CatherineRemak) and an impressive prizecatalogSSue. We Cometo You!

My first attempt at a sar-casm-free day lasted 15 min-utes. That was in 1994.My quest to go a day

without sarcasm has contin-ued for years, but this time Ijust knew it was going to bedifferent. This time I was going to

write about it. I had to makeit, otherwise I’d have to makeup stuff for my column, which I would never do.I fortified myself first

thing in the morning with atriple latte. The connection betweenlack of caffeine and sarcasm is welldocumented, of course, but did youknow that the word “sarcasm” comesfrom the Greek word, “sarkasmos,”which literally means, "ripping offlesh.”Not only is that an apt description

for sarcasm, it is also what I do if Idon’t get my coffee. The challenge started in that long,

long early morning line at Starbucks.Did I mention the line was really, real-ly long? Like long enough for anEnglish Language Learner to havememorized the entire menu by the timeit was their turn to order, only to laterdiscover that “Venti” and“Frappucino” aren’t really English. You would think it wouldn’t be nec-

essary to ask the girl in front of me tostop talking on her cell phone to lookat the menu and decide what she want-

ed. You would think thewords, “Hmm, what do Iwant today?” would nevercome out of the mouth ofsomeone who had been wait-ing in line to order coffee(just make a friggin’ choicealready before my headexplodes) for the past 17minutes.I almost gave up my quest

for a sarcasm-free day rightthen and there. But I took adeep breath and remindedmyself that I had already

beaten my previous sarcasm-freerecord by two minutes just by virtueof waiting in that long line.I felt an inner glow. Why a day without sarcasm? To

prove that I can. Cold turkey. I canstop any time I want to. I’m in control. Not my mouth.I also reminded myself that holding

your tongue for a few minutes is notactually hazardous to your health. My husband brushed his teeth while

I tried to put on makeup. I smiled, andmy husband asked me if I’m feelingokay.I wanted to say, “Fantastic. I love

that we live in a shack with almosthalf a bathroom.” Instead, I bit mytongue until it bleeds. Self-sarkasmos?I’ll try a day without irony anothertime. The rest of my morning went like

that, with a million snippy little com-

ments getting stuck in my throat. I feltlike the Saturday Night Live actorsmust have felt during the writers’ strike. This was my own personal version ofLent.I told my friend Carey what I was

trying to. She didn’t understand whatwas so hard about refraining from sar-casm for a day.Clearly this is a girl who has ani-

mated birds help her get dressed in themorning. Who makes it to 40 withoutlearning some sarcasm?I’m guessing the woodland creatures

that groom her each morning have alsokept her from learning to read. NoVenti for her. Clearly the sar-chasmbetween Carey and I is too deep andwe can no longer be friends.I wonder if there’s a twelve-step

program for me? “My name is Leslie, and I’m a sarcastic.” Yeah right.I know that some people think sar-

casm is mean-spirited or a cheapattempt at humor at someone else’sexpense. Those people are idiots.A day without sarcasm is a day with-

out sunshine, a day without hot runningwater, a day without laughter, a daywithout wine, caffeine or chocolate.A day without sarcasm is a day that

I don’t want to ever experience again.

Leslie believes sarcasm is a sign ofwit, intelligence, and cleverness. Tell herwhat you think by [email protected]. For morecolumns go to www.LeslieDinaberg.com.

got my CD played on the radio, and I got abunch of calls from different organizations.” Life for Lewis is a flurry of performance.

Fresh from an appearance at the La CumbrePlaza, she is now working on a high schoolproduction of Anything Goes and co-directingSongs for a New World.

A LITTLE NIGHT MUSICTalent is an obvious necessity in a singing

competition. This year’s contestants areencouraged to seek vocal coaching and selecta song that reflects their personal spark, range, and style. But the key to success in a competition of

this magnitude rests in the support of a contes-tant’s family and friend network.“It’s not just your big dollar cash prize;”

said Lambert, “it’s really about the whole sup-port system there.”“I just heard a story of a dad who is out of

town, but coming back early so that he can bewith his daughter and support her before theaudition,” said Laura Lewis, Allison’s mother, and newly appointed Teen Star audition coor-dinator. “It’s really sweet.” Support comes in many colors. The buzz

backstage at last year’s Teen Idol Showcasewas palpable. “We were singing songs togeth-er on the piano before the show started,”laughed Lewis.“That’s why we like doing Teen [Star];”

Lambert commented, “because most of thesekids are pulling for each other.”

A CLASS ACTSanta Barbara Teen Star is orchestrated by a

group of well-meaning volunteers, who

earnestly encourage a sense of community anda love of the arts. By volunteering, they ensurethat more benefits are passed on to youth artsprograms. “The funds are going to provide for the

future;” said Laura Lewis, “providing for theyounger kids that will be going into these pro-grams after these kids [like Allison and othercontestants] are gone.”“So, what makes a Teen Idol?” asked

Lambert. “I think it’s somebody who certainlyhas a talent, [but] somebody that someone isgoing to look up to, who has the full package.”“I think [an idol] is somebody who has a

love of performing and sharing their gifts withothers;” said Laura, “who can kind of be agood ambassador for the contest and take itseriously.”“I really, really enjoy seeing kids perform,”

she continued, dreamily, “because it’s a bigrisk for kids to perform. I know they’re mak-ing themselves vulnerable and putting a veryspecial side of themselves out for everyone tosee and hear. And I respect that and I’m veryproud of the kids that do that.” “I hope that singing will definitely be rec-

ognized as a special thing,” said Allison. “Ithink the arts are looked past, [but] it’s such apowerful way of expressing emotions and con-veying thoughts and ideas. It’s such a cool wayto express yourself [and] a fun way to just getthrough life.” To see video footage of last year’s winner,

in the Santa Barbara High School Auditoriumon April 8, 2011. Tickets are $10 for students,$15 for adults and $25 for reserved VIP seat-ing. Visit www.sbteenidol.com for more infor-mation.
