1.0 General

This section is in accordance with ASME Y14.1 Decimal Inch Drawing Sheet Size and Format. See Section 3.0 of this Manual for DoD format requirements. For metric sheet size and format requirements, see Section 3.2 of this Manual. All units in this section are in inches.

1.1 Microfilming and Digital Backup – Microfilming is generally no longer used because the Computer Aided Design (CAD) files are digital. These digital files must be of a format capable of being retrieved during the life cycle of the product.

1.2 CAD File Identifiers – The CAD file name should be placed on the drawing in a location determined by the design department.

1.3 Document Dating – A typical method of dating a document is year, month, and day (05-11-25). The original date shall be retained on redrawn drawings having the same number on all sheets of a multi-sheet drawing, except when a revision adds another sheet a new date shall be used.

2.0 Applicable Documents

ASME Y14.1 Inch Drawing Sheet Size and Format ASME Y14.1M Metric Drawing Sheet Size and Format ASME Y14.2M Line Conventions and Lettering ASME Y14.3M Multiview and Sectional View Drawings ASME Y14.5M Dimensioning and Tolerancing ASME Y14.34M Parts Lists, Data Lists, and Index List ASME Y14.100 Engineering Drawing Practices

3.0 Definitions

3.1 Book-Form Drawing – An 8.5 x 11 inch size format; occasionally with foldouts for wire lists, specifications, processes, printed wiring details, cable drawings, etc.

3.2 Drawing Materials – Drawing material may be of the following:

3.2.1 Paper – No required specification.

3.2.2 Plastic Sheet Masters – L-P-519, Type I or LL, Class 2 (.003 or .004 thick).

3.2.3 Printed Circuit Board Masters – MIL-PRF-5480, Class 3 per L-P-519, Type I or II, Class 1 (.007 thick).

3.3 Drawing Size Letter – A letter used to describe standard format sizes.

3.4 Flat Size – A drawing size that is typically stored in a flat file or a hanging fixture.

Page 16: 03 - Drafting Manual - Decimal Inch Sheet Size and Format

Update 73 Gary Whitmire

DRAFTING MANUAL Decimal Inch Sheet Size and Format

Section 3.1 Page 2

December, 2005

3.5 Multi-sheet Drawing – A drawing having more than one sheet.

3.6 Protective Margins – A two inch or more length added to each end of a roll size drawing in order to protect the drawing when handled and stored.

3.7 Roll Size – A drawing size that is typically stored in a rolled-up condition due to the size and length.

4.0 Drawing Format Practices

The following practices are generally used throughout the United States.

4.1 Drawing Reductions – Copies of drawings are typically reduced to “B” size, to make the drawings easy to work with. The colors of the lines and lettering on CAD drawings should be set to black in order for the reduced copies to be readable. The reduction of the drawings may cause the lines to be too close to each other resulting in an unreadable drawing. In this case, the reduction may not be justified.

4.2 Choosing the Size of the Drawing Format – The drawing size should be large enough so that there is room for drawing notes on the left size of the drawing, and room below the revision block for added revisions. The scale of the drawing should not be too large or too small in order to clearly show the design.

4.3 Continuation Sheets – Continuation sheets of a multi-sheet drawing should be of the same size as sheet one.

4.4 CAD Drawing and File Name – The CAD drawing file name shall be placed near the bottom of the drawing. The CAD software file must be able to be modified for the life of the project, even if the software is updated or discontinued.

4.5 Lettering and Lines – The minimum recommended lettering height is .01 inch for all sheet sizes. A single line style width is permitted for all lines. However, lines commonly have a .024 line width for borders, outlines of blocks, and major segment divisions within the block. All other line widths are .012.

5.0 Drawing Arrangement For Industrial and Aerospace Drawings

5.1 Title Block – The title block is shown in the horizontal direction at the lower right corner of the drawing.

5.2 Revision Block – The revision block is shown in the upper right corner of the drawing.

5.3 General Notes – The general notes are shown on the left side of the drawing. If the drawing general notes are abundant, they may be extended directly to the right, and the drawing may be placed on the second sheet.

5.4 Parts List – The parts list, if applicable, is shown above the title block. If the parts list is abundant, it may be extended directly to the left, and, if needed, the drawing may be placed on the second sheet. If the drawing has a separate parts list, a note “SEE SEPARATE PARTS LIST PL123456-1” is added above the title block.

6.0 Title Block, Supplementary Block, and 3RD Angle Projection Block

The title block size dimensions are for guidance only. The supplementary data block is added to the left of the title block, if required. The 3rd angle projection block may be added to the left of the title block or to the left of the supplementary data block. United States metric drawings shall use 3rd angle projection. See Section 3.2 for drawings being made for use in other countries.

6.1 Title Block Size for “A”, “B”, “C” and “G” Size Drawings – See Figure 1.

6.2 Title Block Size for “D”, “E”, “F”, “H”, “J” and “K” Size Drawings – See Figure 2.

Update 74 Gary Whitmire

DRAFTING MANUAL Metric Sheet Size and Format

Section 3.2 Page 1

June, 2006

1.0 General

This section is in accordance with ASME Y14.1M Metric Drawing Sheet Size and Format. See Section 3.0 of this Manual for DoD format requirements, and Section 3.1 for decimal inch drawing sheet sizes. All units in this section are in millimeters.

1.1 Microfilming and Digital Backup – Microfilming is generally no longer used due to the Computer Aided Design (CAD) files being digital. These digital files must be of a format capable of being retrieved during the life cycle of the product.

1.2 CAD File Identifiers – The CAD file name should be placed on the drawing in a location designated by the design department.

1.3 Document Dating – A typical method of dating a document is year, month, and day (05-11-25). The original date shall be retained on redrawn drawings with the same number on all sheets of a multi-sheet drawing. The exception is that when a revision adds another sheet, a new date shall be used.

2.0 Applicable Documents

ASME Y14.1 Inch Drawing Sheet Size and Format

ASME Y14.1M Metric Drawing Sheet Size and Format

ASME Y14.2M Line Conventions and Lettering

ASME Y14.3M Multiview and Sectional View Drawings

ASME Y14.5M Dimensioning and Tolerancing

ASME Y14.34M Parts Lists, Data Lists, and Index List

ASME Y14.100 Engineering Drawing Practices

3.0 Definitions

3.1 Basic Sheet Sizes – Basic metric sheet sizes are designated by a two-character code. The letter A is always the first character. A number ranging from zero (0) to four (4) is the second character. The number four (4) designates the smallest sheet size in horizontal or vertical format. Each sheet size is twice the area of the previous size.

H = Height, L = length

A4 (vertical) 297 H x 210L

A4 (horizontal) 210H x 297L

A3 297H x 420L

A2 420H x 594L

A1 594H x 841L

A0 841H x 1189L

Page 35: 03 - Drafting Manual - Decimal Inch Sheet Size and Format

Update 74 Gary Whitmire

DRAFTING MANUAL Metric Sheet Size and Format

Section 3.2 Page 2

June, 2006

3.2 Elongated Sheets Sizes – Elongated sheet sizes are designated by a four-character code. The first two characters are the basic sheet size designation. The last two characters are an X and a number. The X indicates that the number in the fourth position is a multiplier. The length of an elongated sheet can be determined by multiplying the shorter sides of the basic sheet dimension by the number following the X. e.g. the vertical A4 size is 297 high by 210 wide. 210 the shorter dimension is multiplied by 3 to get an elongated width of 630 for an A4X3 size.

H = Height, L = length

A4X3 297H x 630L

A4X4 297H x 841L

A4X5 297H x 1051L

A3X3 420H x 891L

A3X4 420H x 1189L

3.3 Extra-Elongated Sheet Sizes – Extra-elongated metric sheet sizes are designated in the same manner as elongated sheets. They are separated into a separate category because of their extra long lengths.

H = Height, L = length

A4X6 297H x 1261L

A4X7 297H x 1471L

A4X8 297H x 1682L

A4X9 297H x 1892L

A3X5 420H x 1486L

A3X6 420H x 1783L

A3X7 420H x 2080L

A2X3 594H x 1261L

A2X4 594H x 1682L

A2X5 594H x 2102L

A1X3 841H x 1783L

A1X4 841H x 2378L

A0X2 1189H x 1682L

A0X3 1189H x 2523L

3.4 Drawing Materials – Drawing material may be of the following:

3.4.1 Paper – No required specification.

3.4.2 Plastic Sheet Masters – L-P-519, Type I or LL, Class 2 (.003 or .004 thick).

Page 36: 03 - Drafting Manual - Decimal Inch Sheet Size and Format

3.4.3 Printed Circuit Board Masters – MIL-PRF-5480, Class 3 per L-P-519, Type I or II, Class 1 (.007 thick).

3.5 Drawing Size Letters - Letters used to describe standard format sizes.

3.6 Flat Size – A drawing size that is typically stored in a flat file or a hanging fixture.

3.7 Multi-sheet Drawing – A drawing having more than one sheet.

3.8 Protective Margins – A 50mm or more length added to each end of a roll size drawing to protect the drawing when handled and stored.

3.8 Roll Size – A drawing size that is typically stored in a rolled-up condition due to its size and length.

4.0 Drawing Format Practices

The following are practices that are generally followed throughout industry within the countries outside the U.S.

4.1 Drawing Reductions – Copies of drawings are typically reduced to make the drawings easy to work with. The colors of the lines and lettering on CAD drawings should be returned to black in order for the reduced-size copies to be readable. The reduction of the drawings may cause the lines to be too close to each other resulting in an unreadable drawing. In this case, the reduction may not be justified.

4.2 Choosing the Size of the Drawing Format – The drawing size should be large enough so that there is room for drawing notes and the revision block for added revisions. The scale of the drawing should not be too large or too small to show the design clearly.

4.5 Lettering and Lines – The minimum recommended lettering height is 2.5mm for all sheet sizes. A single line style width is permitted for all lines, however, contrasting line are more common with a .6 line width for borders, outlines of blocks, and major segment divisions within the block. All other line widths should be .3.

5.0 Drawing Arrangement For Industrial and Aerospace Type Drawings

5.1 Title Block – The title block is shown in the horizontal direction at the lower right corner of the drawing.

5.2 Revision Block – The revision block is shown in the upper right corner of the drawing.

Section 3.2 Page 4

5.3 General Notes – General notes are shown on the left or right side of the drawing. If the drawing general notes are abundant, they may be extended towards the middle of the drawing, or they may be placed on the second sheet.

5.4 Parts List – The parts list, if applicable, is shown above the title block. If the parts list is abundant, it may be extended directly to the left and, if needed, it may be placed on the second sheet. If the drawing has a separate parts list, a note “SEE SEPARATE PARTS LIST PL123456-1” is added above the title block.

6.0 Title Block, Supplementary Data Block, and 3rd Angle Projection Block

The title block size dimensions are for guidance only. The supplementary data block, if required, is added to the left of the title block. The 3rd angle projection block may be added to the left of the title block or to the left of the supplementary data block. United States metric drawings shall used 3rd angle projection.

6.1 Title Block Size for “A2”, “A3”, and “A4” Size Drawings – See Figure 1.

6.2 Title Block Size for “A0”, and “A1” Size Drawings – See Figure 2.

1.0 GENERAL

1.1 To facilitate folding, the original tracing should indicatefold marks in the margin of the standard cut sheet sizeexcept “A” size. However, if copies will be foldedmechanically, i.e., by folding machines, fold marks are necessary except for the vertical folds if the machines not have that capability.

2.0 BASIS OF FOLD MARKS

2.1 The easiest kind of fold is the fan fold. The advantage fan folding is that the print is more easily handled on thshop floor and in the field. Fold marks are usually indi-cated in the horizontal margins of the drawing form inincrements of 8.5 inches and in the vertical margin in

GENIUM P

,

increments of 11.0 inches to the extent consistent with thdisplay of the drawing number in the file. Figure 1illustrates the method of folding all standard cut sheetsizes. Extended sizes should also be folded in similarfashion.

2.2 Extended sizes should have fold marks shown in the samincrements as cut sheet sizes.

2.3 The fold mark designation that should be observed for acut sheet sizes and extended sizes is shown in SectionK3.1.

3.0 REDUCED-SIZE COPIES

3.1 If reduced-size prints are normally produced, the practicshown in Figure 1 should also be observed.
