Alt Empordà. This is a county in the northeast corner of the Iberian Peninsula,

where the Costa Brava begins. To the north, the county borders on the eastern

end of the Pyrenees, which reach the sea at steep and rocky Cape Creus. Alt

Empordà is the easternmost county in the Catalan Pyrenees, its climate

favouring the natural presence of typical Mediterranean vegetation. The capital

is Figueres.

Garrotxa. This county straddles the mountains and the plains, volcanic lands

which run down from the Pyrenees to the Cordillera Transversal mountain

range. Most of the territory is at an average altitude of below 600 metres, with

maximum heights below 1,600 metres. An outstanding attraction in Garrotxa

county is the town of Besalú, with its superb medieval architectural heritage.

The capital, Olot, stands close to the famous beech forest known as La Fageda

d’en Jordà.

The Croscat Volcano is Strombolian in type. Its horseshoe-shaped crater, 600 m longand 350 m wide, is not visible from any point along our route. Due to quarrying forlapilli over many years, a huge crack more than 100 m deep and 500 m long has

formed. The quarrying finally came to an end in 1991 when the Catalan government bought out the miningcompany.

Access to the Croscat Volcano is regulated and controlled, andvisitors are required to respect opening times and follow theinstructions posted on information panels inside the Natural Park.Guidebooks and other publications are available from Can Passavent.

Our route starts at the Santa Margarida picnic area. Crossing theGI-524 Olot-Santa Pau road, follow the signs to the CroscatVolcano. Passing through Masnou, we find a turn-off on the leftwhich leads us to Can Passavent, the Natural Park’s receptionand information centre.

The Croscat Volcano ON FOOT: VERY EASY / DISTANCE: 2.9 km / DURATION: 45 min

Fageda d’en Jordà is a beech forest growing on the lava flows from the CroscatVolcano. Its relief is gently undulating, with small hills known locally as tossols. The landscape changes greatly here from one season to another, with reddish tonespredominating in autumn, grey in winter and fresh shades in summer. Besides beech, there are oak and holly trees which also grow in the sunnier parts of the forest.

Leaving the Can Serra car park (4 kmalong the GI-524 Olot-Santa Pau road)

southwards, we cross the road. On theother side are the steps leading down into the beech forest and,on the right, a monument erected in memory of the poet JoanMaragall, inscribed with the famous poem this forest inspiredhim to write.

Going down the steps, we find the path leading into the forest, which forms a loop through the forest and takes you back tothe car park.

Ripollès. This is a Pyrenean county perched amongst the high peaks near the

border with France, including Mount Puigmal. Ripollès county straddles two

valleys: the Vall de Ribes (watered by the River Freser) and Vall de Camprodon

(through which the River Ter flows). Apart from the outstanding cultural heritage

in the capital, Ripoll, other important sights include two valleys, Vall de Camprodon

and Vall de Núria, whilst a visit to the Romanesque village of Sant Joan de les

Abadesses in also outstanding.

Cerdanya. This county, as charming as it is small and traversed by the Segre

River Valley, conserves a great artistic heritage. Gazing down on the plain from

the peaks here, we can discover marvellous nooks and crannies that invite us to

rest and relax, take a stroll or sit in contemplation. Lakes, green valleys, steep

mountainsides and prodigious, unspoilt natural beauty need to be admired in

silence and without hurry. The capital of Cerdanya county is Puigcerdà. Winter

sports fans will find all they need in La Molina, La Masella, Lles de Cerdanya,

Aransa and Guils Fontanera.

Alt Urgell and Pallars SobiràLa Seu d’Urgell - Sort

Alt Urgell. In this county where natural beauty and historic interest live in perfect

harmony, the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park lies in the Segre Valley between the High

Pyrenees and the Sierra del Cadí mountain range. This county is also home the

Alt Pirineu Natural Park. The capital, La Seu d’Urgell, looks out on a great mountain

plateau where all the main routes into the Pyrenees meet. Our route will lead us

to discover countless unique, impressive natural beauty spots.

Pallars Sobirà. Running through this county and surrounded by snow-topped

mountains and lush, green valleys are the rapid, rushing waters of the Noguera

Pallaresa River. To the north are peaks around 3,000 metres, such as the Pica

d’Estats, the highest point in Catalonia. This natural wealth of forms, colours,

sounds and sensations of all kinds provides a superb setting in which to sample

the varied cultural attractions here. The landscape is perhaps the most outstanding

feature and attraction in Pallars Sobirà county, its beauty and diversity giving us

a sense of privilege just to be here. Particularly enjoyable are visits to Aigüestortes

National Park, Lake Sant Maurici and the Alt Pirineu Natural Park. Throughout the

year, this same natural wealth enables the visitor to enjoy a huge range of adventure

sports, particularly at the many ski resorts in the county.

The valleys of Sant Joan, in the municipal borough of Valls de Valira, lie in northwestAlt Urgell, on the border with Andorra and Pallars Sobirà county.

Our route begins in La Seu d’Urgell, from where we take the N-145 road 2 km to thevillage of Anserall on the River Valira. Next, we ascend from La Seu, turning off tothe left. The most interesting monument in Anserall is the old Romanesque Monasteryof Sant Serni de Tavèrnoles (consecrated in 1040).

We now return to the main road until a signpost indicates thatwe should turn off to the left to Cívis. Another 5 km along theCívis road brings us to Argolell, where we can admire theRomanesque Church of Santa Eugènia.

This road follows one of the main routes used by smugglers inthe past. Our visit to Argolell concluded, we retrace our steps backto the crossroads, now taking the road to Sant Joan Fumat, wherewe can see the church.

Further on, in Asnurri, we can stop at the Romanesque Church ofSanta Eulàlia before finally reaching Civís, one of the most attractivevillages in the county, with its typical high mountain architectureand with many houses sporting stone roofs and wooden balconies.

Route throughthe valleys of Sant Joan

This route takes us from east to west, through the valleys of Josa and Vansa, stopping at many historic old Romanesque churches nestling in the mountainlandscape. We shall also pass through lovely green river and forest landscapes in

the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park.

The route begins in Josa. To get here from La Seu d’Urgell, takethe LV-4008 road south, passing through Cerc before coming tothe turn-off to Josa. North of this village stands the RomanesqueChapel of Santa Maria de Josa.

This route begins in La Seu, where we take the C-14 “Eix del Segre” road towardsOrganyà at the southern end of the county. A few kilometres before we reach thistown we can visit “Els Pontarrons”, a site containing remains from the old medievalroad. Here are four bridges, built to cross huge crevasses in the rock.

Organyà, which lies 22 kilometres from La Seud’Urgell, is famous for the book of homilies named after the town. Discoveredin 1905, the Homilies d’Organya constitute one of the oldest literarydocuments written in Catalan. From Organyà, we go on to visit Fígols (2km away), where we can admire the Romanesque Church of Sant Víctor.

Back on the main road again, we continue to Coll de Nargó. This town, along with El Pont de Claverol (Noguera Pallaresa), can rightly be consideredthe capital of the raier (“raft-maker’s”) world. Nowadays, in a bid to revivethis tradition of steering rafts of felled trees downriver, an annual descentis organised, and takes place on the third Sunday in August. Here, too,we can visit the Raier Museum and the Romanesque Church of SantCliment, a monument declared of historic and artistic interest due to itssplendid belltower.

Our route now continues to Oliana, where we find several Romanesque churches: Sant Andreu del Castell (Oliana),Santa Llúcia de Tragó (Peramola), Santa Maria de Castell-Llebre (Peramola) and Sant Serni de la Salsa (Bassella). Finally, we reach our final stop, Mirambell, at the southernmost point in Alt Urgell county, from where we canenjoy unforgettable views over the surrounding countryside.

Route to the southern reaches BY CAR

We now continue along the same road to the crossroads, where we turn off towards Ars. The most outstanding monumentin this village is the Romanesque Church of Sant Martí, with its cylindrical belltower, one of very few in the Pyrenees.Leaving Ars, the beaten earth track leads to Ras de Conques, where we can gaze on the Tarter dels Minairons, a greatrock mass which, according to legend, was made by the “Minairons”, superhumanly strong “little people” who depositedall the rocks in this area. We now return along the same road that we took to complete this fascinating route.

festival which takes place here on the Feast of Saint John. Ascending,we pass through the second village on the way, beside the reservoir. The two starting points on this route are Plaça Major in Borénand the Romanesque bridge in Àrreu, which stands beside theIsil road, around 200 m from Borén.

The hike is made particularly enjoyable by the splendid viewsand the chance to visit the village of Àrreu. Along the way, wecan see the Church of Sant Martí in Borén, the Chapel of La Marede Déu de les Neus, the remains of Àrreu Castle, the village ofLes Bordes d’Àrreu and the medieval bridge in Borén. Route ofthe Lovers ON FOOT: MEDIUM DIFFICULTY / DISTANCE: 3.7 km / DURATION: 1 h 30 min

Recommended all year round, this is a fascinating journey to visit much of the richnatural and cultural heritage in Vall de Cardós. Visitors should remember that this

is not a round route. It starts and ends at different points, andthis should be taken into account for the return journey.

We enter the Vall de Cardós from Llavorsí, taking the L-504 roadthat runs through the valley to Tavascan. There is access by roadto all the townships along this route.

From Ainet de Cardós, it is well worth making a 20-minute detourto see the remains of the fortified castle of Pui, perched on ahill on the right-hand side of the valley and commandingmagnificent views. The sights we shall see along the rest of theroute include architecturally interesting medieval bridges andtypical mountain villages. Another possible detour is the visitto the picturesque village of Esterri de Cardós.

This route is the most popular in thecounty, recently made well-knownthanks to Carlos Porta’s book Trece

familias y tres muertos (“Thirteen Families and Three Deaths”).From Llavorsí, we take the L-510 local road to Alins. We findthe sign indicating the start of the path just 1 km along the roadfrom Alins to Àreu, and we can leave the car at this point.

The route can be recommended all year round, except snowyperiods in winter and spring. People not used to walking areadvised to allow a full day to complete the route. The return routeis the same as that taken for the ascent. It is possible to book ataxi from Alins for the return. Moreover, by approaching the routethe other way round, the path is made flatter and easier.

There are various truly spectacular sections between Norís andTor, with breathtaking paths over the top of the canyon. According to legend, a priest crossing the canyon onhorseback promised that, if he emerged unharmed, he would commemorate the feat with an inscription. Strangelyenough, there is a rock along the way engraved with the words “If I escape from this and do not die, never againneither bears nor bulls”, in a reference to the inhabitants of Os, Civís and Tor.

This route features the finest panoramic views to be found anywhere in the Pyrenees, showing us the differentarchitecture found in villages along the way, as well as cattle tracks and high mountain scenery.

Route to the “cursed”Mountain of Tor ON FOOT: VERY DIFFICULT / DISTANCE: 8 km / DURATION: 4h

According to legend, the lord of Àrreu built a high tower in his castle in which to lock away his daughter whenhe found out that she had fallen in love with a young Moorish man. He kept her imprisoned here until, one darknight, the young man climbed the tower wall in order to rescue his beloved. The next day, the lord set out torecover his daughter, abandoning all his possessions. The legend does not tell us whether he found her or whetherthe young couple lived happily ever after. To find out, you have to complete the route.

The route is ideal at any time of year, except the winter season, when snow can be heavy along the way.

Alta Ribagorça. It hides one of the most important treasures of Catalan

Romanesque style architecture: the Romanesque churches of the Vall de Boí,

which have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Snow-capped

mountains, green valleys watered by winding, crystal-clear rivers and countless

picturesque landscapes of unique beauty, such as the Vall de Boí. Altogether, this

is an irresistible invitation to enjoy nature and discover the most magnificent

beauty spots. Along with Pallars Sobirà, Alta Ribagorça county shares the fantastic

Aigüestortes i Lllac de Sant Maurici National Park, whilst the activities available

include mountain sports, adventure sports and, of course, skiing.

Pallars Jussà. This county straddles the high Pyrenean peaks and the vast

Sierra del Montsec mountain range. The landscape here is a prodigy of beauty

and colour, including whitewater, peaceful rivers, lakes and pools, high peaks and

deep valleys. All this makes Pallars Jussà the perfect setting for open-air activities,

from extreme adventure sports to the most gentle and relaxing pursuits. In Vall

Fosca, a mountain cable car waits to carry us up the winding Gento Lake Valley

to the high mountain lakes.

Alta Ribagorça boasts one of the most important series of Romanesque churches inthe world. UNESCO proclaimed the Vall de Boí Romanesque site as World Heritagein 2000. There are eight churches and one chapel in this valley: La Assumpció deCóll, Santa Maria de Cardet, Sant Feliu de Barruera, La Nativitat de Durro, the Hermitageof Sant Quirc Durro, the Chapel of Santa Eulàlia d'Erill la Vall, Sant Joan de Boí,Santa Maria de Taüll and Sant Climent de Taüll.

The Vall de Boí Romanesque Centre is the entity responsible for managing this Romanesque complex. Thecentre's main functions are opening the churches to the publicthroughout the year, guided tours, promotion of the complexand the visitor service. We recommend our guided tour servicewith specialised guides to explain this heritage. You can alsovisit the churches on your own.

Our route begins in El Pont de Suert, taking the N-230 road north, turning off after 2 km onto the L-500 to Vall de Boí.Our first stop is in Cóll, where we can visit the Church of LaAssumpció. Returning to the main road, we turn left at thecrossroads, making for the village of Cardet to see the Church ofSanta Maria. Next, km 12 brings us to Barruera, site of the Churchof Sant Feliu. From here we turn off onto a minor road, after whichanother 3 km brings us to the tiny village of Durro and the Churchof La Nativitat de la Mare de Déu. From here, a track leads upthe mountainside to the Chapel of Sant Quirc, which commands magnificent views of the surrounding countryside.

To admire the majestic belltower of the Church of Santa Eulàlia, we now need to return to the main road, turningleft at the crossroads at km 15.5 to reach the village of Erill la Vall, then travel along the L-500 until the crossingof the L-501 and continue up to Boí to see the beautiful Church of Sant Joan before continuing onwards oncemore to Taüll. This town boasts the two best-known monumental sites in the whole valley: the Church of SantaMaria and the Church of Sant Climent.
