Happy March! Coming out of a month of historic rainfall, I’m looking forward to the start of spring this month! March also ushers in our return to Daylight Savings Time, so be sure to “Spring Forward” on March 10th!

And just in time for spring, Ellen HopeKearns, HBCOA board member and Travel Program coordinator, has planned a wonderful outing to the Wisteria Vine Festival later this month. This looks to be a delightful excursion. Not traveled on a day trip yet? HBCOA members get a discount, so sign-up for these special events in the Travel and Resource Room.

Finally, I ask that you take time this month to thank a volunteer, whether at the Senior Center in Central Park or in any other part of the community. And if you are a volunteer, we THANK YOU! Without the caring, talented and dedicated volunteers at the Center, we could not do all that we do for those we are privileged to serve.

Have a blessed spring! Beth Hambelton

After the death of his father, T’Challa (Chatwick Boseman) returns home to the Africa nation of Wakanda to take

his place as king. When a powerful enemy reappears, T’Challah’s mettle as king-and as Black Panther– gets tested when he’s drawn into a conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the world at risk. Faced with

treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people. 135 minutes. Rated PG-13 for prolonged sequences of action violence and brief rude gestures. Based on a true story, a small town EMT named Susette Kelo (Catherine Keener) leaves a bad marriage and starts over in a new town. She buys a rundown cottage with a gorgeous water view. She fixes it up and paints it pink. Then she discovers that powerful politicians want to bulldoze her blue collar neighborhood for the benefit of pharmaceutical giant Pfizer. Suzette emerges as the reluctant leader of her neighbors in an epic battle that goes all the way to the supreme court and helps millions of Americans protect their homes. 98 minutes. Not rated.

Dr. Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) is a world-class African-American pianist, who is about to embark on a

concert tour in the Deep South in 1962. In need of a driver and protection, Shirley recruits Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen), a tough-talking bouncer from an Italian-American neighborhood in the Bronx.

Despite their differences, the two men soon develop an unexpected bond while confronting racism and danger in an era of segregation. 130 minutes. Rated PG-13 for thematic content, language including racial epithets, smoking, some violence, and suggestive material. Director Damien Chazelle and star Ryan Gosling reteam for Universal pictures ‘First Man’ the riveting story of NASA’s mission to land a man on the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong and the years 1961-1969. A visceral, first-person account, based on the book by James R. Hansen, the movie will explore the sacrifices and the cost on Armstrong and on the nation of one of the most dangerous missions in history. 138 minutes. PG-13 for some thematic content involving peril, and brief strong language.

Trip Schedule Available at the Senior Center Register in advance at the Senior Center. Unless noted, trips depart from the HB Sports Complex. For information or special accommodations call 714-374-1572 or go to www.hbcoa.org

Greetings! Welcome to the Senior Center in Central Park. With glimpses of Spring all around, take some time to appreciate all the color! Spring classes start this month – peruse the SANDS (hbsands.org) for a complete rundown of our classes, workshops, and lectures. The Center offers a free fitness class Monday and Wednesday mornings with Longevity Stick. Craft classes like Morning Masterpiece and Cardkateers have a small enrollment fee ($10) for the season – that is almost a dollar a class! If you have always admired Hawaiian quilts and wanted to know how they are made, check out the Traditional Hawaiian Applique class on Wednesday afternoons. We are excited about our new Behind the Classics film series taught by Theo Siegel. Monday, March 11 at 5:30 PM, Theo will screen “Singing in the Rain,” one of the greatest movie musicals of all time. If you feel like going inward – we are offering something new this spring. Introduction to Mindfulness – Practicing Presence will teaches participants how to experience calm and ease by remaining present in the moment. This is just a small sampling of the excitement you may find at the Senior Center in Central Park. Card games, table tennis, movies, lifelong learning and the Hoag Wellness Pavilion may be the reason over 500 people come into the Center every day! See you at the movies! Reverse Dementia With Diet? She Did… When Mark Hatzer’s 82-year-old mother, Sylvia, no longer recognized him due to her Alzheimer’s progression, he felt like his life had reached a new low. Sylvia’s condition was so severe that she was hospitalized for her own safety. However, with a change in her diet came a drastic change in her ability to remember. After implementing a Mediterranean-style diet and brain boosting foods into her life, Sylvia and her son noticed a reversal effect on Sylvia’s dementia. The mother and son began focusing on foods such as, blueberries, strawberries, Brazil nuts, walnuts, broccoli, kale, spinach, sunflower seeds, green tea, oats, and sweet potatoes. As a treat, they indulged in dark chocolate with a high cocoa content. In addition to the diet change, Sylvia and Mark worked on cognitive exercises such as jigsaws and cross words, socializing, and pedaling exercises in her chair. Sylvia is a living testament that diet can change lives and improve health, even in the most drastic of ways. Source: https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/82-year-old-
