    Arabic.

    Memorize word for word meanings of each

    Wa-yaqoolana: The hypocrites say -------

    to the Prophet (pbuh).

    Why is Qur’an calling hypocrites non-

    believers here? This is because they do

    not act on what they say they believe in.

    There imaan is weak.

    What is imaan? It is to accept, submit and

    act.

    Submission and action is a proof of one’s

    imaan (belief).

    There are three kinds of people

    1. Who believe in everything about

    Islam.

    2. Who do not believe at all.

    3. Who believe in some and do not

    believe in some. These are those

    about which no one except Allah (swt)

    knows if they are Mo’mins or not.

    When a person believes in one God, does it make him a Mo’min. No.

    This is because the Arabs believed in one God but they did not accept or submit

    or act on Allah’s commands.Verse 47

    du’uu illalahi wa rasulihi…. Obeying

    the Prophet’s decisions was not only for

    the time when he (pbuh) was alive but it

    is for ever.

    When Prophet (pbuh) went to Medina

    from Mecca he was chosen as the head

    of Medina. Medina had become a Muslim

    state. Everyone was supposed to take

    their problems, disputes to him. The true

    believers used to go to the Prophet

    (pbuh). The People of the Book were

    given the choice to go to their own chiefs

    if they wanted to. But their was a third

    group in Medina these were the Munafiqs

    who would only go to him if they thought

    he would decide in their favor.

    There were three conditions in Medina?

    1. If there was a dispute they were to go to the Prophet (pbuh).

    2. When he (pbuh) made a decision it was to be accepted wholeheartedly.

    3. The Prophet’s command was to be implemented.Verse 48

  • What is the difference between …. َيَتَولَّى and َْعِرُضون مُّ

    Verse 47. َُّسوِل َوأََطْعَنا ُثم ِ َوِبالرَّ ا ِباَّللَّ ن َبْعِد ذلَِك َوَمآ َيَتَولَّىَوِيقُولُوَن آَمنَّ ْنُهْم مِّ َفِريٌق مِّ

    أُْولَـِئَك ِباْلُمْؤِمِنينَ

    Verse 48. َْنُهْم إَِذاو ِ َوَرُسولِِه لَِيْحُكَم َبْيَنُهْم إَِذا َفِريٌق مِّ ْعِرُضونَ ُدُعوْا إِلَى َّللاَّ مُّBoth words mean to turn away.

    Tawalli. To turn away one’s body. Ma’uridun. Turning away of one’s heart.

    Notice how in Arabic du’uu is in tathniya (dual) but “liyahkuma” means

    he decides. This shows that decision is to be taken by the Prophet (pbuh).

    Also the proof of this is in Qur’an which states that to obey Allah (swt) one

    must obey the Prophet (pbuh).

    Idhaa. Means instant action.

    Why is it that a person fails to act instantly to Allah’s command? When

    a person does not submit with his heart , his acceptance is not instant.

    Allah (swt) does not give him the taufeeq to act.

    Imaan is to accept, submit and act.Verse 48

    If the ruling will be in their favor and

    not against them, then they will come

    and will listen and obey, which is what

    is meant by the phrase ( ُمْذِعنِين (willingly

    with submission).

    But if the ruling will go against him, he

    turns away and demands something

    that goes against the truth, and he

    prefers to refer for judgment to

    someone other than the Prophet so that

    his false claims may prevail.

    His acceptance in the beginning was

    not because he believed that it was the

    truth, but because it happened to be in

    accordance with his desires. So when

    the truth went against what he was

    hoping for, he turned away from it.

    Today people look for logical reasoning in

    all commands of Allah (swt).

    Verses 49-50

    Root of mudhi’nin is (meem

    dhal, nun). It means to

    hasten in submission and

    obedience.

    We see two kinds of human attitudes in

    Qur’an. One is when Ibrahim tells his

    son that he has been commanded to

    slaughter him. The son does not argue

    and obeys his father and then in the

    story of Bani Israel we see them arguing

    with Musa about the cow. We should

    check our selves. What is our attitude?

    Is it of Ismail or Bani Israel!

    What are some of the diseases

    of the heart? Nifaaq (hypocrisy),

    doubt, love of the world, careless

    attitude.

    What was their doubt? They

    thought that Allah (swt) and His

    prophet will deal with them

    unjustly.

    What stops us from obeying

    Allah (swt)? Diseases of the heart,

    doubts about Allah (swt) and His

    Prophet (pbuh).

    Those who think that Allah (swt)

    and Prophet (pbuh) are unjust are

    the wrongdoers themselves.

    Verse 50

    Root of yaheefa is ya ha fa.

    It means to shorten

    something from the edges.

    It means to be unjust.

    What is Falaah (muflihoon)? It is

    to be saved from something that is

    “mukruh” (something that

    displeases Allah (swt)) and to do

    what is right.“Duf’il mukruh wa husoolil mutloob”

    This is true success which can only be

    achieved through struggle.

    One needs to obey Allah (swt) to get

    everything rightly done. And leave

    everything that leads to Hell.

    Notice how “dhameer hassr” and

    “takeed” is used in Arabic, it is used in

    verse 50 and 51. Hum zalimun and

    hum muflihun. Telling us the qualiteis of

    the two groups.

    The real reason behind one’s weak will

    is actually weak imaan. Diseases of the

    hearts only enter a heart with weak

    imaan.To be Muflihun: Adopt Good habits and leave bad habits.

    Verse 51

  • Concerning the Ayah: ا ْعن أ ط ا و ِمْعن قُولُوا س Qatadah أ ن ي said: "We were told that when Ubadah bin As-Samit, who had been present at Al-

    Aqabah and at Badr, and was one of the leaders of the Ansar, was dying, he

    said to his nephew Junadah bin Abi Umayyah: `Shall I not tell you what you must

    do and what is your due!'

    He said, `Yes.' He said:

    `You have to listen and obey when times are easy and when they are hard, when

    you feel energetic and when you do not want to, and when you feel selfish.

    You have to train your tongue to speak the truth.

    Do not go against those who are in authority, unless they openly command you to

    commit acts of disobedience to Allah.

    Whenever you are commanded to do something that goes against the Book of

    Allah, then follow the Book of Allah.'''

    We often hear people say that a certain person is very kind and generous never

    mind if he is regular in prayers or not. This is not the sign of a successful person

    near Allah (swt). For one to be successful one has to do what Allah (swt) has

    commanded us to do and to abstain from everything that is wrong.

    It is just like when a person gets sick, a doctor prescribes a medicine and also

    advises the patient to stay away from food that is harmful for him.

    Note how we are sometimes helping people at one time and the next moment we

    are backbiting!

    Verse 51

    Note how the next stage of muflaihun is faai’zun.

    What do we need to become faai’zun?

    We need Taqwa.

    What is taqwa? To be conscious. To try to not to

    do things that destroy our imaan and deeds.

    Verse 52 is further explain verse 51 and bringing

    out a clear concept of a successful person.

    We see “khashiyah” and “taqwa” mentioend in

    verse 52. Both are forms of worship.

    Sometimes we translate taqwa as fear of Allah (swt)

    and khashiya is also fear. What is the difference

    between these two kinds of fears? “Khashiya”

    comes from knowledge, realization of someone's

    greatness, respect. When we fear something there

    is no respect in it. Khashiyutt is to be afraid due to

    respect.

    It is said about the Prophet (pbuh) that when people

    used to meet him for the first time they would be

    afraid of him but later when they get to know him

    they would love him for his gentleness. In the same

    we fear Allah (swt) when we think of His greatness

    but love him when we realize how many blessings

    He has bestowed on us. One cannot have taqwa

    unless one has khashiya and one cannot obey Allah

    (swt) and His prophet unless one has taqwa.

    •Fear is generally a great motivational factor behind actions.

    Surah Nur has many verses which mention

    obedience to Allah and His messenger.

    Verse 53

    .

    There are four parts of “Qasm”.

    Muqsim bih: the one in whose name

    swearing is being done. In verse 54, it is

    “Allah”

    Muqsim illayh: On what one is swearing

    Harf e Qasm: . In verse 54, it is

    “billahi.”

    Fayl e Qasm: In this verse it is “wa

    aqsamu”

    What kind of command is mentioned in

    “Amartahum” ? The command for

    Jihaad.

    Verse 53

    The hypcrites used to swear that when

    there will be time to fight they would go

    out and fight and when they were called

    to fight they would not come out. Allah

    (swt) is telling them not to swear and lie.

    Allah (swt) does not want swearing.

    Allah (swt) wants to see actions.

    Those who have intention to act don’t talk too much. They act. It is only the lazy

    ones who swear and lie and when it is time to act they run away.

    What was the burden that the Prophet

    (pbuh) was made to carry?

    It was the burden of spreading the

    message.

    What is the burden on us as Muslims?

    It is iman (belief) and Itta’ut

    (obedience).

    This is like the Ayat:

    َما َعلَْيَك اْلَبلَـُغ َوَعلَْيَنا اْلِحَسابُ َفإِنَّyour duty is only to convey and on Us is the

    reckoning. (13:40)

    ٌر َمآ أَنَت ُمَذكِّ ْر إِنَّ َفَذكِّ

    لَّْسَت َعلَْيِهم ِبُمَسْيِطر So remind them -- you are only one who

    reminds. You are not a dictator over them.

    (88:21-22)

    What is hidayaah (guidance)? It is to

    strive on the right path (siraat ul

    mustaqeem) in order to achieve one's

    goal—Allah’s (swt) approval, Jannah.

    Surah An Nur repeatedly mentions “ayaatim mubayanaat” and “nur”. Which shows how

    everything is clearly explained. All one has to do is to obey.Verse 54

    This verse gives us glad tidings of ruler ship

    on Earth. What is the link between this verse

    and what we read before? A person’s

    greatest fear is that he will loose his

    relatives, friends, job status if he obeyed

    Allah and His messenger. And it does

    happen. But this does not last long. Those

    who obey Allah (swt) get their reward in the

    hereafter and in this world too. This is Allah’s

    promise.

    This Ayah is like the Ayah:

    فُون فِى االٌّْرِض ْضع ْست اْذُكُروْا إِْذ أ نُتْم ق لِيلٌ مُّ و And remember when you were few and

    were reckoned weak in the land) Until His

    statement: ْشُكُرون لَُّكْم ت so that you might be ل ع

    grateful. (8:26)

    Ar-Rabi` bin Anas narrated that Abu Al-Aliyah said,

    "The Prophet and his Companions were in Makkah for nearly ten years, calling people in secret to

    worship Allah Alone with no partner or associate. They were in a state of fear and were not instructed to

    fight until after they were commanded to migrate to Al-Madinah. When they came to Al-Madinah, then

    Allah instructed them to fight. In Al-Madinah they were afraid and they carried their weapons morning and

    evening. This is how they remained for as long as Allah willed...''

    Then Allah revealed this Ayah. He caused His Prophet to prevail over the Arabian Peninsula, and then

    they felt safe and put down their weapons. Then Allah took His Prophet and they remained safe

    throughout the time of Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman,

    Verse 55

  • Hadith

    As the Messenger of Allah said to Adiyy bin Hatim when he came to him in a delegation:

    ة ؟ ْعِرُف اْلِحير أ ت Do you know Al-Hirah (place in Iraq)?

    He said, "I do not know it, but I have heard of it.''

    The Messenger of Allah said:

    By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, Allah will make this matter (i.e., Islam) prevail until a

    woman riding a camel will come from Al-Hirah and perform Tawaf around the House

    without needing the protection of anybody, and the treasures of Kisra the son of Hurmuz will

    be opened.

    He said, "Kisra the son of Hurmuz!''

    He said,

    Yes, Kisra the son of Hurmuz, and wealth will be given until there will be no one who will

    accept it.

    Adiyy bin Hatim said: "Now it is happening that

    a woman riding a camel comes from Al-Hirah and performs Tawaf around the House

    without needing the protection of anybody, and

    I was among those who opened the treasure of Kisra the son of Hurmuz.

    By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, the third thing will also come to pass, because the

    Messenger of Allah said it.''

    ْيًئا ... نِي ال ُيْشِرُكون بِي ش ْعُبُدون ...ي if they worship Me and do not associate anything with Me.

    Imam Ahmad recorded from Anas that Mu`adh bin Jabal told him,

    .

    Allah (swt) will definintely establish the

    Deen for His servants.

    Shirk was practically abrogated from

    Mecca at the Conquest of Mecca.

    The promise of peace and security is

    only for those who believe and do good

    deeds. It is not for those who leave

    their religion when they face hardships

    because of Deen.

    Verse 55

    Verse 56. Allah commands His believing

    servants

    to establish prayer, which means

    worshipping Allah Alone with no partner or

    associate;

    to pay the Zakah, which is an act of

    kindness towards His poor and weak

    creatures;

    and by doing so to obey the Messenger of

    Allah , i.e., to do as he commands them and

    to avoid what he forbids them, so that Allah

    will have mercy on them for that.

    This verse speaks of obligatory

    prayers and Zakaah. One should

    however try to pray nafl and give

    charity.

    Verse 56-57

    Verse 57 speaks to the Prophet (pbuh).

    Muslims were weak when these

    verses were being revealed the

    Muslims were being revealed. The

    new Muslims would wonder how

    was it possible that they would be

    rulers and conquer the world

    powers of their times..

    When is a Momin strongest?

    When he obeys Allah (swt).

    Those who obey and act are always

    successful however one should keep in

    mind that one may face trials in Allah’s

    (swt) way.
