Foodborne pathogens do not discriminate based on genetic background or family history of illness. Bacteria and other dangers in poorly handled food can cause a small outbreak or illness that affects thousands upon thousands of people. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as The Mayo Clinic estimate that 31 pathogens are largely responsible for the roughly 48 million cases of foodborne illnesses that occur each year in the United States. About 127,000 people are hospitalized annually for these conditions, and approximately 3,000 do not survive. Norovirus, salmonella, campylobacter, staphylococcus, and listeria are a handful of pathogens known to cause foodborne illnesses. While norovirus can be spread from one infected person to another, many other cases of foodborne illnesses can be traced to the presence of bacterium on raw meat and poultry. That bacteria is then spread through improper food packaging, handling and cooking procedures. Symptoms of foodborne illness may include gastrointestinal distress, fever, cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea. Listeria can cause confusion and convulsions, and the CDC notes that a listeria outbreak in September 2011 claimed several lives. In that instance, the bacteria were passed to consumers via contaminated cantaloupe. Contaminated food can turn up in restaurants or in home kitchens, so it’s a must that both professional and amateur cooks exercise caution when handling food. Cooking foods at proper temperatures and storing items properly can prevent illnesses caused by food pathogens. Because you cannot see or smell bacteria, you must always assume it is present in your food and take the necessary precautions to safeguard yourself and the people you cook for from illness. Weigh your optionsregarding credit and debit cards

Credit and debit cards are how many people make their purchases, both big and small. Many people would rather swipe a card at the checkout counter than count cash. These cards offer unmatched convenience and can help keep receipts organized and purchases accountable with minimal effort. But credit cards and debit cards are not perfect. One of the biggest disadvantages to using cards to make all purchases is the tendency to lose track of your spending. When paying with cash, consumers can visibly see the money leaving their pockets and know when that money has run out. Paying by card is an abstract concept that doesnt become real until bills are received or bank statements are reviewed. Although debit and credit cards are frequently used interchangeably, there are times when one is preferable over the other. Heres how to decide which card to use.Need to build credit? Use a credit card if you are trying to establish a positive credit history. However, you must pay your bill in a timely fashion, and it helps to pay the entire balance each and every billing cycle to develop a good credit score.Dont want a large monthly bill? Debit cards withdraw money directly from your account at the moment the transaction occurs. Much like spending with cash, debit cards let users know when they have run out of cash, as cards will be denied if the transaction is not approved. If you do not want to pay a large bill at the end of the month, debit cards are the better choice.Prefer greater security? Great strides have been made to thwart would-be identity thieves and keep fi nancial data safe. However, as was evidenced by the major data breach in Targets payment system in late 2013, when millions of credit and debit card

numbers and PIN codes were hacked, no system is entirely foolproof. Credit cards offer added security because if fraudulent purchases are made, your credit card account will be quickly frozen and you will not be held accountable. When using debit cards, you are spending your own money up front. Fraudulent purchases may be fi xed over time, but it could leave a defi cit in your account until matters are resolved.Want to minimize fees? Debit cards do not charge interest or minimum charge penalties. Theres no need to worry about being late for a payment and getting charged a fee, and causing your balance to skyrocket. Gas stations and other retailers that may charge more per purchase for using credit cards willtreat debit cards like cash and offer the same discounts.Enjoy perks? Credit card companies will sell you their card over another based on various perks. In addition to competitive interest rates, perks may include being able to accumulate travel points, cash-back dollar amounts, advanced ticketing offers for shows and sporting events, discounts and coupons for certain retailers, and many other benefi ts. More and more consumers are relying largely on credit cards and debit cards to make their purchases. Each type of card has its benefi ts and disadvantages, so consumers must weigh their options to determine which type of card works best for them.

Understand and avoid elder fi nancial fraud

Seniors in declining healthare vulnerable to elder fraud.

Elder fraud is a fi nancial crime that targets older men and women who are often unable to recognize they are being victimized. Elder fi nancial fraud is a broad term that can be applied to a host of crimes, from stealing money or property directly from an individual to using an older persons property or possessions without permission. Many seniors are targeted through telemarketing scams in which elders are scared into giving money out of fear of losing their homes. Some are exploited by people closer to home who forge signatures or get an older person to sign over deeds or power of attorney.Criminals often see elderly men and women as easy targets. Seniors may be suffering from declining

physical and/or mental health, which compromises their ability to defend themselves or even recognize they are being taken advantage of. Seniors also may be embarrassed that they were duped and not share their experiences with others as a result. But elder fraud also can be perpetrated by family members who aim to acquire an elderly relatives assets.Recognizing scenarios where fraud may be committed can help men and women protect their elderly relatives from being victimized by elder fraud.Confi rm professionals are who they say they are. More than 170 designations and certifi cations are used within the fi nancial industry to identify professionals. Some of them do not necessarily mean a person is qualifi ed or can be trusted to handle an individuals assets. Always ask a fi nancial advisor if he is overseen by a government agency or is authorized to provide advice under the fi duciary standard of care. Be especially careful when dealing with advisors who try to push certain products or those who suggest shortcuts and blending services. Such professionals are not necessarily criminals, but they may have ulterior motives in mind and not be overly concerned about you or your loved ones fi nancial well-being.Pay attention to your accounts. Unusually large withdrawals from automated teller machines or cashed checks with signatures that do not match the signature on the account are both indicative of fraud. If you are monitoring a loved ones accounts, question any surges of activity in accounts that are normally somewhat inactive.Ask a loved one to keep you abreast of changes in their will. Abrupt changes in a will or other fi nancial documents should also cause concern. Family members caring for a senior should be aware of any major changes to important documents.

Monitor a loved ones purchases. Sudden purchases, whether its an updated insurance policy or unnecessary home repairs, may be indicative of elder fraud.Elder fi nancial fraud targets an often vulnerable segment of the population, and its often up to loved ones to protect their elderly relatives from being victimized by such crimes.

Monthly, Quarterly, Tax and Payroll Services Did you know?Skimming, sometimes referred to as card skimming, is a type of financial fraud in which information is illegally copied from the magnetic strip of a debit or credit card. Once a card has been skimmed, the criminals perpetrating the fraud can then clone the card and use it to make false purchases and/or steal the card holders identity. Account holders may be surprised to learn that their cards can be skimmed at their own banks, where criminals may place skimming devices over card slots at ATM machines. Unsuspecting customers will then swipe their cards and wont notice anything out of the ordinary while completing their transactions. Men and women concerned about skimming should avoid outdoor ATMs that are not under bank supervision and surveillance, as well as those machines that well off the beaten path where a criminal wont attract attention while attaching a skimming device. Concerned account holders also can closely examine their bank accounts online and examine ATMs before swiping their cards.

Owning a home is a dream for many people. But even the most affordable homes can be a considerable expense, which is why many homeowners are on constant lookout for ways to cut the costs of home ownership.Men and women who have owned their homes for years may already know of various ways they can save money each month. But fi rst-time homeowners may not be so savvy, which can leave them scrambling forways to save each month. Fortunately, homeowners can reduce the cost of owning their homes in avariety of ways.Refi nance your mortgage. The average homeowner would point to his or her mortgage payment as his or her biggest monthly expense. First-time homeowners may assume they have no leeway with regard to lowering that payment, but thats not necessarily true. Interest rates fl uctuate every day, and homeowners might be able to take advantage of that fl uctuation by refi nancing their mortgages to earn lower interest rates. Depending on the amount of the loan, a homeowner might be able to save hundreds of dollars per month and tens of thousands of dollars over the life of the loan after refi nancing his or her mortgage. Research current interest rates to determine if refi nancing is in your best interest.Reexamine your insurance policy. When borrowing money to buy a home, borrowers need to have homeowners insurance. Its easy to forget these policies and simply pay the premium each month. But homeowners looking to save money

should periodically reexamine their policies and compare these existing policies to those they might be able to get from other providers. Comparison shopping can save homeowners substantial amounts of money. Homeowners willing to purchase their homeowners and auto insurance policies from the same provider also can save a considerable amount of money, sometimes as much as 15 percent depending on the provider.Make safety upgrades. Another way to cut the cost of home ownership is to upgrade your homes safety features. Many insurance companies offer discounts to homeowners who install alarm systems, sprinklers or storm shutters in their homes. But homeowners should confi rm their eligibility for such discounts before making any upgrades, as policies may differ depending on the provider.Purchase eco-friendly appliances for your home. The appliances in your home at the time of purchase will inevitably wear down, and replacing such items can be expensive. But replacing older appliances with more eco-friendly alternatives can save you money on your monthly utility bills, as more and more appliances are now made with energy savings in mind. Cutting your energy consumption leads to lower utility bills, and you may even be eligible for government rebates when buying products that meet certain energy-saving standards. The cost of home ownership is on the rise, but homeowners can take several steps to alleviate those costs.

    Cuttingthe costs

    of home ownership

Upgrading home appliances with more eco-friendly alternatives can save

homeowners a substantial amount of money over the life of the products.

Mortgage terms to knowBuying a home is simultaneously exciting and stressful. Owning a home is still a dream for many people, but fi rst-time buyers often fi nd that their unfamiliarity with the home buying process is a source of stress. Many terms may raise an eyebrow among fi rst-time buyers, so the following are a few mortgage terms buyers can familiarize themselves with to facilitate the process of buying their own homes.Closing costs: Buying a home is expensive, and part of that expense is the closing costs. Any time a real estate transaction occurs, that transaction is accompanied by certain expenses, which are known as the closing costs. Closing costs may include attorney fees, loan origination fees, title insurance and escrow payments. Buyers can sometimes negotiate with the seller so the seller will agree to pay the closing costs, or the costs can be shared by the buyer and the seller. But buyers may also pay the closing costs in their entirety on their own.Escrow: Escrow is a bond, deed, document or money kept in the custody of a third party until a real estate transaction has been completed. In addition, escrow accounts are used to hold the property tax and insurance fees that are collected via your monthly mortgage payment.

Fixed-rate mortgage: A fi xed-rate mortgage, unlike an adjustable rate mortgage, is one in which the interest rate on the mortgage remains the same for the life of the loan. Buyers typically prefer a fi xed-rate mortgage because they know exactly what they will be paying for their home each month. An adjustable rate mortgage, often referred to as an ARM loan, is one that typically comes with a lower interest rate than a fi xed-rate mortgage, but that lower rate is usually only locked in for a relatively brief period of time, such as one year. Once that initial time period is over, the interest rate will then increase and may increase several times thereafter over the life of the loan.PMI: PMI, which stands for private mortgage insurance, must be purchased by home buyers who are fi nancing more than 80 percent of their homes. The standard down payment when purchasing a home is 20 percent, but some buyers cannot afford such a down payment. As a result, the lender then mandates that such buyers purchase PMI, which protects the lenders if the borrower defaults on the loan. The cost of PMI will be added to your mortgage payment, and once you have 20 percent equity in your home you can cancel PMI, at which time your monthly mortgage payment will decrease.
