    Icelandic

    is an

    inflect ing language.

    This means that

    the

    sam e word often changes form without changing meaning . Such

    grammat ical

    features as

    tense,

    aspect ,

    person,

    nu.rnber, mood

    etc , are fo rmed

    attaching affixe s to roots of s t ems , so, if the

    foreign student is

    not

    careful he may eas i ly get

    lost

    in the

    learning the language.

    their correspondence

    any

    languages

    is never absolute.

    Hence

    of sentences . Words

    appearing

    in the text are in genera l the

    highes t - f requency

    words

    in

    the language employed in sentence s of

    high

    frequency.

    This you must

    know:

    Icelandic is a DIFFICULT language.

    I t s rudiments

    CAN

    NOT

    be learned as eas i ly as the

    rudiments

    of

    mos t other languages. It takes t ime to unders tand

    the

    grammat ical

    fea tures

    of

    a s imple sentence . A sentence of the order Subject /

    in Icelandic.

    The minute you

    s tar t

    using

    the

    Object

    of a sentence

    you

    are involved in declension,

    main stumbling

    block of

    Icelandic.

    Simila r ly , the pas t tense can not be in t roduced

    until compara t ive ly la te in your study.

    But

    then again,

    after

    you

    mas te r the essen t ia l s ,

    you

    will find yourse l f

    in

    ca lm water s .

    How to use

    the book:

    The wises t plan is to read the lessons through quickly. After gett ing

    a

    bi rd s eye view you can set t le down to detai led study. Do not waste too

    memor ize

    the case endings of

    the nouns

    or any of the

    f lexions of the adject ive other

    language.

    Concentrate on

    l ea rn ing

    a relat ively smal l c lass

    of

    words .

    This c lass

    includes the

    par t ic les ,

    pronouns pointer words and helper verbs .

    A bat te ry

    of about two hundred

    such words

    for

    ready use , supplemented by a nodding acquaintance with

    about

    a hundred

    others

    includes a

    very

    high

    propor t ion

    of

    the

    words

    we

    constant ly

    use. The most

    impor tan t

    thing at

    the

    outset is to

    have a smal l

    vocabulary of the

    essent ia l nouns

    adject ives and

    verbs

    always at

    your

    disposa l .

    Icelandic has a lot

    of archaic

    g r ammat ica l

    devices . In

    this

    book

    to l ighten the burden

    of

    learning

    the

    se by giving t hem in

    an

    evolut ionary context .
