Brief History of HIV in the United States

HIV was first identified in the United States in 3453 after a n&m(er of gay men started

getting sic" with a rare type of cancer' It too" se%eral years for scientists to de%elop a test for

the %ir&s- to &nderstand how HIV was transmitted (etween h&mans- and to determine what

people co&ld do to protect themsel%es'

In 6775- *D* ad2&sted its estimate of new HIV infections (eca&se of new technology and

de%eloped (y the agency' Before this time- *D* estimated there were ro&ghly +7-777 new

HIV infections each year in the United States' New res&lts shows there were dramatic

declines in the n&m(er of new HIV infections from a pea" of a(o&t 387-777 in the mid 3457sto a low of ro&ghly 97-777 in the early 3447s' !es&lts also shows that new infections

increased in the late 3447s- followed (y a le%eling off since 6777 at a(o&t 99-777 per year' In

677:- an estimated 9:-877 indi%id&als were infected with HIV'

AIDS cases (egan to fall dramatically in 344:- when new dr&gs (ecame a%aila(le' oday-

more people than e%er (efore are li%ing with HIV;AIDS' *D* estimates that a(o&t 3 million

people in the United States are li%ing with HIV or AIDS' A(o&t one .&arter of these people

do not "now that theyare infected< not "nowing p&ts them and others at ris"'
