Arthur Rellis, (19), of Carrig Bán, Bunclody and Patrick Somers, (21), of 36 Pairc Mhuire, Ferns plead- ed guilty to causing €80,000 worth of damage to Our Lady of Lourdes National School, Hospital Hill, Bunclody on Decem- ber 20, 2007, at the Circuit Court this week. Garda Dan Whelan said the men gained access to the school by breaking a window and were seen running from the premises when it was alight. He said “extensive damage” had been caused by the blaze when the fire spread to the school’s ceiling. Garda Whelan said Somers has 17 previous convictions, including rob- bery, burglary, assault and criminal damage. Rellis, who was on bail at the time of the offence, also has a long list of previous convictions and was most recently sentenced to two and a half years in prison for robbery in April last. Rosario Boyle, S.C, defending Rellis, said her client “was not the ring- leader” and said investi- gating Gardaí had been of the opinion that he did not instigate the offence. Ms. Boyle said Rellis denied starting the fire and said he had merely broken into the school to steal a hi-fi. Ms. Boyle said Rel- lis has been in St. Patrick’s Institute since April 14 2008 and is serving his sentence in solitary con- finement on “23-hour lockdown”. “I am concerned about the effect of 23-hour lock- down on his mental state. It raises issues of human rights,” said Ms. Boyle, who called her client to give evidence. Ctd. page 3 School arsonists receive jail term Judge Alice Doyle The school after the fire.
