MONTH OF THE HOLY SOULS

ST WILFRID’S PARISH NEWSLETTER

11th November 2018 2018/43

32nd Sunday of the Year

Jesus as a “dangerous memory”.

I’m not sure where I’ve come across this way of speaking about Jesus, but it appeals to me because it feels real. The Gospels that we proclaim are based on memories that people had of Jesus, which were endlessly retold and then put in writing. That’s a “dangerous” undertaking in itself, if we think of “danger” as getting it wrong. But there was nothing else for it, the writing would have to happen eventually. The Spirit would have to guide.

Remembering would make him present, and he had told them to celebrate the Eucharist as an action to do just that, all in the power of the Spirit.

Jesus may ask us to do something which is dangerous, in whichever way you frame that word. So, remembering him and reading the God’s Word is risky.

Elijah asks a widow who’s about to die from malnutrition to make him a scone, and after that to see to her own needs and those of her son. No “women and children first” in this story! She recognises him as a holy man, and takes the risk of putting his guidance first. Perhaps there’s a flavour of Cana here, but also, more obviously of the Eucharist.

Then there is the widow in Mark’s Gospel for today, where a woman hands over all she has to God. Maybe when your back’s against the wall, handing yourself over to the Lord is that much easier.

We remember at this time so many people who “handed themselves over” to the most dangerous situations. We know that this had consequences for which we should be grateful. We hope that we may be courageous in imitation of so many of them, in a spirit of service and trust in the guidance of God and his ultimate embrace. PR
